Thanks to BruceLeeRoy from Gaf for the link, I didn't realize how absolutely awesome the snow was until someone mentioned it and I didn't really stop to admire it like that, so I'm glad someone took a video of it. :cloud9:

I'm wondering if you can actually see your footsteps when you look back?
Actually I cleared this last week. It's an absolutely brilliant game, and although it might not redifine the genre or set any new standards it's reaks with quality to the core. I'd also like to mention that it's very fun :D

Should be finishing it tonight. Took me a week playing it every day, most shooters take 3 days to beat.
I think it's awesome but Insomiac and the PS3 can do so much better. Hope they're working on Resistance 2.

That is the best weather effects to be featured in a videogame ever. No if's and's or but's about it.

I haven't gotten to this part yet (still in Manchester) but I had to take a peak. Wowzers. I think MGS2's famous rain storm has finally been toppled. Kinda amazing it took this long to see something comparable (credit to Kojima Prod. fully leveraging PS2's unique fillrate capabilities).
I really dig Resistance's various particle fx like the dust and debris blowing around on the battlefields. It's not something that'll jump out at you immediately or make for pretty screenshots, but while you're playing these kinds of dynamic particle systems greatly enhance the atmosphere and immersion of the game world. Makes the environments feel very "alive" for lack of a better term. This snow fall is awesome in that way. Just the beginning for Cell and RSX folks. :)

I still think MGS2's rain has yet to be topped after watching that vid. I dont know how the hell Kojima and crew did it but the rain bounced off everything, it looked amazing.

Hell that probably isnt even the best snow clip... there is one where you are in damn near what looks like a blizzard. I cant remember what exactly it is before or after .... but there are Spires, Menials, Turrets, and fire. *Maybe Right Before you get to the indoors where you get the Stalker to fight the Goliath (Which Is a Damn Amazing Sight in its own right.)

You look at it in person and tell me that with a straight face buddy. I'm as big a mgs fan as they come but damnit if the particle fx in resistance's snow weren't better than mgs2's rain. It just is.
anyway.
I still can't get over how there is no slowdown ever.

Tuned to perfection, that's why.
The snow moves with te wind. Woah. Chalk one to Cell. The glass stuff is great too.
I think Half Life 2 is better, but easily the best console first person shooter this year. Easily.

Its funny that this thread got started because I thought I was the only that noticed. Me and my friend were beating the coop last night and we got to this part and I did a double take and I just like Holy Shit man, check out that snow!

Whoa, that looks pretty sick.
To the idiot who thinks the MGS2 rain was better.
No, it's not. I just played Tanker through about 6 times today (have to get the dogtags again, I stumbled upon the PC version of Substance) and there is no way in hell the rain looks better in MGS2 than that snow.
I'm talking about MGS2 in HD (1680x1050 with AA and AF) glory, and yes, the effects look damn hot (PS2 was a particle beast, if no one knew lol), but this snow beats it for sure.
I'm talking about the airborne precipitation btw, I've yet to see anything else.
P.S. I had no idea Substance was so packed with extra gameplay with all the Snake Tales, extra missions, and VR missions. I wish Subsistence had all this extra kind of stuff, but I guess the work on extras was put towards a cool online thing, which is also pretty fun, though I suck hard at it).

Rob the slob is extremely close to being a troll. Not just because of this thread. You'd have to be blind imo to say that the water in MGS2 looks better than that snow. And this is just a start (i.e. launch game). Just imagine what games will look like further down the line in terms of effects and such.

I feel bad for even bringing up the comparison now, but don't mind robtheslob. MGS2's rain storm was one of the coolest looking graphical tricks I can remember, that demo just absolutely floored everyone when it came out. I'd almost consider it something of a special fx milestone (if not a technical one). It's amazing to me how well it's held up with all the GPU advancements over the last 5 years (not to mention a next gen console). I honestly haven't seen anything that's topped it as far as weather fx are concerned... well, until now! ;)

Well as far as rain goes, the Downpour level of Gears of War probably has poor old MGS2....! That's quite nice. :D

It was more a transparency thing in Gears though, Resistance seems to be using a particle system for snow.

Just loaded it up. GoW downpour beats on MGS2. You got rain hitting the ground, flowing down the trees, pools of water on the ground undulating to the water. But yeah, the actual rain looks like a transparent effect on front of the screen, not a fancy particle system, but it's like the next step up from the MGS2 rain.
I'll load up MGS2. But yeah, it's a poor old last generation bugger...
<*Loads up MGS2*>
Not too bad actually...

Just started playing Resistance (finally got a working PS3) and my impression is that the game graphics is blah at first but started to progress to good looking later on. Is that true for those who've played it?

That's pretty much what the game is like, it looks and plays better and better the further you get in the game.

I thought you were guaranteed one MILR? Are you just being forced to wait for it?
frosty

^Everyone is having to wait because of supply and funding issues. In all honesty, I would expect to get it sometime early next year. We have 6 PS3's to buy, with one of them being European (which costs more), so I know I'll need the time to come up with the $ for the one's I'm buying. Understand that this contest isn't some corporate sponsored thing that allows us to throw out as many systems as we feel like whenever we want, this is something that me and Omega are doing out of our own pockets for the E-mpire community. We origionally were only giving away 3 units, but started feeling generous and gave out 3 more. So, be patient guys. We will get them out as soon as we possibly can.

Who woulda thought that snow is what now is my main reason for getting a PS3?
Now can anyone say it looks just as good in SD?
frosty

Well considering that the clip I saw was way lower than SD resolution, and I was still blown away, I'd say yes.

Man, you know what I just got from this vid? It's that no game on the PS3 has the excuse not to have ambient flying garbage and dust, etc. etc. where the environment constitutes it. I want to see newspapers flying in the air on a windy day, garbage and small and large particles of sand being thrown around during a sandstorm, and hail that hits stuff and makes a first bounce off the terrain and game objects like it would in real life.
P.S. Can I have a PS3 too? lol!
