View Full Version : The Crossing - A new type of FPS?

We will make this sweet and simple as the topic it tackles is a bit baffling already. We are all familiar with FPS games. We are also well versed with the concept of multiplayer. Now there is a certain developer, Arkane Studios, that is currently working on a title that merges the two. Uh, Counter Strike? Not quite.
Arkane Studios wouldn't divulge any concrete details about the project. They added, helpfully if we may add, that this is just simple math: single player plus multiplayer equals crossplayer. Well, we don't know about that but we hope the short video below will be of some help to you.
At any rate, we are all okay with anything that expands the genre and the industry. We will just inform you as more things come about this crossplayer thing come up.

Wow that trailer explained a whole lot of nothing. It looked like CSS. IDK we'll have to wait and see. Its coming frome Valve so hopefully it will be good. BTW why is this on the PS3 board?

Official Note: VG has been forsaken not only from these forums, but from the entire internet for resurrecting forgotten demons.
On Topic:
I don't know how much of this is relevant, but the thought of having the CPU controlled enemies in a game played by real life gamers. so it would be like the world vs. you in a multiplayer match, only it takes place during the main game quest.

That was the most tediously teasing thing ever.
I bet it's not even something that great since the guy said "most developers already wanted to do this but weren't sure how it would be received".

Cross player? Gotta love these new jargons.
Isn't that like.. ONLINE CO-OP? My question is do people want another Half-Life 2 when it's not called Half-Life 2?

I hate the pedigree-dropping, just show the damn game and let people decide whether to be impressed by it or not. I think the problem with how games get cover is that it's almost like I'm forced to take the gaming media's word for an early project "having potential", some games are great before they're even shown and some are dead in the water from the get-go, I'd say show the games to me and let me decide whether it has potential.

Honestly, thinking back on the awesome experience that was single player HL2, if they can pull off something even more epic than that in a multiplayer environment, I'm all for it. However I question what type of system they have in place to keep things challenging for all players, so that the ones that suck can't just hide behind the good ones and win anyway.

So, it's an MMOFPS, I guess?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, by the word "crossplaying", I think he means this:
Game has, beside multiplayer or integrated within multiplayer, an arcade version of playing, to the final boss. Like Contra, but within full high-end enviroment and of course multiplayered to 24 or 12 players playing an arcade version of that game. That would be good.....Contra NextGen
So, it's an MMOFPS, I guess?
but if it is just another MMOFPS, there wouldn't be anything new. there are a number of those on PC. there are some free ones out there too. check www.gunzonline.com
as for consoles, Huxely will be the first MMOFPS, IIRC.
speaking of which, did the latest Test Drive make it to be considered the first MMODriving game on consoles on X2? I lost track of news for that title.

an innovative FPS???? it does sound a lil bit far fetched....what they might be tryin' to do is prolly try to implement multiplayer as part of story of the single player....some parts of the single player will need multiplayer
