Getting back to our trio of Blu-ray Disc players, my personal favorite was the PlayStation 3. This machine's picture and sound quality were nothing short of stunning, and its HDMI 1.3 connection and built-in Dolby TrueHD decoding give it a layer of future-proofing that the other players currently lack. I also appreciated its multichannel Super Audio CD playback and 60-GB hard disk for storing compressed music files. And even though I don't have much use for the PS3's gaming capabilities, I definitely got a kick out of Resistance: Fall of Man. The PS3's $600 price — several hundred less than the others — also goes a long way toward making it the Blu-ray Disc player of choice.

I am really rather impressed with the qualtiy, options, support, and interface of the BR player in the PS3. It is without a doubt the best feature available on the system and the best hardware feature of any of the next gen consoles.

I think Sony has done a great job of implementing the player into the PS3 package.

Sony did it this time.
with the PS2.. it had cheap DVD capabilties, same as Xbox1.

But it doesnt surprise me that PS3 Blu-Ray playback capabilities are somewhat superior to real or sandalone blu-Ray players out there. fast processing thanks to Cell and RSX

I wouldn't be surprised if PS3 remains the best Blu-ray player in the next 5 years to say the least. HDMI 1.3, upgradeable firmware with regular revisions, a specialised CPU, a dedicated GPU, standard HDD and online capabilities, it's silent, it's faster than the current players, it will become cheaper and cheaper while still being a next generation gaming system with PC possibilities, etc.

Seriously, you can't ask more out of a HD player at that price. It's a clear favourite in this category.

i always expected it to be of good quality, they did want to push it and use it to sell BD. the el cheapo drive in the ps2 was expected because dvd was already an established format and didn't need "proving".

Damn, I like how they actually made a solid movie player. I remember the PS2 DVD playback wasn't the best around when it came out, so it's very, very comforting to know that Sony plopped in some serious hardware for movie playback this time.

When Samsung first launched their player, they did a huge disservice to the format, it was just garbage, I'm not surprised that the PS3 is a very good quality Blu-Ray player or that it will end up giving the format its needed push into mainstream entertainment. I was recently at my local Best Buy, I was expecting to see both being shown on 1080p TVs, but instead they were showcasing both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD on smaller 720p TVs, which was completely pointless, IDIOTS.

my best buy gives blu-ray the right treatment. The don't even have a display for Hd-DVD, and they have a phat ass 1080p tv showing BD. It's on the samsung player though. As for PS3's quality, that's great to hear. I'm curious to see exactly how good it is compared to other players.

The Samsung is probably on high spiff right now, probably why they would use it to show Blu-Ray movies. I'm going to laugh when someone goes into a store asking for the PS3 and they try to sell them a freakin' Samsung because it has way more margin.:XD:

To be honest, while some people might not like the transparent blue Blu-Ray boxes, I think they're pretty decent, but the HD-DVD boxes are just freakin' DRAB, not attractive or catchy by any stretch of the imagination. The transparent white PS3 game boxes are the best though.

And Sony knocks it out of the ball park for sure! Damn i want a PS3 more than ever now! My wallet is empty and sad. Ah I must wait for Spring or Summer.

It is great to hear that the BluRay player in PS3 is above average quality. Prove to me that the $600 dollar stand alone price is piratically ripping Sony off!

I watched the Black Hawk Down BRD on my "lowly" 42" 720 Grand Wega and it looked absolutely stunning, amazing clarity. You "Full HD" whores can stuff it. ;) The PS3 is an awesome player for sure. They need to come out with that remote quick though.

^Question... Is PS3 the same as PS2 in the sense that L1 and R1 skip chapters and L2 and R2 ff/rw, and start is play/pause? If that's the case, then screw a remote! If my wireless controller does all that, there's no need for one.

Yep. Actually I have to admit the wireless controller makes for a pretty snappy input device... but I don't like having to bring up an overlay menu to tick on subtitles, slo-mo, chapters etc. I'm a lazy shit. :)

LOL, well I rarely use those anyway, save for the audio track selection. I like to mess around with the various mixes to see which sounds the best.

They need to have a remote, if people buy it for a cheap BD player then they may find it unnatural to use a game controller/joystick.

I guess the video controls when playing Blu-ray movies are faster than PS2's when playing DVD movies, right?

One thing which tells you nthat the guy isn't a gamer, and certainly doesn't own a gaming pc:
The only thing that rubbed me wrong was the PS3's fan noise, which made it much louder than any other gear in my system, including a DVR and Sony front projector. It was even noisier than my Toshiba HD DVD player, and that thing is LOUD!

Loud PS3? Uh yah, he does not own the leaf blower that is the 360!! DAMN!! I can hear my buddies 360 when I am the kitchen next to his living room whilst getting a beer!! That thing could deafen small animals and children for life if they get to close.

No really, I think that the cheap nature of the BD player in PS3 in comparison with other HD players is going to a deciding factor for many consumers. This coupled with the huge amount o great movies that are going to be exclusive to BD, and Sony has it all in the bag, the CASH BAG that is!!!

Any one got bets that when Microsoft sees Sony's success at BD that they "invest" in a new format to try and "replace" BD after PS3 is "gone"??? They always have to go after success......

^^ MS cannot do that since they have no backing from the movie industry nor were they were rich enough to buy out movie studios, heck they can't even buy out major gaming studies. People need to stop dream, MS doesn't have that kind of money in their reserve.

Now it would be possible if the US government subsidized (including buying out non-Sony firms) this MS-lead format would fly. ;)

To be fair, Sony should have released a remote with the 1st batch of PS3's like Microsoft did with 360, just something extra to make it worth while getting it early.

I thought the fan doesn't even need to spin when it's only playing movies?
