Sales of current-gen console more than double, handheld sales nearly triple; Sony confirms first US batch of next machine is gone.

This week, the obvious became official: The first batch of the PlayStation 3 is gone. "All PS3s brought into the US last week sold out," Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior vice president of corporate communications, told GameSpot. "Feedback from our retail partners is that demand is still incredibly high and that PS3s put on store shelves were quickly snapped up by holiday shoppers."

Though he declined to give a specific quantity of day-one PS3 stock, the executive did say that Sony was on target to bring 1 million units to North America by year's end. "We will continue to utilize airfreight delivery for the PlayStation 3 to ensure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year," promised Karraker. Some retailers, such as GameStop, have already reported receiving a second batch of the console, which is still fetching upward of $1,000 on eBay.

Demand also appears to be high for Sony's current-generation platforms. Though he didn't give specific numbers, Karraker said sales of the PlayStation 2 rose 116.5 percent during the week of November 26 when compared to the week prior. The PSP fared even better, enjoying a week-over-week increase of 280.5 percent. First-party software sales for the PS2 and PSP increased 120.6 percent and 167.9 percent, respectively; third-party software sales percentages were not provided.http://www.gamespot.com/news/6162395.html

Sweet!!! GO SONY!! I love that the PS2 is still selling and the PSP is selling like hot cakes!! This extra money will help Sony defray the costs of PS3 and R&D. I have a good idea that as soon as they keep stocking up the PS3, it keep selling out again and again.

BTW, happy BDay F089/H!!

We both know that no amount of extra support will pull Xbox out of the hole it's in. It really is in Microsoft's best interest to cut and run with Xbox, and that's what it looks like they're doing.

PS3 selling out is no surprise, but the surge in PS2/P sales is like, wow. There are actually still people in the world who don't own a PS2, and lots of them stopped being that this week.

With the lousy deal they got from nVidia/Intel, the best thing for Microsoft to do was dump the Xbox, fast as possible. They had to cut the price of the Xbox, but couldn't cost reduce the XBox like Sony did with the PS2.

Hope Sony got a better deal. :)

PS2 Chirstmas line, IMHO, is better than the 360 one (Viva Pinata, Gears of War), better than the PS3 one (Genji, Resistance, RR7) and even better than the Wii one(Zelda, Trauma Center, Monkey Balls etc), although with Zelda the Wii one is close..

You got.. Okami, Final Fantasy 12, Guitar Hero 2, Bully, and just after xmas, Rogue Galaxy. That's one killer lineup. I think people are mostly buying Scarface for their PS2s, but no accounting for taste. :)

Want to hear a funny story?:

A friend of mine calls himself an rpg fanatic (Jrpg, not western rpgs), and also claims himself as an action and stealth game expert. the funny part?, he hates everything related to sony and wouldn't come close to a playstation.

i really don't know how the ps2/p sales increase. The console has been out for 6 years and is ANCIENT. Yet still it amazes me that such a controversial system is almost at the 110 million barrier. Why on earth would the release of its far superior successor make sales higher? I don't get it but it is great none the less

It never ceases to amaze me. as much as i love the ps2 it has reached colt like popularity, the fact that people still buy it is astonishing.

^ It freaks me out to man. Why? I guess games it the only answer I can come up with. So many fun games it is just plain crazy. No other system in the history of gaming has ever had so many great games at AAA level of development.

Masterstroke. Can't get a ps3, shit, might as well get this ps(whatever!). It's still awesome, right?

Yeah. PS2 is mainstream and some people think they're too cool for mainstream. The fact is you have a machine that sells 110 million units, there's a large enough user base for all kinds of quirky games to be made.

Maybe some people still haven't gotten one, who knows why, but more importantly the console is still getting a ton of great games.

Oh yea and its spelled cult. ;)

Interesting, none of the supposedly mainstream blogs have reported this news. The New York Times refers to Joystiq for writing about PS3, but those f***king bastards at Joystiq know only to blog about the padding in RFOM, but cannot report this news. But at the same time Joystiq knows to blog about Wii sell out and all the little things about 360.
Keep it going Sony, bury those f***king bastards at Joystiq/Kotaku so that they forced to eat their own sh*t.

Yeah...this is really good news. The ps2 is obviously still doing great thanks to the ammazing games it's offering and will offer (I'm still waiting FF12 believe it or not). Good to know the psp sales are going up at such scale as well. But what about PSone? Is it's production really ceased or will cease later this year? I wonder how many PSones Sony made in the end...

There are around 18 or so upcoming RPGs on the PS2 including titles like Dawn of Mana, Ar Tonelico, Rogue Galaxy, the Tales of Destiny remake and so on. Many have released in Japan now and are helping the system sell like hotcakes but many haven't released here so expect at least 300k titles to be sold with Dawn of Mana and Rogue Galaxy probably hitting GH-levels (500k) so expect a good number of PS2s to sell.

For this reason, the PS2 is the undisputed leader in RPGs, Wii doesn't come close, forget 360, PS3 or the PSP.

The only system that can match the PS2 in this area is the DS/GBA-combo is seeing a large number of RPGs including Final Fantasy XII, Summon Nights DS, Archaic Sealed Heat (Sakaguchi), Lunar Knights (Team Kojima), etc, and this is just second-gen DS RPGs. O_O

I expect the PSP to follow and ditto for the PS3, both feel like the PSX and obviously the Wii. Xbox 360 isn't out either with titles like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey but they can do better (eg. LOTs of underfunded developers out there - just look at Bungie). This following-up generation is going to be impressive due to the high standards set by the PS2.

I cannot really say much about the other genres, haven't been playing much outside the genre since the DC. And now the DS, Wii and eventually the PS3 (Lair, Motorstorm, etc) will get me back onto non-RPGs. I praise DC more in this area, but Xbox needs to be praised as well, with its shooters while PS2 was always great in action-adventures like Onimusha, DMC, Silent Hill, Siren, etc. There are so many I've yet to purchase a number of them. Screw PoP and Splinter Cell, though. ;)

In sum next-gen is going to be great for all gamers. ^_^

I imagine the recent media storm about Wii and PS3 launches have just stirred consumer interest in consoles in general. Once these consumers asked around, they found out the best value is the PS2. As for the psp, it's still... shiny? Oh, and maybe they're excited about PS1 dl's on the PSP.

Uh you can't find a new xbox1 anywhere, period. It's used ones, or a 360 for you! Anyway, nice to see the psp not dragging it's feet.

I find it especially funny how people claim Wii is "stomping" PS3 bacause it has hit 650k units and PS3 is at 350k (roughly), even though both are sold out. Supply hasn't caught up to demand for either, so such comparisons are worthless. Sales for either console could slow at any moment.

EA: 500k-800k PS3s in US in '06
Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst says Sony shipped only 200,000 PS3s for US launch, expects up to 800,000 in stores this year.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6162523.html

That's why this image http://nexgenwars.com/images/ps3_forum2.jpg of sold units is so low... so it must be that they are frequently shipping few PS3's.
