i picked up a ps3 + resistance today. i only have an sdtv so i know that's a big factor, but resistance did not impress, graphically. looks like medal of honor for ps2. but it's not just my sdtv, as the motorstorm demo looked pretty good on it. i had noticed before in magazines and stuff that resistance wasn't a very great looking game but i thought it'd be more impresive in person. i dunno how much an hdtv will improve it (maybe it scales down worse than motorstorm?). i do like the game tho from what i've played. online is pretty cool too. just not leaps above ps2 in any way (ai doesn't seem much smarter, etc).

Give it some time. The first part of the game is pretty bland. As you get further, the crazy alien architecture takes over and it gets awesome.

Really? I'm honestly surprised that you not only weren't impressed with the graphics, but the AI didn't impress -- the AI in this game is the best I've seen in a shooter. The hybrids are relentless, accurate, and extremely deadly. It's like you take the Elites from Halo, increase their intelligence/deadliness 10-fold, and make them every enemy in the game instead of just squad leaders of lesser fighters
Graphically it's not a mind-blower but it's got lots of subtle touches throughout the game that are just "WOW" type things, namely the snow and the smoke effects. Also, the scale of the game and the levels is extremely impressive IMO. And, kill a hybrid and look at his corpse and then click R3 to zoom in on his face -- that's good detail (and slightly disturbing )
If you aren't impressed with the opening level, play through places like Grimsby, Nottingham, the opening sequence at South Command, and the River Thames for some ridiculously nice and grand scenery, and I think you're appreciation will grow with your experience of the game.

resistance isn't a mind blower but it is your SDTV.

Look at the origional twisted metal. The graphics are terrible. However, throughout the series they steadily improved. Every system has it's titles that don't max out it's graphical capabilities, so don't think that it's because of limitations of the system that resistance isn't mind blowing. download the GT demo, and then you can have a graphical showcase to write home about.

This is by far my favourite PS3 game atm, but I have to disagree with the AI, my computer allies were dumb as hell, literally I found them clipping through objects still firing there guns without enemies being anywhere near. In worst case scenarios they just run towards an enemy and stop, then die a retarded death.
The hybrids were nothing special either, after playing Half Life 2 I guess there's just a standard now I expect in games, although RFOM did not meet this standard the game is still wonderful, beautiful and a very good pick up for any fps and Sony fan!

I thought HL2 AI was over-rated. There was so much hype about it I was shitting my pants as I was about to begin the game but about an hour in and I was like "errr...fucking idiots"
Like I was hiding in a thick doorway and they kept passing me by one by one where they got picked off by my shotgun. One of them finally ran looking in my direction but he wasn't shooting.
Anyway, on topic. I have always said that Motorstorm = The launch title with not much content but awesome graphics and gameplay and Resistance = So many weapons and so much stuff to do + online play but only a 'slightly above average' graphics.

i found hl2 AI pretty darn good but not brilliant. One of the best games though.

Yeah, no doubt about that.
Only thing that surpasses the awesomeness of HL2 is MGS.
Any more stories about the AI of Resistance?
Also do you guys think this game will be worth a buy come March or is it just not good enough to stand up to the big three (Lair, Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword)?

Yes masteratt, the story isnt what has my attention all this time, its the damn good seamless fun of the online game which keeps you coming back for more intense games!! A must buy regardless of time since its release!!

You don't think so? I loved that in Joe Rybicki's review of Resistance in EGM he said Resistance is a great game, without qualifying that statement by saying "for a launch title." I think the online mode is friggin' fantastic and makes for loads of fun -- I've just been getting back into it and I have a blast every time (except for tonight when I was in a CTF game with infinite ammo and everybody just spammed their 40mm grenade launcher rounds... so retarded). The story was very solid but I think they held back a little bit too much for a sequel IMO -- the little clip at the very end was very intriguing though.
Also with this new patch you can see that IG is keeping a close eye on the game and the changes that should be made, even ones that people didn't really ask for too -- this is a huge boost to the game's longevity.
Masteratt, I definitely recommend purchasing this game when you get your PS3. It's a great shooter with a very cool story, great online, and a very fine arsenal :)

I don't have a PS3 yet or an HDTV (although I've got a 42" SharpXD1E 1080P LCD on it's way next week :) ) so I can't comment on resistence, but from playing the 360 on an SDTV I have noticed some games look great and others need an HDTV to look good.
Dead Rising on an SDTV looks pretty good except for the tiny text, but from what I've seen it only looks slightly better on an HDTV. Test Drive Unlimited looks pretty average on an SDTV, but looks much better on an HDTV.
I think some games really need an HDTV and others look great on any TV.

Isn't that Nintendo's motto? :bigpimp:
On topic, i like Resistance. I am really bad at FPS games as i cant seem to co-ordinate my two thumbs on the analogue sticks. I die a lot... Graphically i love the game though :)
Any tips for a basically first time FPS player would be nice...

All I'm saying, Resistance... Get it while it's hot. :) I look at Motorstorm and GT HD Concept and the cracks in Resistance's graphics are already starting to show.
I think the gameplay in Resistance is spot on, lots and lots of great ideas.
>batou Practice! Shoot for the head! :)
Also best gun in the game seemed to be the bullseye, and if you see a group of chimera together, don't shoot at them, grenade them!

Resistance will not age well my forum chums...Resistance might not age well but I think it'll still be worth a buy at the euro launch (even though I haven't played it...no PS3 lol). A year from now it might look terrible compared to the newest games but in a few months it'll still hold its ground imo. Even if there is some jaw droppers out. And like Sephiroth_VII said regardless of the graphics..the graphics not aging well shouldn't stop you from playing a great game.
Maybe in a years time it wont be playable (The origanal TimeSplitters anybody?) lol. I remember thinking those graphics look great. But then Time splitters 2 came out and you take a look at the first one. It looks pretty ugly in comparison lol.

Or FF VII vs. VIII.
VII looks rather terrible compared to VIII, but most still agree that it's the best FF ever.

Exactly...and I remember when we were actually impressed by FF7 lol. which is hard to believe. But I remember when I thought GT2 on PS1 looked better then racing games on the dreamcast even though GT wasn't as clean in terms of textures and such.

Actually, I still play the original Timesplitters multiplayer every once in awhile :-p
It has a different feel from the other 2 and it still takes me back to the days when the PS2 launched and I played it non-stop :-D

Hmm...thats funny lol. I haven't actually played the 1st game so maybe I was off base saying it wasn't playable. But the graphics haven't aged well..thats for sure (at least in screens). And I thought it was pretty impressive when it debuted.

gnz, My brother is playing his PS3 on a SDTV and had the same overall impressions of resistance at the start of the game. Once he made it to later levels he thought the visuals were fairly impressive. He was very impressed with the visuals of the GTHD & Motorstorm demos. I'm really curious how the PS3 looks on a SDTV, but I'm too lazy to hook up the PS3 to the only SDTV I have in the house; it's in my bedroom... Peace

I played Resistance today for the first time and I must say it was a fun game, but not as good as people have been saying it is. I found the AI tough and very smart because they were very aggressive with their approach to battles and I liked that a lot. The graphics were good, but not great; I didn't expect the graphics to look as good as Gears of War just yet. The game was still overall a lot of fun, but I don't think it should have been rated as high as IGN reviewed it because honestly it wasn't nearly as fun or pretty as it should have been. The game had decent level designs, but they seemed kinda bland for what I've played. The game kinda starts out pretty slow and it felt kinda repetitive as far as scenery and gameplay goes. There really isn't much to this game, but it's still fun in short bursts IMO. I still haven't had the pleasure to play online so I can't judge that. As for the controls they were decent, but my only gripe is that every time I would tap the R2 button it wouldn't always switch my weapon. That was very irritating at times.
