after all, who would want a top of the line next gen system with full media center functionality over a piece of plastic worth a few bucks!?

I dont know about you guys, but my parents would never have bought me something like the PS3 for Xmas ever!! It's just so damn expensive costing me I think around $745 CAN. Realistically speaking from my own personal experience, Ive never seen anyone or know anyone who had parents spend this kind of money on an Xmas gift, its just completely pricey even for a holiday gift!!

neither, it took 3 months of solid nagging for my mum and dad to buy me a 300$ AUD PS2 or a 199$ AUD PS1

It's best to always start your argument with "Now I haven't bought anything for a long time and I don't spend much cash and as you know, Christmas is coming...."

You might also want to squeeze in a few good words about the gift you want (in this case a PS3). But don't just brag about it. so for example your dad is out of HDD space on his laptop? Say "See? If we had a PS3, I could transfer some stuff on there."
Or maybe your mom wants to do shopping but is too lazy to leave the couch, you can say "See, if we had a PS3, you could turn it on now and do online shopping."

That's all the tip I can give you, good luck guys.
For all the Europeans out there, skip your Christmas present so you'll have a good argument come March..."As you know I didn't ask for a Christmas gift this year..."

Yeah, a PS3 would be a completely unrealistic wish here, too. At most, my family would buy me a Wii, if they weren't sold out...

I did get a ~200 USD gift card for the electronics store where I preordered it though, so guess what I'm gonna use that for...

I would like to take this moment to state that I fucking hate gift cards. Why would anyone limit the abilities of cash. I get these damn gift cards for Lowes or Sears (as if I give a shit about tools, hells bells the only thing I work on is my pc and how many damn screwdrivers does a guy need).

-end rant-

True. I've tried to explain this to my family, but they keep giving me gift cards.
