Microsoft knocks $30 off the price of an Xbox console and announces reduced prices for several games.
Following plenty of speculation on the subject, Microsoft has today announced that effective March 30 its Xbox console will be available for $149.99 in the U.S. and $199.99 in Canada--representing a price drop of $30 in each territory. The equivalent of US$45 has also been knocked off the price of the Xbox in Mexico, where the console will now be available for 1,999 pesos.
"We have always been committed to providing gamers with the best entertainment experience available," said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president of Microsoft worldwide retail sales. "At this lower mass market price point, we're opening up this great system to an even broader audience of people who can experience Xbox for the first time."
In addition to its console price drop, Microsoft has also announced lower prices for a number of Xbox titles, as well as the launch of a Platinum Family Hits range of budget-priced games suitable for the whole family. Project Gotham Racing 2, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Counter-Strike will be selling for $29.99 effective tomorrow, while Xbox Music Mixer, Voodoo Vince, and Grabbed by the Ghoulies will be available for just $19.99.
The Platinum Family Hits range announced today, which is seen as an expansion of the existing Platinum Hits program, will comprise E-rated titles that are specifically targeted at a family-oriented audience. Several titles are expected to be added to the $19.99 range each year, and the initial lineup includes such favorites as Finding Nemo and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Woohoo... The year of the Xbox is going to be it's cheapest year!

You know, while MS is at it, why don't they just pay the US debt too. Pockets seem deep enough to me.
Remember that dream of a Ferrari in every garage? Well, adjust the dream a bit but MS could make it happen, right?
I mean they are eating the Hardware loss like a ham sandwhich and dropping software pricing is like adding a bag of lays chips.
I hope MS is hungry.

Have you ever known a product to cost 66% less to manufacture only a 2 years after inital development without a major change in the production process or parts?
I'm sure it has come down, they did bully nVidia to drop the GPU price (could be partly why their are using ATi next), since launch of course but I , along with most economic analysts believe they are still losing plenty of money on each sold and then you drop another $30.00 off and if they sell 3 million thi syear that's another $90,000,000 loss plus the whatever they were already losing.

I thought it might be because ATI is outperforming Nvidia now. That and since N5 and Xbox 2 will both be using the new ATI card 3rd party developers will develope more for there systems.

Yep, because you're quite the economic analyst yourself.
Jesus christ, how many times have we gone over this. They have plants in Mexico, China and Europe, and recently cut the manufacturing cost by quite a bit. So yeah, please stop with all this bull shit you keep spouting about how much Microsoft loses on the hardware, because you have no clue.

because you have no clue.
I suppose you do? So then, Bill Gates nephew, how much do they cost to manufacture?
Until analysts, funny how when an analysts says something bad about Nintendo you agree, say otherwise, I'll hold firm to the loss on hardware.
I mean how else do you explain losses of over $100,000,000 each quarter? Taxes? Piss poor finances? Or perhaps more money is going out than coming in?

I have no clue either - and I never said I did. But for some reason you always are magically able to pull some figures out of your ass, when you have no idea. It most likely is a loss, but not nearly as much as you think it is.

$149.99 is about 66% of the original estimated production cost. So that is how I obtained that figure.
MS has since lived with the idea of selling the system below cost and a price drop is an easy indicant of the production cost drop. How I obtained the $30.00 number.
3 million systems sold in one year. That is a conservative figure actually, 6-8 million is more likely.
$100,000,000 loss in a single quater. Another conservative figure. Do you really want me to go get the MS Home and Entertainment division quaterly results again? One quater actually posted a $300,000,000 dollar loss.
After 2 years on the market, Xbox H and E has lost over $2 billion dollars to the Xbox.
So as you can see, all my figures are well grounded in facts. So until you show me different figures, mine stand as close to truth as you will find.
Swifferman, the PS2 is no longer taking a loss because it has been out for much longer than the Xbox and does not contain a bulky hard drive or a built in cable modem or the more sophisticated hardware inside. Don't forget the 2 controller port price saving feature, Sonys official statement behind why the PS2 only has 2 controller ports....cost issue.
Im a chep ass so this is good for me. I was planning to buy a box but it was still near its 200 dollar retail. Now I can afford the box by my next pay check:D
