View Full Version : PlayStation 3 kiosks freezing up ... on purpose!

Have you ever spent any time in a Best Buy, EB Games, or GameStop playing their PlayStation 3 demo unit and have it freeze up on you? No, you haven't... or so I was told by a Sony rep a few days back. Read on to find out more.
Just before the launch of the PlayStation 3, I walked into a local EB Games and noticed that they had finally (three days prior to launch) received their demo kiosk. Problem was, it was turned off. Right next to the hulking beast of a setup, two teenagers were wailing on "You Really Got Me," the Guitar Hero II demo, and the PlayStation 2 was in full force.

Curious, I asked the annoyed, bored-looking clerk why anyone would dare do something like turn off a PlayStation 3 (The penalty for such an offense? Death, in some states).

"Well," he sighed, "it's locked up on us about five times. And we got it this morning."

He explained to me how when the machine would freeze, he would have to unlock the kiosk and hard reset the machine -- every time. It was easier, he said, to just leave it off and let people drool all over the protective plastic that housed what appeared to be an empty shell of a PlayStation 3 -- if you don't know, the actual unit is housed below the kiosk and is not visible. This, to me, was a fine explanation, and not surprising considering reports I've heard of units freezing at trade shows; and hey, the damned thing is cased in metal with little or no ventilation. I'll let it slide.

Cut to a busy Christmas Eve: The same EB Games is bustling with last minute shoppers; a child knocks over a World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade promotional display; frantic mothers blather on about games they can't remember the names of; and in the middle of it all I spotted a Sony PlayStation retail rep frantically cleaning off the very same kiosk I had mentioned earlier. I wasn't going to let him get away.

"Happy Holidays," I said.

"Oh, hi! I'll be done here in one second and then I'll turn on the unit so you can get a glimpse of the future."

"Oh, I know all about it," I said, trying not to laugh. "I have the future at home. In my closet. Still in the box. Trying to sell it. No takers."

After a short, awkward silence, I decided to go in for the kill.

"So dude over there," I said pointing to the busy clerk, "says he keeps the kiosk off because it keeps freezing up."

"Nope. No it doesn't."

"Well, actually, yeah. It does. I've seen it happen myself."

"No. It doesn't. We did that on purpose," he said.

"You make the entire console lock up on purpose because ... why?"

"We do that so that people won't play it all day long," he explained. "Specifically during Motorstorm, we made it freeze up a lot."

I'm totally confused at this point, completely stunned at what I'm being told because it's the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. I let him rattle on for a while, trying to convince me (and probably himself) that yes, Sony went out of their way to have their consoles lock up so that the masses will not spend hours upon hours basking in all its glory.

He went on about how a PlayStation 3 shouldn't be hard to get now, and how they're shipping them out of Japan daily. I waited for him to spill the beans on the Cell processor powered, mechanized laser-breathing dragon they use to import the consoles to the States, but he revealed nothing.

When the Sony rep was done and finally turned on the future, I decided to stick around and play some Motorstorm (which is pretty damned awesome). Didn't freeze up on me once.

Later, I was told by a Best Buy employee that they were told the same thing -- the locking up and freezing was intentional. So, if you're sitting at home and your console locks up on you or your Bluetooth controllers aren't performing the way they should be, don't worry about it. It might be on purpose.

Hmm, weird. It's probably a fake story, but you never know.

That is probably the stupidest thing I have ever heard, everybody in this forum is now dumber because of it.

Seriously, this is just absolutely freakin' stupid, there is no real reason they would do something like this - it would give them a bad reputation, also i don't feel there was many issues at these stores, i mean 1 out of 100 stores may have a crash and in some cases no wonder, but also there may be 30 people in the store, some of which belong to forums, even if 30 people posted a crash people would consider this a huge issue when it is not. Machines break, manufacturing is not always perfect, not really Sony's fault, if anything the PS3 has been very reliable for most consumers, i have not hear of many people claim problems hardware related, i can't say the same for the 360 which is quite possibly the most defective system in modern times, even more so then the PS2. If anything we know from movies and photos that the PS3 uses very high quality Japanese capacitors and semiconductors.

I had the ps3 lock up on me after seeing it for the first time after 3 minutes. I guess they shipped all the crappy consoles to canada. lol.

Motorstorm does freeze and reboot to the PS3 OS after about 10-15 minutes of play. I know this from playing it at the best buy kiosk for hours. You can usually only get in 2-3 races before it boots you back to the menu. That is what the rep was referring to, this guy just took the overheating console thing and confused it with that. I've also seen the consoles overheat, to where a hard reset was required. When the BB employee reset it for me, I stuck my arm near the actual console and it was indeed pretty damn toasty in that little enclosure.

Riiight and I guess the X360 is less powerful so people don't get too much quality visuals in their eye

And the Wii is cheap because Nintendo cares about consumers

What a load of bullshit.
This was obviously written by a shitty guy on a bored day.

*feels dumb for even replying to this*

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just the demo running on a timer or something.

I know for a fact that it does. I can almost count down to when my game gets reset.

I'd put Motorstorm freezing in the kiosks down to a software error. I'd put this rep's speech down to some kid with a vivid imagination.

Don't believe everything you read on the neeeeeet.

I've had my PS3 freeze on me about twice and it was a obvious software lockup, not overheating.

The spooky bug is where the hdmi hdcp suddenly gets out of sync and the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds! Happened about twice too.

Be aware I play PS3 a *lot*

Well, I would say the part in the story where the guy says "Oh, I know all about it," I said, trying not to laugh. "I have the future at home. In my closet. Still in the box. Trying to sell it. No takers." kinda says it all....he obviously has his own agenda and bias.

Bottom line - Sony or any console maker would never intentially do something like this...please, lets all use a little common sense here.

I'm pretty sure it's just a software bug in the motorstorm demo he is talking about. Something like, "it can't auto-exit from timeout error when in the vehicle loading screen". So, employees, knowing this, can lock up an annoying demo and system by leaving it in a certain screen to trip the bug.

Think of it like this: Imagine you work retail, and a new game comes out with annoying background music (think theme from Rocky). It turns on and plays about every 5 minutes, literally. you can't really change out the demo, because of rules, and you can't turn it off, again, rules. So what are you to do? Well, there is a trick to lock up the system so it is stuck forever in a loading screen, so you do it, and hooray! No more annoying background noise.
