View Full Version : I used to hate 'Doom 3' but now...Well, a very late 'review' inside.

First of all, it should not be compared to HL2 in any way.

HL2 is going for a movie-like action feel while Doom is going for a closed environment psychotically damaging feel.

I give them both 9/10.

Hl2 is just...Well, it's HL2. It has it's own genre by now and it's a superb game both technically and gameplay wise.

Doom 3 I was very sceptical about. Plastic looking, not enough variety etc but it manages to pull through pretty well.
I LOVE being scared and Doom 3 delivers that with perfection.
It's a game where the monster jumps at me, I get scared and think "haha, you little fuck" and then load 12 shells into him. It's satisfying in that way.

HL2 is..let's say; 'more intelligent'. You can set clever traps and it awards quit wit.
Doom delivers satisfaction through adrenaline and HL2 delivers satisfaction through planning and the clever use of wit.

I know I am a bit late but both these games are a must buy and as a person who always though "pfft, who the hell would like Doom 3?" I am very very pleasantly surprised.

If you haven't got them already, get them both.

Do you guys think 'Quake 4' will be my cup of tea? That game sure 'died out' quick. :/

Doom 3 becomes alot of fun when you have a video card that can properly handle it . I would say the 7800s and x1900s is what you really want to play through the game

I don't like Doom 3, after an hour or so it gets boring and repetitive, the environment is constantly dark and there is not much added to the genre that has already been done, Quake 4 is even worse, it is basically just Doom 3 with a new skin.

Very poor.

HL2 on the other hand was nothing short of a great experience.

I suggest playing through the expansion Resurrection Of Evil. Quake 4, I dont know how to describe it. It didnt keep me entertained long.

Everybody else hates Doom 3, but I liked it. Then again, I avoided the genre for years before picking up Doom 3, so....

The best I can do is HIGH. Not HIGHEST :( I could do HIGHEST on HL2. Shows the technical achievement.

Yeah, the repetitiveness of Doom 3 is just starting to hit me now (i made my first post too early) but I am just playing it for the scare which is why I liked the game so much in the first place.

Yeah, HL2 was just....They need to invent a new word.

Half Life 2 = Awesomeness.

Not awesome; WOWSOME!

Too bad about Quake 4 :( Quake Wars sounds great though. If you have the rig to handle it.

Now I am going to grow my balls and play Doom 3 in the dark with my headphones on full volume......*gulp*

yea , the x1900 handles it really well on my pc .

For the next crop of pc games i'm going to rebuild .

quad core cpu (which ever company has the best one out at the time) a r600 class gpu , my x1900xt for physics (if ati implements it ) a x fi sound card and 4 gigs of ram.

Should be fast enough to handle the games that come out at least in a way i'd want to play them. Then i'd prob have to upgrade again in 2008 for the best performance on those 2007 games

Nah, by that time I will just update to an Apple Macbook pro and dual boot with Linux and leave gaming to my Sony Playstation 3 :)

that sucks man . Some of those titles aren't announced for the ps3 yet , your going to miss out .

ALso by that time the pc graphics will have passed up the ps3 and xbox 360

No it doesn't suck, the ps3 will have enough titles to keep me coming back for more, and that is not to say that i won't set up another Linux/windows/freebsd triple boot machine with a nice quad/octa core and an r700 or 9800GTX (whatever they will be called when the time comes for me to upgrade) and potentially 4-6GB RAM. And then maybe an Apache Linux/freebsd file/web server later on down the track.

I won't be missing out anything.

Yes, I know that (they already kind of have), but gameplay is more important to me then graphics. I won't desert my PC gaming anytime.

I liked Doom3 too. I've played a lot of shooters on the PC over the years, but Doom3 had to be the most engrossing and environmental game I've ever played. I say environmental because the environment was totally key to the gameply and to my enjoyment. Few other games really give you the feeling that you are there and that you yourself (not your character) are on the verge of death at all times. With the sound up and the lights off, there are few things better than doom3.
