Whaaaat? =-o =-o =-o =-o =-o =-o =-o =-o =-o
I thought you had found that old Cell mirror demo which changed the hair style and makeup of whoever's face was being captured by the camera, but damn, that was very surprising!!! Can anyone confirm that???

Nah, i'm trying to contribute to the forums, so I would not waste your time with that old news. I have read comments about people confirming this, so I bet it's true! :)

It's small things like these that shows the consumers that the company cares about their product.

Honestly, I don't feel that any "confirmation" is needed, as the thoroughness of the tests they run in that video do a good enough job of confirming this feature. Wonder what other little surprises they have for us?

I just tried it out and I don't think it's true. Sometimes it would zoom in on faces, other times it would zoom in on trees and other objects. Sometimes it would not zoom in on faces.
It's very possible whomever did that spliced it together when it did happen to react properly or something of that sort.

I'm sorry, but that's a pretty ignorant thing to say. Just because someone makes a video on the internet that looks convincing we should believe it without question?

I'll give you that much, though one would think that one of the people commenting on the page would have said something by now if it were a bunch of crap.

So it just randomly zooms in and out of things and randomly moves across?
In that case, that guy must have spend a lot of time making that video.

Well, I'd say that 25-50% of E-mpire members have a PS3, so why don't you guys all try it out and post videos of your results?

Can someone please explain whats s amazing about this? All it was was a video zooming in and out on peoples faces, where was the detection?

being able to pick the faces out of the rest of the objects in the image.
a while back, Sony mentioned a PS3 probability that it may be able to do facial recognition. they said a game could be made to 'detect' from your facial expression if you are scared, laughing, etc. and have the beat of a game change dependently. they also said they could make PS3 detect who exactly is playing it and automatically load the profile and game saves of that person.
this was mentioned along time ago and nothing was concrete. just brain storming. I am having trouble accessing the videos so I can't comment on them at the moment (I see the HTML layout of YouTube).
on a totally different note- yet still talking about fancy camera uses- a team out there claimed they could make a camera that can actually detect and monitor blood pressure and heart beat. and then there is that famous French team with their "3D anywhere" concept.

Would be cool if Sony used this "Face Detection" with Eyetoy:

This slideshow thing maybe is a teaser on things to come... :)
Edit:
Well, if Sony said that, then they would not be unfamiliar with the concept.

Shivers, that is pretty impressive, i would wager it is legit. I see massive potential for this kinda tech in the future with the eyetoy and it's games, +rep!!!

My guess is that it isn't facial recognition at all, it just zooms in on the most "complex" area of the image, which 9 times out of 10 is a face. If you look at all the examples, it is a pretty blurry background, or very dull, or else a simple pattern with the face sticking out.
Sephiroth_VII

Well, then try an exiting bg. It should be easy to test.
But your idea sounds more legit than that the slideshow program would have built-in facial recognition.

i doubt it true facial recognition, if it were CELL would be plotting lines on the photo on a graph but it is interesting anyway.
I think it just looks for a circle shape with 2 eyes, nose and mouth
LaLiLuLeLo
12-26-2006, 06:35 AM
it totally works. it's like...smart or something.
If it can't detect a face, it just does this pan 'n' scan thing.

yes but that is not to say it is "true" facial recognition.

whatever that means.
Whether a magic trick is real or false it's equally impressive.

There's no true facial recognition because a computer isn't alive. It's all fake. The point is to fake it enough that the person think the computer can really recognize it, when in truth, it's all just bits, pixels, and pattern to the computer.
Sypher

So when it recognizes a face it zooms in on it? Huh...........

Yes that is correct but some facial recognition software/hardware that plots the data on a graph and analysis it is very advanced and is in many circumstances very very accurate.
But you are right, computers are fundamentally stupid.

This XMB facial recognition technology may not be that advance, but it's pretty cool for a slide show like this.

This isnt a hard thing to do, many screen savers that run on a pentuim 90 Windows 95 pc can find the faces in photos. This isnt much of a impressive feat of power, its more of they added some thing to the slide show thats been done before. Not that its bad or anything to have but its not hard to do.

Agreed, This is not true facial recognition but it is nice anyway and makes photos more interesting
Meh, its not that hard to program. Facial recognition is used in many things nowadays. This is only very basic.

I just tried it with a dozen pictures (8 mega pixel, well lit, some with one face on background, some with several, faces off center of the image), and it seems to work very well. I would like to know if this is just an illusion or not. How many of you actually tried it ? What are your results ? I am beginning to be very impressed by this. It is not that trivial to achieve, and a first for such a consumer product.

well Sony have gone on record saying that with the power of cell you don't necessarily need a specialized camera in order to have eye-toy type abilities. perhaps this is an indication that everything is set to go when Sony decide to release the patch. hold onto your cameras fellas, i think this is going to be goooood

This is a cool feature. I love how some people just love to downplay the PS3 and this feature too, when the other consoles doesn't even have something like this.

it makes you drool to consider what else the PS3 contains... i doubt it can double as a toaster though, it doesn't get hot enough... kudos to MS for opening up that possibility.
