Revised: Game Industry Up 16% through November
The NPD Group has sent GameDaily BIZ its corrected data for year-to-date sales. As it turns out, year-to-date industry sales are not up 25 percent, but they are still up a very healthy 16 percent. We also have new data on console install bases and more.
Last week, GameDaily BIZ broke the news on a stellar November in which game industry sales were up 34 percent year-over-year. While the NPD's November data remains intact, errors in their historical data forced them to issue a retraction on such data points as year-to-date numbers, life-to-date sales, install base, etc.
Today we have received the corrected data, which reveals that the video game industry through November is tracking up 16 percent at $8.76 billion. Software overall is up 7 percent at $4.72 billion. Portable software in particular has done very well this year, up 19 percent at $1.17 billion. Console software was up 3 percent at $3.55 billion.
On the hardware side, year-to-date overall hardware sales are up 36 percent at $3.01 billion. Console hardware was up 69 percent at $1.88 billion while portable hardware was up only 2 percent at $1.13 billion.
We also have the corrected life-to-date install bases for the U.S. The PS2 through November was at 35.8 million users. Very close behind is the GBA with 34.3 million. In the more modern battle of the portables, the DS stands at 7.6 million versus the PSP's 5.7 million. The Xbox 360 has sold 3.4 million units in the U.S., and the newly launched Wii and PS3 come in at 476K and 197K, respectively. Along with the Wii console, 270K Wii remotes and 153K nunchuks were also sold.
Interestingly, from a next-gen DVD standpoint the Xbox 360 HD DVD peripheral sold 42K units. So technically, within the gaming universe the PS3/Blu-ray install base is nearly five times greater.
Shove up the number to Mr. Enderle (MS paid shill / MS lap dog) in regards to the HD-DVD installed base numbers..

Did Sony Kill Blu-ray?
This is more of a short update, but if you are watching PS3 sales Free How-To Guide for Small Business Web Strategies - from domain name selection to site promotion., you know that the company will have a hard time hitting 600,000 units sold by year end, and there are already rumors that it may have to recall some of the initial systems for problems.
This follows battery and camera recalls that have many questioning Sony's ability to execute right now. Sony just experienced an executive shake-up that may put the company in better shape. When a company has as many problems as it had over the last 12 months, corporate should -- and generally does -- take the majority of the blame.
The interesting thing is that when Microsoft and Sony came down on opposite sides, many assumed that Microsoft wouldn't even get a vote. No one anticipated that simply by creating a low cost HD DVD accessory, it could change that dynamic dramatically. It shouldn't have been a surprise, given that those of us who thought Blu-ray would initially win believed it because of projected PS3 sales -- and PS3 should have created a decisive win for Sony and Blu-ray.
Unfortunately, there were massive production problems and cost overruns, and Sony could only get a fraction of the systems into the market channel. As a result, Microsoft is projected to have 10 million Xbox Latest News about Xbox 360s by the end of this year, against Sony's 600,000 PS3s. If Microsoft has just a 20 percent attach rate for its US$200 drive -- which is selling out, by the way -- it will have nearly 4x the number of HD DVD drives in consumer hands.
If you think about it, Sony also ends the year behind Nintendo Latest News about Nintendo, which is expected to sell around 1 million Wii game systems. This suggests that while the PS3 should have assured the success of Blu-ray, Blu-ray may have assured the failure of the PS3 -- at least for 2006. Now that is just weird.
What Mr.Enderle did not understand is, both HD-DVD & Blu-ray use the same f**king blue laser diode. If there is supply constraint for blue laser diode how would HD-DVD have more blue laser diode? Sony is the second largest manufacturer of Blue laser diode after Nichia. Toshiba,MS and everybody source their diodes from Nichia.
PSP is doing decent compared to DS, its not being over run by DS like what its being portrayed in the media. It more like 60 - 40 split.
If enough PS3 is available I believe it has a decent chance to catch up 360 numbers in NA
Bad news: PS3 numbers. Sony has about two weeks to sell 1+ million units.!!!!
