View Full Version : Blu-ray movies to include portable files?

In a strange, un-Sony like move, Sony's David Bishop announced that future Blu-Ray movies from Sony Pictures Entertainment will include portable files that can be transferred to laptops and other portables (such as the PSP?). This feature may launch this year, which would be a fantastic deal for current PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP owners. Imagine copying a movie from your PS3's Blu-Ray reader directly onto the PSP via USB connection. That would be an incredible bonus. Let's see it happen, Sony.

Nights Notes: Good move! This will encourage PSP owners to buy Blu-Ray discs! This will also encourage Blu-Ray and PS3 owners to play movies on the go with the PSP. It's a win, win situation for Sony!

Yea killer news. If this happens though, I Think UMD movies would become totally DEAD. They are already slim pickins now. This would be great though as long as they can give us some options, like subtitles and language on the current umd's. I just don't see how they could compress a full 1080P movie on BD down to a managable size for memory cards( 400 - 800 megs ?) and it still look as good. Doing that on my computer now takes awhile, but that should be alot faster to copy and transfer to memory card- half the work would be done!:)
better be able to save them in a folder on PS3 though cause it would bite if it wasn't as convient as just copy and GO.

Good news!
Hopefully we'll nit only see entire movies(along with trailers), but game demos as well.
There has already been discussion about putting Game Demos in movies now.
(like bundling Superman Returns the game[demo] with Superman Returns the movie)
We will probably also see some Music Videos and Interviews/Commentary to be transferable as well(hopefully)

um... gamesrgood, did it ever occur to you that every single movie ever released on PSP was encoded from a higher than 1080p resolution source? By the time the movie makes it onto the UMD, it's resolution has been reduced to the exact resolution of PSP's screen, and then the compression coded is employed to further reduce the file size of the video so it fits easily on a UMD. Then they just include that compressed file on the BD disc alongside the full 1080p video file.

hey frosty,
I knew that umd's were already taken from better sources and compressed.I should of made my statement more straight forward. When you compress video don't you lose quality? Umd's have good quality but aren't they capable of holding 2.5 Gigs ? I'm just hoping that if it's true the quality is gonna be there. It would be great for Sony to offer this but the file sizes need to be smaller than UMD. I don't believe your average PSP user has a 2 Gig memory stick.
Maybe they could offer different file sizes to fit common size memory sticks, 400 mb(512 stick) 800mb(1G). got to have space for game saves :)

Yes...but VERY soon, 2GB memory sticks are gonna be the SAME price as a UMD movie($20-$30)

gamesrgood its 900 MB on a single layer UMD, 1.8 GB on a dual layer UMD disc

I may have to pick up a PSP in the future. I wasn't really interested in it but with all the features it's going to have with the PS3, it may be too good to pass up.

thanks LeeDog -
Now that i see a dual layer is 1.8GB my idea is tottaly possible.
Hope it happens.
And memory sticks are getting alot cheaper

They could just adopt Divx or what-not and then one wouldn't even need to pick up a larger memory stick. The PSP can be pretty open so you don't need to worry about this feature entering the mainstream. :)

there is also potential for updating games with new levels, weapons, skins etc... GoW the movie could have game related content of this kind

what better way to promote and sell memory sticks... you could have an advert for them on the blu-ray disk. there are 8gb memory sticks out there now, that will drive down the costs of 2gb memory sticks ;)

This seems like it could be a huge boon for piracy. And I such I hope for the studios sake that there are some good anti-piracy measures somewhere.

Well if its true, lets hope the included movies will be in PSP native resolution.
Sony really should release the firmware that allowed movies played back in native psp resolution from the memorystick.

No way! That RULES!! I hope it comes to be true. It would defiantly put a huge smack down on HD DVD. Props to Sony if it really happens....
