Just wanted to hear your thoughts.
From my memory it was
Beat 'em up - Final Fight
Fighter - Starting with Streetfighter 2
RPGS - Final Fantasy VII
FPS - Halo
What do you see as the next big thing. Each generation it shifts.
My wishes are on a 2D revival.
Though I honestly think Fighting games might have a chance to come back to the light with online play. Starting with the Super Smash Bro's online and Soul Calibur online.
4D, developers are too lazy to design anything else

Well, this generation there's huge success in "nongames", but considering most of the people who play them are not gamers, you can not really call that the current big genre. If I had to predict a shift, I would say there would be none. It doesn't look like the majority of Xbox 360/Playstation 3 developers are wanting to stray too far from "lol i am teh sn1p3r" games (or similar but more realistic, like GoW), and the Wii is just a perfect match for shooters. This will probobly be another shooter-dominated generation.
Shouldn't this be in General Gaming?
But yeah, like Phoenixphire said, gaming is stuck in a rut, and I'm afraid the "big thing" is still going to be Halo, GoW, etc.

HAHA. You are right, I posted this in the wrong section.
Still Fighting was huge in the 32 bit era. Then next generation after the first year it died down. I'm thinking the same will happen with FPS. People just want a change after a while.

non-games.
Take a look at the worldwide sales of Brain Age, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing WW, etc. Games without concrete goals will be the next big thing. As gaming becomes more widespread and mainstream, Wii and DS are sitting pretty.

Anything but 'sandbox' games to become the next big thing please.
I hate 'sandbox' games, so pointless and boring.
I would love to see more 90s style action games. I loved 90s action movies and there is no game to match that feeling yet.
Although Sony's 'Eight Days' looked interesting and is exactly what I want but for all we know that game is already canned since nothing has been shown of it for a long time.

FPA. Metroid is awsome at it, but there needs to be more of them.

I'm a fan of side-scrolling nonplatformers, like Metroid and Castlevania, but there's no chance a 2D genre will become the next big thing.

Agreed.
When it comes to videogames I kind of am. It's just not why I play videogames. I play it for the experience it puts me through. Not too bothered with fiddling around in a game in order to have fun.
In fact I find that tedious.

It's probably going to be first person shooters again this generation.
Nintendo might actually get something right though :D

Retro and simplicity. That's the new big old thing.
The games are too expensive to make, too short, and too complicated to play. Too much investment just to have a bit of fun. They're also too expensive to buy.

Bah games are not too complicated to play . They are all very simple. People just don't want to invest a few minutes to figuring it out.
Just imagine if we all said hey riding a bike is to complicated lets never try .

Well I grew up in a big city and never deemed it necessary to learn how to ride a bike!
I agree with you on the "people not bothering to put few minutes in" idea. It's because the idea of 'gaming' is still a bit cursed and everytime I say "hey, try this game for a second it's amazing you'll like it" I get "hmm...naah"

well i don't see the problem because everything we do takes time to learn.
There is nothing in life that we just know. We take months to learn to walk , to ride a bike , to drive . Some of our fav pass times take years to learn. Some of the basics of baseball can be had quickly. But all the rules take years to know .
Non games are fun for people becasue you can invest very little time in them as they have no endings . So if you play for 5 hours you'd played the game.

I'd say FPS will stay popular-it's the new fighter...
Truly though-I expect Playstation store games and DS/Wii titles to really have huge numbers.
Games like Calling all Cars, Brain Age, Wario Ware, Trauma Center, and Flow, really makes you feel like a kid again! I think there's a huge market for these types of games...
Having 20 or 30 pick-up and play games with motion control store on your HDD (no loading!) is probably more appealing than the MGS4 or Halo 3 for many people. Seeing 7 or 8 million downloads of a online game is a very possible situation this generation...
So to be frank-I think the next "in-thing" is pick-up and play, and motion control. And Wii will spearhead the charge...

Spore.
I can't wait much more!
Well, I can and I will wait.
But I won't want to!
I wish Lucasarts would make some more 2D Point-And-Click games.
The new episodes of the new Sam And Max are some of the only games I'm looking forward to.
(It's a slight shame they're not made by Lucasarts though.)
MORE GRIM FANDANGO TYPE GAMES!!!
I also want more mystery games, but that's getting off topic.

I think 2D point-and-click mystery games made by LucasArts will be the next big thing in gaming.
