November 27, 2006 - Every once in awhile IGN editors are sent "mystery media." That is, a video or screenshot that points to an upcoming product without revealing exactly what that product is. Take, for example, the latest movie to cross our desks (which we've included on the media page below). It's been a popular point of conjecture over the last hour or so, and everyone around the office has theories as to what it is. Could it be a sequel to Insomniac Game's Resistance: Fall of Man? Is it the next chapter of DOOM? Perhaps it's an all-new IP with no connection to anything whatsoever?

According to the notes included with the video, the answer may come later this week -- which is good to know, since the only information included with the 8 second clip itself is that "They're Coming Summer 2007." They can only mean "the aliens", whom we get an extremely quick glimpse of in the highly realistic video snippet.

We did get one other hint as to the game's identity. It's a PS3 title for sure (no other platforms were mentioned) and it will receive an official announcement sometime soon.

What do we think? Our money is on the oft-talked about but never confirmed Area 51 sequel from Midway -- as the artistic style of the creature shown in the video matches several of those from the 2005 shooter. Guess we'll just have to wait and see if we're right or wrong.

Update: Just hours after we posted this story, several IGN readers who subscribe to PSM have informed us that the video above is indeed from the sequel to Area 51 entitled BlackSite (yes, our guesses rock!). The latest issue of the unofficial PlayStation Magazine arrived in mailboxes earlier today with a cover story on said game. Short waits are good waits.

I do have that issue. Haven read that yet. But judging from graphics alone, It's kinda jaggy with low res textures.

good news. I was wondering where the hell is Area 52 hiding. the first one was good and I I was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought I wasn't going to like it and it would feel cheap. but I enjoyed it.
what I really like about this news is that the game is announced for PS3. the video doesn't say anything but IGN says PS3 is currently the only announced platform for it. though it will most likely end up on everything else.

looks like another good game coming out in 07. :)

The newest issue of PSM has Blacksite in it. I will get scans of the pics and post them. the pics I saw KICK ASS!! The graphics looks great and they have great things to say about the AI in the game in that it has significant Ai branching and behavior patterns. I am excited by what PSM has to say about it.

That's a really cool video -- I can already imagine the scary situations they could create with monsters like that and an atmosphere like that. Thumbs up for going in the right direction, but still a "meh" at another FPS...

Got the new psm,there was an article about the sequal to area 51,First off the aliens look like aquatic creatures now,the graphics are much better looking and the first level is set in iraq

Depending on how well the player is doing, The game Intelligently understands the mood of the squad, So they Fire more aggressively, Talk more aggressively and Advance more Aggressively if you're doing well, They fall back more, Take cover more and sound more afraid if the morale system tips the other way

I am going to school to make video games, I am afraid it is a little late for me..... LOL!!!

The Aliens are different than on the original, They look alot more weird. I wonder if the humans get infected and get turned into those aliens if they get bitten like they did in the first game, And the thing I liked about the original was when your character got bitten off that Alien and he got turned into one, Even though I liked the shooting parts better it was still a pretty good experience, I loved the plot, I just hope I have alot of fun with Blacksite as I did with the first.

Cliffbo it is Area 51, Its just on that magazine scan its showing the first level, It Starts in Iran or Iraq...Whatever it was....But im guessing the rest are in/around Area 51...Aaaand maybe some other places.
