do you mean "shell" or "self", what on earth is a "shelf"?

I've never heard of it before...it must be a yellow dog specific thing, a quick google search revealed nothing, this is exactly why i set up my wiki which i will soon unleash.

Perhaps he meant "self", in which case it would mean logging in as root and adding yourself with "adduser". Type man adduser in terminal for the syntax and what options there are.

its not Yellow Dog specific, its Enlightenment specific.
I am trying to formulate a viable solution.
For now, until I do further research, I coudl only recommend deleting the .e directory in your home directory.
Its what should hold most of your e17 settings...removing this and restarting X will get you back to square one
(i.e. you lose all your already changed desktop settings)
## open gnome-terminal
left click > run command > gnome-terminal
## once you have the terminal open delete the directory
> rm -rf .e
## now restart X and log back in to see if it worked, praying and/or crossing fingers may help.
## btw - you restart X by hitting CTRL + ALT + Backspace
## NOTE: restarting X will kill any open X applications - gaim, firefox, openoffice
## you should save any/all open files before restarting X
Once I have some more familiarity with Enlightenment and its tools, I should have better answers for you.
Cheers,
D
