Give it some love! (http://games.kikizo.com/news/200611/101_p1.asp) :wank:
It's 4 pages so I'm not pasting it all, here's a few tidbits:
Although different demos of the game have been doing the rounds via download onto owners' systems, and at demo kiosks at stores in Japan and America, some of the feedback has been mixed and it's abundantly clear to us that the near-final product we've played benefits from a lot of perfecting. After all, the game is set to ship in just a couple of weeks in Japan, albeit without the online play and additional features it will boast with the full western release. This build is slick and polished, and even more final builds now fix the remaining issues such as slowdown and loading time.
So the game plays like a dream, to be quite honest. But another big part of the enjoyment is the immersive, tangible world you race in, and that's thanks not just to the physical laws of the track, but the outstanding visual quality too.
Simply put, there's no next-gen racing game as cool as this.

While races are often incredibly tough to win, practice makes perfect. Using the right paths and driving lines to catch up and overtake is a matter of skill and discipline, and your positioning is based on your driver, not the car, so you can blow up and explode over the finish line, hoping that the explosion throws your driver over the other cars and steals you the win at the last possible second. Clearly, this is the most awesome thing ever.

Motorstorm is definitely shaping up to be a fantastic game. After playing the demo, I can't wait for the real deal. Definitely one of the more fun racing games I can remember playing.

i've heard conflicting reports about visual quality so we'll just have to wait and see what happens, i will be getting it come hell or high waterFrom what i've heard from people that have actually downloaded the demo it looks great. And the only time i heard people talk down about the graphics was when they played the demo at best buy...which was apparently from a older build. I don't think i've heard anybody say that about the downloadable demo.
In conclusion, to be quite honest we're in love with MotorStorm. When you look at this code with a forward-looking perspective, if there's one game that really shows off the POTENTIAL of the PS3 beyond Xbox 360 right now, absolutely it's MotorStorm, and Evolution is to be saluted for putting together such an awesome package.
Forget MGS or Final Fantasy. MotorStorm is the PS3's first killer app.
Interesting closing comment.

Interesting? More like, retarded lol. Motorstorm might be great, but it's far from a Final Fantasy or MGS. FF VII, VIII, IX, X, XII and MGS1, MGS2, MGS3 would certainly beg to differ that rash comment.
Good find, but some credit should be due to backbreaker, I think he got it first, but I'll give you both rep lol.

I played it at Target and I was like "This don't look the vids I saw." So yeah, I think some of the Kiosk are older builds, cuz the ground textures were just glitchy as all hell. Interesting thing they said about this being the first Killer App...I'll wait for the reviews for that, I'm just most excited about Heavenly Sword though really...

11-28-2006, 12:00 AM
Yea pretty much what i was thinking. But some would call Resistance the 1st PS3 killer app (IGN did lol). I don't think they were implying that its better than those games. Just that you don't have to wait for those games to finally get a killer app since you get one in MotorStorm.

The retail build is older and the downloadable build has a rock solid framerate, it's hard to describe but the sense of speed and chaos is just so cool. I think the point is that Motorstorm is just so damn fun that it's a killer app worthy of a PS3 by itself.

I think the point is that Motorstorm is just so damn fun that it's a killer app worthy of a PS3 by itself.Yeah I basically factored this out by reading certain previews and then reading people's experiences at retail demo kiosk. Something just didn't add up. IGN was like FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! Then Nameless was like Great-but nothing that amazing. I figured that the gap between user experiences and preview of the Japanese build had to be a different version of the game. It's funny how PS3 was probably one of the most bashed consoles ever, I think even topping PS2 in the negative department, yet it seems the game library will be the fastest growing of quality titles. On Launch Day we got RESISTANCE...Next up MotorStorm and Fight Night. Then the new year is here already with HS, our U.S Motorstorm with online play, Lair, and Unreal 07. Not to mention the games that got pushed back like Rainbow Six, Oblivion, Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R, Full Auto 2, ect....It's gonna be a heck of a ride. And the spring going into fall releases are gonna be just as big with Insomniac giving us Ratchet and Clank, Sega giving us Virtua Fighter 5, Sony giving us Warhawk and Naughtly dog's untitled game that looks extremely promising. All this leading up to what??! Oh nothing much but Killzone 2, MGS4 and DMC4!!! And Motor Storm will go day and date whenever I pick up my PS3, the rest, is just history.

I played both the retail demo and the download demo. Both are decent, but the retail one is very noticeably less polished. I started watching someone else and thought, "that is so far off from what I played at home.". I want both though. There were a few other options and things in the retail demo that I found different, but it looked bad by comparison. Sony needs to demand that those old demos are updated, because it's making them look bad by having that slow broken demo out as the showoff piece of the PS3.

yeah... but they're not going to put the retail Japan game in US demo units. It will get praise online and in magazines, but most shoppers at best buy passing through don't really read online stuff, they only see the final demo on the floor and judge the system based off that.

Just incase any of you missed this video from Eurogamer. It starts of talking about the Wii but once that part is done they go into the Motor Storm studios and you get some behind the scenes look at stuff. They show the nice progression the game has gone through as well as drawings for the game. I find the sketch with the motorcycle going completly downhill pretty interesting.

IGN has been praising the game for weeks now and you know IGN is like "the DEFINITVE" review site. Gamespot might give it a 9.0 or something and probably 1up, but IGN, GAMEINFORMER, GAMEPRO, they've been pretty fair I think. GS and 1up tend to lean towards the XBox side of things...I still can't believe GS gave Zelda an 8.8....sheesh

Try this out, the fun factor goes up exponentially.
Before going balls out, learn how to drive so start off slow and learn the course, knowing when to accelerate and slow down is crucial.
Pause the game, switch to motion controls(give it a chance)
start the race: hit the triangle button to go into bonnet view or 1stperson.
When I first started using the sixaxis for driving I was tilting the control up and down too turn and I was out of control.
So I decided to hold the sixaxis like a steering wheel(buttons facing you) and low and behold it just like driving and its much better in bonnet view.
Also while you in bonnet view, use the Right analog stick to look around you, it is awesome.

Honestly, this is so damn close to the target render, that I really don't care to nitpick the tiny little differences here and there anymore. They have come so close that it really doesn't matter. If killzone can even come that close, it's on. And to hear MS devs saying killzone will set the standard....

Well, japanese one.
I like Motorstorm so much, I'm buying it twice. :)It's released next Thursday!
I guess it'll surely include English language in the disc. Let us know how many languages it features! :)
If you're lucky, they might release a patch for the Japanese version which would include online multiplayer.

It's better on 4 wheel vehicles, especially the rally car, than bikes. Bikes are a little too twitchy. You wind up doing donuts at the slightest flick of the wrist. The control is more precise than the sticks IMO, and more comfortable once you realise you don't have to move much at all to get the desired results. That's the hardest part, tricking your brain into not trying to steer it like it's a steering wheel.

Hey smokey,
Just a quick reply to your Quiz about the Logitech wheel...
My bro has tried the Logitech GT Force pro wheel on it (Motorstorm demo) and the F1 game and it worked but it wasnt "fully" supported, as in it did not register ALL the way to the end of the turning curcle. So it seems that they are including support for it into the game.
Just a maby but it does seem likely that it will be fully supported.
Also it did not use "Force Feedback"

Damn that looks nice...
Honestly, this is so damn close to the target render, that I really don't care to nitpick the tiny little differences here and there anymore. They have come so close that it really doesn't matter. If killzone can even come that close, it's on. And to hear MS devs saying killzone will set the standard....
Notice how much the background texture resolution has improved.
This is now where close to the Target render.

True, because by the time the game gets better graphics, there will always have a CG better than the graphics--always. So it is really impossible for any console to have CG quality graphics.
Think of it like this:
Final Fantasy 8 had CG's but thoes CG's are now similar to FF 12 graphics and pretty soon the CG in FF 12 will look like some games in FF ??. CG's will never look the same they will only get better.

After going back and playing through FF7, and then watching the FF7 realtime demo for PS3 at E3 05', it completley proves the point you make. The real time version is leaps and bounds better than the pre-rendered version from FF7.

I don't think MotorStorm is a game well suited to Japanese taste. The lack of online doesn't help either, but still, it looks like only one of the reviewers didn't particularly like it while the others did enjoy it.
MotorStorm will get much better marks in the US and Europe as it is getting very positive previews from American and European media. And online gaming will be there when they review it.

Here's (http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=21686)the second part of the interview at gi.biz
Motoring Ahead
In part 1 of our interview with Martin Kenwright, the Evolution Studios boss talked about the development of PS3 launch title Motorstorm.
Here he discusses planning as far forward as the launch of PlayStation 4, the damage sequelitis is doing to the industry, and playing darts for commercial deals...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GamesIndustry.biz: How do you find working on a console which, for the majority of your development time, isn't actually finished?
Martin Kenwright: You're actually trying to address a business model that doesn't exist, a market that doesn't yet exist and a level of technology that doesn't exist. So you've got to 'imagineer' the process.
The first year we had to get the the ethos right. Can we take special effects from movies and run them in real-time? How much power have we actually got? How are we going to build this world? And as a result you go into cul-de-sacs. You make incorrect decisions, but it's critical that you make mistakes because you have to learn what not to do.
We went through a phase of understanding technology, creating technology, wishing for technology. But once that as settled the game came together very quickly. Actual production was fluid and fast. The only thing we knew would be consistent was that nothing would stay the same; things changed everyday.
And every developer is in the same boat at this point. Perhaps you're better off because you're part of Sony...
The best thing about it is that a lot of technology we've made is going to now be available for other developers. At least everyone now knows what the hardware is, it's finished and locked down. When we started on a PlayStation 3 game the hardware wasn't even settled.
But that's the fun and the pain. It's exciting; our technologists love being first to see this sort of thing, we can't stop them at times.
Has the whole process of working on Motorstorm reinvigorated the company? I imagine working on an official rally game has its restrictions by its very nature - does the team feel refreshed?
With the whole process of making a game you'll go through the doldrums, the depression and then the uplift. It's an emotional rollercoaster. People give it their all for a good few years.
But the wonderful thing I can say about the team is that even when we knew World Rally wasn't a big player any more, and it was lost in the niche, even World Rally 5 - which came out just over a year ago - was done as a labour of love. It was done brilliantly. We thought we could still create something special and that really encapsulates the entire ethos for everyone.
There are people who will make something happen and people who will wait for something to happen - which are you going to be? With Motorstorm we really tried to make an early momentum and E3 kick-started that for us. It was like burning all our bridges so there was no going back.
We went off to Monument Valley, bribed the Native Americans to get access. We had to get permission to land on top of the rocks. We got some of the best cinematographers together and created this amazing vision.
Once people understood what we were trying to do, we were going to go so big and so high-profile with this that we had to create something bigger than Evolution Studios to make this happen. There's stress. But slowly and surely the fog begins to clear and hints of the gameplay came through. At E3 this past year I was telling everyone at Sony that this could be one of the proper launch titles for PS3.
I think we really proved ourselves and pulled it together at E3 this year. As a developer you thrive off feedback. You see the PS3 launch in America all across Times Square, with massive queues and giant screens, and for a developer who's given two or more years of his life - I'm absolutely thrilled for the team. It's all been worthwhile.
Evolution Studios is now considered a developer that specialises in driving games. Is that something you want to continue to do, or do you see the team expanding into other genres? Would the studio grow and learn by working on something other than four-wheeled games?
The marketplace will be changing beyond all recognition in the next five years. We've anticipated that. I know people are looking at PS3 now, and I'm not being glib, but we're actually looking at PS4. I'm thinking where will it be in five years, how will we get there? What will the marketplace be like, the games, who'll be buying them?
You can't keep doing what you always do. You do have to evolve and look up every several years. Five or six years ago we set off to try and own rally on PS2. And then to create this huge early momentum and big hit on PS3, which we've done. We've established [satellite studio] Bigbig in the entertainment arcade sector with Pursuit Force.
So we've been looking at your questions ourselves now for the next five years. Our aim is to work to our strengths. It doesn't necessarily mean we'll always be working in the driving genre forever; we're all in the entertainment industry now, that's where we're going.
As videogames are part of the entertainment industry, is there a danger that development studios will stick to what they are good at, but not be able to evolve past their comfortable niche? Evolution makes great off-road racing games - do you continue to do that and build success, or do you take the risk of going forward into new areas?
What I've learnt in the past is you can incremently improve something by one per cent, and it takes two years and millions of pounds and all you get is more of the same. You polarise your market. You're offering more of the same instead of something new, memorable and exciting.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but sticking to what you're best at can be more of a risk than reinventing yourself. The DNA of all these games is around 80 per cent the same. It's the application, the value of the IP, the new killer brand that is actually priceless. Whatever you do is really hard work.
People like to tick boxes and play it safe, but sequels are the bane of our industry. 'The last one was good so the board wants ten more the same...' That's actually harming the marketplace irreparably.
We're in the business of making money; we're very aware of that. We've arm wrestled publishers to get more money. Honestly, we really have played darts for commercial deals and won. We understand that you live and die by you cashflow, and the secret is that early on you're able to champion the vision and people can see from your track record what you can achieve and how you've managed transitions before.
The reality for many small developers is that publishers are risk averse. But things are going to change. The way games are going to be made is going to change, the way they're funded is going to change.
It's not going to be like a parent/child relationship with publishers in the future. It's going to become much more of a creative partnership. I think it's going to be an amazing time for games. People are waking up now to the fact that sequels are actually high risk rather than low risk.
