8. PlayStation 3: Late, Expensive, and Incompatible
When it was announced in spring 2005, the Sony PlayStation 3 was going to be the greatest thing to hit home gaming since a hedgehog named Sonic. Then came the delays. By the time the PS3 arrived, it was six months late, and Nintendo's cheaper and more innovative Wii had stolen much of its thunder. At $599 for the 60GB model, the PS3 is twice the price of the original PlayStation 2, yet research firm iSupply--which describes the PS3 as having supercomputer qualities--estimates that Sony still loses more than $200 per unit.
Thanks to manufacturing delays, Sony shipped an estimated 150,000 units for the North American launch, or less than half the number it had originally planned. And the PS3 was incompatible with more than 200 PlayStation and PS2 games, though Sony is addressing that problem through online updates.
The good news? Game-crazed youth are buying up PS3s and reselling them on eBay for double the asking price. And unlike, say, Sony batteries, they don't catch fire--at least, not yet.
Big Mistake: Trying to turn a supercomputer into a gaming device.
Bigger Mistake: Failing to drive a stake through the heart of Nintendo when the opportunity offered.

Note: I just got the system, can't I hear some good news in the US?

Valid points in there don't make for BS but I do think all these "Worst of..." articles are stretching it way too far. Give it a year, and then if its still going slow, then these articles are justified.

It's 2000 all over again. People need to face it A)the system will not always be $500-600 dollars B)even if they sell to 20% of their base thats 20 million C) They just released A MONTH AGO.

At least it wasn't number 1!
Oh... That was the Sony laptop batteries. :)
Seriously, I'd take anything written by a PC magazine with a pinch of salt.
augh, more bullshit.

Agreed. This is bull shite at it's finest...Those magazines, analysts and what not must be quite stupid to write crap just like this at this point. Can't they see the system has just launched (And that goes for all 3)!? Give it time and then compare and make your damn opinion. If not anything else look back and see how it was with the ps2 and how that turned out. Not to say it will go exactly the same this time, but it shows the system was judged way too fast. It indeed is like 2000 all over again...

the laptop batteries are a well deserved no 1.
I hate it when they consider the price and not the feature set. How on earth is the ps3 expensive when it can replace a full blown pc and play any game on almost any other game console ever designed? and not to mention BD.

I'm saying.
It's expensive but the only thing it doesn't do is make toast. But if you know a thing or two about electronics and tinkering you might find a way to make it do that. So I mean, shit, man. Trade in your entertainment stuff for a PS3 and you're set.

C'mon guys. I know we love the PS3 and/or Sony, but I think it's easier to admit some of it's negatives rather than deny it. We can put the delay and and price aside, as they have a good excuse for those, but the BC is hard to pass through especially after the Xbox360 BC fiasco (and a lot of e-mpirer attacked MS and used Sony's BC promises as its shield).
But should we take the article seriously? No. But it does say 2006, not the future.

I'm with you Marjoh. I can say for one that when I got the PS3, I wasn't "utterly blown away". I was hoping I would be, but that's mostly my fault for hyping it up so much.
Having said that, the PS3's functionality is so rigid right now that it kills me. There's no going to the XMB when you're in a gmae whatsoever. Hell, when you're in the XMB, you can't even look at you settings and listen to music at the same time. IT CAN'T EVEN HOLD MY PLACE IN THE SONG WHEN I GO DO OTHER THINGS. What the Cell is going on here? I thought I was buying some sort of super computer with the PS3. I know that a lot of these things are supposed to be remedied over time through firmeware updates, but out the door, I have to say my first impressions aren't overwhelming to say the least for my $600 purchase.

i do agree, Sony should have released with better firmware, because at launch and at present it has been crap. Very limited functionality, i know it is being improved but that is no excuse for launching with it. Imagine what it would have been like if they launched in march 06?

firstly i wouldnt bother with the article. i mean honestly, they had said the last best thing in home console gaming was Sonic. Sonic was fairly good back in the day but there have been much better games and franchises since then.
2 - a PC magazine trying to make console gaming look bad? is it true? would they really try to reaffirm that PC gaming is better to all their PC gaming readers? how shocking.
i'm a Wii fan but even i see that PS3 has alot of innovation built to last for a long while. is it a tech screw up? i dont think so but they screwed up in managment resulting in lackluster launch numbers.

To show that you're all a bunch of crybabies who couldn't be rational to save your lives. For god's sake people, there wasn't anything that off about the article. Granted, the backwards compatibility thing was blown way out of proportion, but considering that the article is actually headlined as a list of screwups, I think "subjective" is a requirement (that and the iSupply figures which are absurd, but you can't expect a press outlet would be able to know better, and it's not like those who know the genuine figures are going to spill the beans). If there was anything that Sony screwed up on with the PS3, it was the supply shortage. That IS the one main thing worth bringing up. Everything else is otherwise insignificant, really.
Of course some people would like to pretend that everything is hunky-dory and every single press outlet is overrun by fanboy conspiracies. Yeah, it wasn't late, it wasn't ill-supplied, and it isn't expensive. I don't know what these guys were smoking.
