View Full Version : CES 2007 Requests?
I'll be going this year and I'm planning on taking a few pictures. I'm starting this thread if anyone has any specific requests on things they would like me to try out or get some extra juicy pics of (I'm sure the PS3 will be out in full force). The event is scheduled for January 8-12.

At CES last year some Sony rep demonstrated how a PSP could be used as a remote for the PS3, could you try to get such an updated demonstration?
I am really curious about that functionality. :)
And of course try to grab any information about accessories for the PS3.
Ask them specifically about how a DVR/Tivo function can be added to the PS3.

Sorry guys:
Toshiba's SED TV a no-show at electronics show
Long-awaited surface conduction electron emitter display TV won't be shown at CES, and that will set tongues wagging.
Toshiba's long-awaited SED TV will not be appearing at the Consumer Electronics Show in January after all.
Televisions with SED, which stands for surface conduction electron emitter display, will provide a better picture than LCD (liquid crystal display) or plasma TVs, according to Toshiba and its partner, Canon. Toshiba also claims that the companies have managed to cut the manufacturing costs so that the TVs won't cost much more than similarly sized LCDs or plasmas.
The TVs, however, have been stung by a series of delays. Toshiba and Canon started working together on SED in 1999 and said the first TVs would hit retail shelves in 2005. In October, Toshiba pushed out the release again, saying the first SED TVs, a 55-incher, would come out in late 2007.
Photos of SED TV at Ceatec
The two companies have shown off various SED prototypes at CES, Ceatec (a large Japanese trade show, and other conferences. Toshiba showed off the 55-inch TV, which is similar to the one that will hit shelves, for the first time in October at Ceatec. At most of these shows, the SED exhibit attracts large crowds.
The delays, according to analysts and competitors, have hurt the chance for SED to secure a place in the market. Prices for LCD TVs and plasmas have been dropping rapidly over the past few years and often faster than expected, while sales have climbed. Competitors thus allege that SED will be too expensive, despite manufacturing advances, to compete effectively.
Toshiba did not state whether the cancellation at the show will affect the release date of the first SED TVs. Nonetheless, analysts and competitors will now likely begin to speculate on another delay as a result of the cancellation.
Now on News.com:
* Year in review: Microsoft goes 'Live,' pushes Vista
* A force for change at Yahoo
* Crave: It's the gear you've gotta see
* Extra: Japan's top robots of 2006
* Video: iPod generation headed for hearing loss?
A Toshiba representative declined to explain the reason for the cancellation, but a note sent to people with appointments to see the SED TV at CES said it wasn't due to technical issues.
"The reason is neither a technical nor business issue, but we are not allowed to disclose details due to confidentiality obligation," the note read. "Toshiba further believes that the issue will be resolved soon, and then we will be able to come back to the U.S. for a 55-inch SED demo."
The delay is related to an ongoing lawsuit bewtween Canon and Nano-Proprietary, according to a source that works with Nano-Proprietary, whose Applied Nanotech subsidiary licensed technology to Canon relating to SED TVs. The deal subsequently devolved into a lawsuit. Nano-Proprietary and Canon are now in closed-door settlement talks.

Interesting:
While we're sure to see plenty of high definition on display at next week's CES, LG is hoping to cause a stir of its own by broadcasting something other than finely tuned HD DVD / Blu-ray loops. Reportedly, the company will demonstrate "full HD" 1080p content on a series of 37-, 42-, 47-, and 55-inch LCD TVs, but the imagery seen will actually be experimental television footage from Nippon Hoso Kyokai. NHK, a public broadcaster in Japan, will be showing off content captured with 1080p "high speed motion cameras," and while most of its HD footage thus far has been beamed out in 1080i, this could potentially spark up more interest in getting 1080p to the home. Of course, none of this matters if you believe ole Mossberg's take, but we'll take all the televised HD content (especially in 1080p) we can get.

I'll be working at CES again this year, (I'm doing video for a mobile audio company, and photography for a cell phone manufacturer) so I've got a lot to look forward to, but won't have much time to explore the floor. (What else is new...)
Here's some of the stuff I'll be keeping an eye on though, and it might give you some ideas what to look for:
**What I'm looking forward to most is actually all on the DLP and LCOS front. I can't wait to see Mitsubishi's very-important new Laser DLP and JVC's thin (just 10-12" and wall-mountable) LCOS. Also, Samsung's LED DLP line should be expanding, so I'm interested to see how many sets they'll be offering with that tech.
**LCD is going to be especially interesting too. Especially interesting to me will be seeing who is releasing LCDs with Inter-field interpolation technology. Inter-field interpolation tech may be the most important tech for gamers who want LCD this year. Be on the lookout for it. The technology goes by several marketing names (JVC, for example, calls it "Clear Motion Drive") but it's all the same idea, and it really does work. This tech, and In-Plane Switching (which has been around for a while, also called TFT, ect) are both really strong technologies for improving LCD performance.
I can't wait to see S-LCD's 8th-gen panels coming from their brand-new plant in Korea. For those of you that don't know, S-LCD is a joint venture of Sony and Samsung for producing 8th-gen panels. It should be interesting to see what features are in these new panels, and what kinds of sizes we'll be seeing.
**Unfortunately, unless there is a major surprise in the works at CES, this show might mark the beginning of Plasma's swan song. I'd hoped plasma could hang in there, but there are so many problems with taking plasma to the 1080p resolution. While companies struggle to overcome plasma's obstacles, LCD and microdisplay (DLP, LCOS) technologies are making such rapid strides to improve into plasma's advantage areas, that plasma seems mired in place somewhat. Plasma looks like it may slip into the edges of the market, either as the cheap technology for people who want a bigger panel, but don't care about 1080p, or at the high-end, for people who want 100+ inches at 1080p and don't care if it costs five figures.
But hey, people have been predicting the demise of plasma for a long time, and it keeps hanging in there.
**Besides the display stuff, I think the most interesting stuff will be seeing all the new AV receivers and their support for HDMI 1.3, )the uncompressed audio formats, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD,) ect. We've had spotty support for HDMI so far, but I think help is finally on it's way.
**That brings us to Blu-ray, of course, and I expect to see a lot of stuff at CES focussing on bringing it to the masses. Last year was all about the tech and the flash, this year's show should be all about getting real products in real consumers' hands.
**Also, I think HD is set to explode in the camcorder market. We saw some really cool ones in 2006, 2007 should be even better. All those cams are going to be fun to play with.
**On the Sony-specific front, I'm really interested in seeing signs that the different divisions of Sony are really working together to create a sort of product ecosystem for consumers where Sony products work in harmony together. We've seen some signs of this. Look at the PS3 and a XBR3...they look made for each other. Look at how the XMB is incorporated across product lines in different divisions. I really liked seeing it used in the STR-DA5200ES AV receiver. I hope we see signs of this integration continuing, especially with Sony's AV products leveraging and integrating the PS3 and PSP. Sony hasn't been very good at this in the past, often it seemed like one division of the company didn't even know the other division existed.
***One of the fun things to do at CES that is becoming an annual CES tradition, is see how everyone is talking about Apple. Apple doesn't do CES, but everyone on the floor has an opinion or prediction about them. Heck, a lot of companies' biggest products are iPod accessories.
This year will be even more crazy, since Apple's Macworld, (where all those big Steve Job's keynotes and announcements are made) and the CES show will be starting ON THE SAME DAY, and a bunch of the expected product announcements, like the iTV box, and of course, the iPod, which so many companies at CES already make products to support, ect, will be huge for the crowd at CES. I'd expect that many CES attendees will be watching the live streaming video of Steve Jobs' keynote from the show floor. That should be an interesting spectacle.

Plasmas < LCD by alot.
Not in all areas IMO. LCD may be the better choice in general for various reasons and especially for gaming I would go with LCD with no doubts, but for movies I still prefer a plasma TV (it has to be quite good model now days to stand aside LCD though). I don't know why, but with a good plasma the picture (with movies) is more realistic than with any LCD I have seen so far. Plasma is getting old and almost every producer is putting more effort to LCD than plasma, wich shows in the way LCDs have improved in pretty short time. At this point for movies it's still plasma over LCD for me, but the situation will probably change. Too bad the high end plasmas are way expencive like Pioneer PDP-5000EX for example...

Well, Punk...you've opened up a big can o' worms here. This will require a loooooong answer, so I apologize in advance!
Inter-Field Interpolation used in LCDs is also called Motion-Compensated Frame Interpolation (MCFI) and is the most exciting new tech for LCDs in a while, IMO. Here's what it does:
You take a high-performance LCD panel, with a very fast response rate, and run it at up to 120HZ. You also have a video processor that analyses all the incoming frames.
This lets you accomplish two very good things.
First, in the case of HD movies encoded at 24 FPS, your video processor simply multiplies those 24 frames five times (5X) giving you the ability to do a very natural 24 FPS display on an LCD without any pulldown, frame-dropping, or interpolation schemes needed. This looks really great for feature films from sources like Blu-ray and HD DVD which will support true 24 FPS material.
But we are gamers...why is this so exciting for us?
For gamers like us, and sports fans too, MCFI takes the 30 FPS or 60 FPS data coming from the console or HDTV tuner, and calculates what the frames between the actual frames would look like if they were there, and inserts those virtual frames into the image (interpolation) effectively doubling the frames the eye sees, which virtually eliminates all motion blur you might commonly see with very fast moving objects or screen pans on an LCD panel.
As I mentioned before, JVC already has a panel on the market using this tech, and it is very effective.
Here's an article about this tech as it will be used by Samsung:
http://news.com.com/Taking+the+blur+out+of+LCD+TVs/2100-1008_3-6136889.html
The other technology I mentioned, In-Plane Switching, is already in use in a lot of higher-end LCD HDTV panels, and has been used in smaller computer monitors for years. If you've ever seen one of those fancy, high-priced Apple Studio Display LCDs, and wondered why they are so bright and clear even when you look at them from the sides, that's In-Plane Switching at work.
To understand In-plane Switching, first, you have to understand how an LCD panel works. I'll attempt to describe it, (even though I'm hardly an expert,) but here's the easy way to think about it that's accurate enough for our purposes, OK?
The light from each pixel in an LCD is basically controlled by a series of little "doors" of liquid crystal. When voltage is applied, the liquid crystal "doors" twist open. Ideally, these "doors" should be able to open a full 90 degrees when voltage is fully applied if needed.
A normal LCD panel uses a single transistor to control the voltage to a whole row of pixels. This is certainly cost effective and less complex, but the trade-off is that since all those pixels in the row share the same voltage, the voltage to each liquid crystal "door" is shared with the other "doors" in the row, and none of the liquid crystals can fully twist all the way open, because they don't all get enough current.
This causes two problems:
First, since the light from the backlight through the crystals is broken up by all these different "doors" open at different angles, the angle of light leaving each cell is restricted. This causes LCD panels to have their ideal viewing angle restricted. This is why image quality or brightness drops off so rapidly when looking at some LCDs.
Also, since some light is lost, a brighter backlight is used to compensate, which, of course results in blacks that aren't quite as black as they could be.
In-Plane Switching actually puts a separate transistor in control of each individual pixel. This is tricky, because they have to create these transistors on the glass of the panel, rather than making them in the traditional way on silicone. Also, up until recently, IPS was way slower in response times than the normal LCD. Even though IPS has been around for many years, it has only been recently where the techniques and technology to overcome these difficulties in manufacture and performance issues has come to market.
Now, IPS is "ready for prime-time" so to speak, and should be making it's way not only to the big name brands, but should eventually start appearing in the 2nd-tier vendors' products as well.
I hope that helps you understand these technologies in a way that wasn't too confusing, and gives you an idea about why I'm so excited to see this kinda technical, "boring" stuff on the floor at CES. When you know what the "boring" technical stuff does, it's pretty cool.

If that tech really addresses that issue, I may not care about not being able to get a SED anymore considering LCD sets will keep getting cheaper and improving their specifications. I might be able to get a 1080p set with this tech well before SED would have been launched, and cheaper too!

Thanks. Yes. It works. I've seen it JVC's "Clear Motion Drive" demo with my own eyes.
You might find these interesting:

http://www.jvc-asia.com/sg/images/products/colourtv/clearmotion2.jpg
They last chart is especially interesting, as it shows that, using the industry-standard Moving Picture Response Time chart, the MCFI panel (in this case the JVC "Clear Motion Drive") would show less blur to the eye than a 50HZ refresh panel would...even if that panel were capable of the theoretical 0ms response time!
[Please Note though that most good modern panels do support 60 HZ rates, but the chart is still quite impressive]

That surely is impressive! I assume that despite all the processing involved, there's no perceivable lag, is there?
If it really is like that, and assuming other departments will improve in LCD sets, namely contrast ratio and price, I can kiss SED sets goodbye!
I'll definitely have to look into this:
Consumers wary of buying new high-definition DVD players because of a technology war reminiscent of the days of Betamax versus VHS will soon have a new kind of DVD that might make the decision less daunting.
Warner Brothers, which helped popularize the DVD more than a decade ago, plans to announce next week a single videodisc that can play films and television programs in both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, the rival DVD technologies.
Warner Brothers, a division of Time Warner, plans to formally announce the new disc, which it is calling a Total HD disc, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Nice!
This 70-inch HDTV is one of the first to support the xvYCC, or x.v.Color as Sony has named it via HDMI 1.3. x.v.Color gives a color range of video that is 1.8 times greater than what was previously available, and is also supported by the four new Handycams Sony announced.
I wonder if there will be games for the PS3 in the future that takes advantage of the extended colour range that hdmi 1.3 offer.
I think I will wait until there is such a game, the current price tag of $33,000 makes me hesitate and not buying one right away. :)
Yeah the price is high, but the tech will probably also exist in the rest of the new X-series, so 40,46,52" sizes should follow shortly, for less than MSRP's of he current X-series (LCD panel prices are dropping 40% year on year).
EDIT: Plus LED backlights are cheper to fab than the current CCFL ones.

Well guys, I'm back from CES and that place was AWESOME!! Saw a lot of cool stuff from all the major players and I took a few pics. Hopefull, I covered most of what you guys were interested in. Here's the photos I took with a quick explanation of what you're looking at:
Here's a pic of GORGEOUS Sharp 108" professional LCD. This monitor was the largest LCD at CES and comes in Full HD glory. Absolutely beautiful set!
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00039-1.jpg
Here's the world's largest 4k x 2k LCD from Sharp. 2160p baby! The picture was stunning but there was quite a bit of noise in the image due to the fact the video scaler was quite fast enough to update that many pixels in realtime.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00040-1.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00041-1.jpg
Guess what? Yup, another HD disc format. This one's being called HD-FVD (Format Versatility Disc) and it's claim to fame is that it uses the same red laser that SD DVD's use, thus requiring no addition hardware purchase. The downside is that the disc maxes out at about 7GB and supports a max resolution of 1080i.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00004.jpg
Here's an interesting peice of new hardware from a small company that actually projects a 3D image of whatever it's hooked up to. I demoed it with WOW and the technology was promising.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00003.jpg
Format War OVER!!??? Here's some pics from the incredibly popular Hybrid PC drive and standalone player from LG. No word on price or availablity yet.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00024-1.jpg
Here's some OLEDs from LG that will be becoming more and more widespread in cell phones and digital cameras very soon. The clarity and 'pop' of these displays has to be seen to be believed. More on OLEDs later :)
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/CopyofDSC00014.jpg
Crysis, Oh yes Crysis. Got my hands on this baby for a few minutes while getting some straffing lessons from none other then the game's director. Advances physics and sublime graphics, what's not to love?

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/CopyofDSC00010.jpg
Ok guys, this thing was AMAZING! LG has created a 3D monitor that is absolutely INCREDIBLE! The wheels of the car in this photo literaly jumped off the screen. Once LG solves the very limited viewing angle problem this thing is going to blow the world away!
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00025-1.jpg
Here's a pic of Samsung's new LED DLP. The color reproduction and contrast ratio are spot on. Samsung has a winner with this tech.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00029-1.jpg
And now the Sony booth. Let's start things off with a nice view of their 82" Bravia LCD, shall we.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00030-1.jpg
Got my hands on LAIR for the first here as well. The dragon models were very detailed and lifelike. The sixaxis flight controls were also very intuitive and well responsive. They still need some work on the land combat however. The infrantry models were a little soft and the battle physics need some work.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00036-2.jpg
OLED OLED OLED. That's all I can say. These were definetely the show stealer for me. Sony has managed to make the sharpest, cleanest, brightest images I have ever seen. Ever. The 11" screens were a mere 2mm thick, and the heavenly 27" display was only 10mm thick. The 27" display was in Full 1080p and it was awe-inspiring to witness. It took me nearly 20 min just to soak it all in. The 1,000,000:1 (that's right a million!) contrast ratio is truly spectacular to see. Well. here's the pics already.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00034-1.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00031-1.jpg

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00033-1.jpg
And finally a pic of some interesting new technology from Philips called amBX (pronounced am-bee-ex) that was pretty cool. It expands on their ambilight TV technology and brings it over to PC gaming. The product comes with two of the 'light towers' shown in photo along the two fans shown aswell. Games written especially for this tech can use the lights to create a more encompassing visual experience. The fans are used to give you the sensenation of wind when, for example, you're riding a roller coaster. I demoed the tech with a racing game and the feeling of the wind in your face was pretty cool. Here's the pic.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/rickb10/DSC00038-2.jpg
Well, guys that's all I got right now. Hope you enjoyed (i did). Let me know if you have any specific questions about the show and I'll do my best to answer. Peace.

Um, I'm sure they're more focused on getting the game done (only 2 months to launch, which means it should be wrapping up right around now), than having a demo ready for CES, which isn't even game-centric, nor are games a big part of the show.

The crunch does NOT stop until the game is shipped, so are they not going to promote the game? They don't even have a TOKEN PRESENCE at the show, that is PATHETIC, whether people liked the Lair demo at CES or not, at the very least it was there, same with Motorstorm.
I don't care whether it's Sony or NT because it's BOTH THEIR FAULT, NT is ESPECIALLY at fault because they couldn't get their freakin' act together to get a TGS demo out, there is NO EXCUSE for missing a big show like TGS because they had a bug in the demo, is it even fixed? If so, why not just show the TGS demo? You have a new IP, the worst thing you can do is hide it so nobody knows about it, good or bad, you have to get it out there.
If CES isn't the place to show their game, then what is? GDC isn't until March.

It's important to make sure the game gets done, on the other hand, this thing needs to be shown, BADLY... like NOW. This is something that they CANNOT keep putting off like this, especially for a new IP without huge awareness, making sure the game sells isn't just Sony's responsibility, it's NT's responsibility to itself as a development studio as well.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v500/EvilTaru/Indifferent2.gif

No OLED is about 3-4 years away from having a decent featured prototype. The main problem is that because of its "organic pixels" they tend to die fast, having about a 5,000 hour life span. From what i've heard blue is what seems to go out first.
LED was also no that impressive as Samsung had 3 LED DLP tv playing 360 in various modes. Maybe it was the lighting but it looked worse than todays DLPs. Ofcourse SED wasa no show as we all thought. From what ive seen LCD is still the most promising tech with the best picture. I was suprised at the strides they have taken with it and would venture to guess that LCD will be the standard just like CRT was back in the day.
