US retailer suggests THQ and Volition's GTA wannabe is on the way to the PS3 soon...
Author: Chris Leyton | Date Added: 12/01/2007
The appearance of a PlayStation3 version of THQ's Saint's Row on the EB Games website will hardly come as a revelation, given the multi-format stance typically employed by the third-party publisher.
No further details were offered about the port, though surely there will have to be something extra to tempt PS3 owners months after the release of the Xbox 360 version.

It's pretty much a fact that this won't even come close to the caliber that the next GTA game will be. This is just a super clean and sharp version of GTA VCS, and.. you can make your own character. Wow, big whoop.
It's not even a poor man's GTA because it was sold at normal retail price. It's a suckers GTA, and no one wants to suck right? lol.
GTA will piss on this game from such a height it will be simply stupid.

Oh yay another crappy port of an Xbox 360 game.
I like volition but they are not talented enough to pull off a port of any of their games that will surpass the original. If they can't make the PS3 version significantly better then IMO don't bother.
I won't buy it

Lol stop complaining people...this is NOT bad news. I love GTA too but if Saints was formally a PS3 exclusive going to x-box instead of hearing "GTA is a much better game...big deal", we'd be hearing "how many more exclusives can PS3 loose?" and "Sony is making huge mistakes by loosing these exclusives" lol. Not to mention I never played it but i've heard its a good game. Regardless of if the next-gen GTA will be much better or not.

Honestly, I just have something against this game. That's seriously how I feel. They simply took GTA and copied it, it's as simple as that. It doesn't deserve to be measured on it's own merits where it takes 99% of it's design from only one other game.
And secondly, stop counting exclusives lost for X system, that's just dumb. That's being as dumb as any other fanboy. Ya ok, the 360 lost an exclusive, it's not something you need to party over though, jeez. It's disappointing that I can actually see you two being 'happy' for the loss of an exclusive on one side moreso than the PS3 getting another game.

Was never Exclusive in the first place. And Im guessing none of ya's have played Saints Row, It freaking rocks, Gameplay is fun, Especially with the ragdoll physics, Taking over gang turfs has never been funner, Plenty of side missions to do, Way better than the side missions in any of the GTA's, A must buy if you ask me.

Yeah right about that, They have a nice celebration if the 360 loses an exclusive, But if the PS3 loses an exclusive they bring some excuse up...Honestly...Both sides of the war should just Enjoy their systems, If a console loses an Exclusive, Fine! both consoles can enjoy the same games with no freaking arguing.
gta was cool when it came out. then when gta 2 came out, we were impressed, seriously. Then it became 3d, gta3, and we all were like, the series deserves anouther play. then gta 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and so on. seriously how daft do you think we are to give a living daft about a anouther gta, or anouther imatation. it seems THQ challenges us yet by producing software no one actually wants.

That's the thing isn't it about GTA, in order to build a giant streaming world on a PS2 takes a lot of smart coding, on a 360 or PS3... Not so much smart coding, especially on a machine with mandatory hard drive.
So everybody is doing it.
To make Saint's Row:
Take GTA Vice City
Remove 90% of the humor, cool missions, cool radio stations, licensed music, good control, and general rock* magic.
Add detailed graphics.
Add Physics
Add mediocre multiplayer
And that's Saint's Row. I'm not crazy about it, but it's a good time filler.
I think you're much better off playing Bully on PS2. Not lacking in the Rock* magic.

Exactly Applefiend. It's almost a guarantee that GTA will be a whole generation ahead of Saints Row when it comes out basically. Saints Row copied a last gen game, and didn't even do a good job of that.
That's why I am saying GTA will be so beyond Saints Row. Saints Row might be a half decent game, but other than in graphics, physics and the stuff Applefiend just mentioned, it's very much a last gen title.
That's a definite +rep for you Apple lol.

I share the exact same view(/vendetta ;))
They took the biggest selling PS2 game and tried to copy it for the xbox 360. In the end it had less features than GTA and lacked GTA's humour and style which is what made those games so fun.
I have nothing against GTA wannabe's, but Saint's Row is so similar I'm surprised Rockstar didn't sue them.

this is good news but it is laughable next to GTA. Rockstar is planning something big with GTA4, something huge, i have been following them a lot, they said they have already scrapped their original ideas in place for something bigger.
GTA pwns all over this crap and Rockstar knows it. Rockstar invented this genre and still to this very day nobody has come close to doing what they do, GTA is a perfect mix and has been wildly successful.
It has also been confirmed that GTA4 will be based of RAGE (Rockstar advanced graphics engine) IE; their table tennis engine ;)

Well those users who were caught up in the "doom and gloom for the ps3" picture should work for Microsoft because they clearly can't see past a week, if not a day.
And to me none of these X360 to PS3 titles are good because these titles were never good to begin with.
I didn't like them when they were on the X360 and I still don't like them when they are on the PS3 unless in this game's case, it meets the conditions my last post said.
It's interesting how my most looked forward to games are published by Sony. No wonder why I am buying a PS3.

Same here man. Totally how I feel.
Also, I agree with Wounding. I know I'm not gonna be purchasing this game, I gave my reasons, they are the exact same as VG's, but every game pulls it's weight you know? So at least it's positive for the PS3 in that sense.
Nice to hear it did good in Europe, that's a strong plus for an acquisition of a game.
But again, no way in hell am I buying this when there's so much better stuff just around the corner. Personal preference, and I am very much a connoisseur.
EDIT: @Grovestreet - Do you want to make something personal? I didn't mean to offend you though, I apologize, I'm sure Saints Row, when comparing to nothing else, is a pretty good game. But again, my personal preference is to have the cream of the crop, and I still think that GTA will be a league beyond Saints Row, no matter how good that game is. And I'm damn sure a lot of people agree with me when almost every review calls Saints Row something short of GTA.
Don't throw half thought out doncha rhetoric at me, that kind of stuff really sparks my nerve.

Meh...
Good for Sony and getting a bigger fanbase...but I haven't touched a GTA since Vice City, and I won't touch this game with a 10 in. poll. Not even a rental. It's a game, and its made to be fun. But there's nothing funny/entertaining/comical about gangs/violence/bad neighborhoods.
I know, I sound like the guy who wants to end videogames, but it's seriously not entertaining at all for me. There is some substance behind all the cursing and foul language, but I could never get passed the initial phase.
I'll take an Epic adventure over Sandbox any day of the week. It' just seems like more thought and imagination goes into those types of games...
curryking1
01-14-2007, 01:28 AM
I don't know about more thought, but it's more like the thoughts go to different strengths.
The adventure games you talk about, the 'thought' there goes into an epic story or character driven plots for underlying meaning.
The 'thought' in GTA goes into the silly humour and the satire and parodies of the American way of life.
I'm sure it takes just as much thinking to create an interesting story as it is to make such comedy out of taking American values to the extreme. And that's not all that GTA does (the story is pretty basic in SA, but entertaining, and Vice City's story was really exciting to see unfold), but a lot of the creative work stems from extreme left winged, right winged politics or extreme hillybillies and other stereotypes taken to the extreme.
I mean come on, how many hrs of hilarity is on the radio in SA on those talkshows? Inbetween the songs for radio stations, they even made a fictional group Love Fist and songs and an album for them. There is certainly a lot of creativity in GTA. Vice City I would say captured the 80s atmosphere unbelievably well, and the radio stations were a BIG part of that, as well as the Scarface-take-over-Miami vibe. And for SA, it's story about police abusing black Americans, and at the same time, during a early 90s timeline, they tailored a good story about corruption in police and gangbanging which was and still is very active in the US. They have to base it off of something realistic, I mean the setting is in the 90s. For a fantasy title you can go wild, but when you are putting yourself in historic times, you have to play by some rules with the story.
It's just the effort is directed to a different strength you know?
And I think everyone knows what I'll say Saint's Row doesn't have... so I'll stop there.

i still play all the gta games to this very day, i can hardly go a weeks without firing up VC or SA to give it another whirl.
I don't have a favourite, tied between SA and VC, VC had a better vibe and storyline and was just hilarious, SA was too but it didn't have the vibe VC had, but it was a technical masterpiece and had a huge map.
GTA3 was good to but not quite as good. But it was revolutionary.

Totally true say. I also only stopped playing GTA SA just recently. I'd constantly keep giving it whirls. Somehow playing FF XII has made SA very boring for me. I have no idea how that works.
Aye there man, VC was awesome. Atmosphere, style, all of that stuff was just perfect. SA didn't match it in those regards, but it got the control down better, especially with the right analog stick camera and manual aiming, and also ya, technically a masterpiece.

This just proves that fanboyism and childishness go hand in hand. Instead of being greatful for the games that are coming out for the PS3, we see lots of people laughing at "1 less exclusive for xbots rofl!!1111".
Seriously, gamings about having fun, and if you are having more fun wanting other systems to lose exclusives... well you really are sad indeed.

Sorry, I have a bad habit of saying "everyone". If you see it in the future, I usually don't mean it literally. Apologies.

I'm curious about one thing. The developers said before the 360 game launched that they could not include aircraft in the game because they were unable to stream the data off of the disc to load textures and geometry fast enough to support flying. They said because there was no standard HDD, it wasn't possible. Now with the PS3, that is no longer the case.

I wonder why these kind of posts are never made when it is the PS3 losing an "exclusive" to the 360.
Defense Much?
And as for the GTA vs SR it boils down to a little something like this.
SR basically improved on what was supposed to be improved when you go from one generation to the next. It was a decent "play through and forget about it" game. Saints Row does nothing to elevate it above the GTA clone status. While Saints Row does some things well like a well thought out map system and the "First Gen" Next gen goodies, it fails when it comes to delivering a seamless experience. Things such as the Respect system especially slow down gameplay making advancing to the next mission a chore by having to do mindless tasks to fill your respect meter.

@Kabbage - It might have to do with the fact there's not enough 'xbots' in this section to warrant anyone saying something to them when the PS3 loses an exclusive. But in the end, who the hell cares, the fanboys from all sides can all go ***k themselves and leave the game talking to the rest of us.
And trust me Kabbage, there's no need to get defensive for the Sony side either, however little it was. Almost all the posters on this board are sane, ShadowVoa seems to be one of them. I'm sure he, just as much as you, supports people not being assholes to promote X, Y, or Z system.
If I see people ripping on Sony for losing exclusives on this board and acting in the same manner, I'll guarantee you I'll rip the crap out of them.

Like it or not Kabbage its your choice, but do not mistake me for some fanboy. I appreciate this generation as much as any gamer, I grew up Sony the same as you, and I own a PS3. But then as Seph stated, I own the other two consoles as well.
Curry nailed it with his promote X, Y, or Z system. I like to game, nothing more or less. I dont care what system it is on, if the game I want is there, then I'll play it. I just dont understand why the Sony fans have to act like the Xbots, and the same vice versa. Its never ending, its no longer about the games for some people, they take this news as personal and then defend the system they feel the most attached too.
Evil Taru says this more then I do, just play the games and stop worrying what others are saying! PS3 is doomed... means nothing. You let the FUD get in your head and this is the result, seriously if the news surrounding the PS3 is so bad, just dont read it.
I'm a bit late in this thread, but I'd like to say I don't see this as a great acquisition for Sony. I downloaded the Demo for the 360 and all in all, I found it to be a rather embarrassing game with nothing but swear words thrown in at every opportunity (Beating the shit out of Women at the start didn't really appeal to me either). Cringe worthy. Not only that, but it's clearly a rip-off of the GTA series, it's rather uncanny.

Damn guys. Why the hate for this game? I own this game on 360 and I'm having a total blast with it. I hope you guys give this game a chance cause I was once a hater but playing the actual game changed my mind. I hope PS3 gamers give this game a chance cause it would suck not to get a sequel on PS3 cause the first sold poorly. Sure its not original, but it is fun as heck and thats all that should matter to gamers.
Another thing that gets to me is hearing the GTA fans whine like little girls. I mean if you enjoy GTA and sandbox games, then SR should be right up your alley.

I'm not so sure about that, but if they were to do this I would probably be a bit disgusted by their direction. Think about it: you pay $60 for a premature title just to be charged for the extras available at no additional cost on another platform.

Well... I'll be completely honest. Last gen I was ready to pick up every GTA title after I played GTA III. I don't have GTA III but I bought GTA VC and SA right when they were released.
There are a lot of things to like about the games, I could name so many hilarious conversations or in-jokes, the radio editing that lets you listen to the best parts of so many songs, simply how big the world is and the driving model is incredibly fun, I end up driving around for 30 min at a time thinking about nothing else but going literally anywhere, I just have fun driving.
However, I will accept the fact that this game sells on 2 things, it's in a big city, and you can blow shit up. If it was missing either or, it wouldn't be as popular regardless what other features were added or dropped.
Finally, the reason I am going to get GTA IV... if you look and peer into the things that GTA SA brought to the table last gen and then see how much more opportunity there is too improve upon so many means of interactivity and how many more interactive things you can have in next gen... well ya, that's what is making me buy it. GTA SA's interactivity was HUGE for last gen, and it was a HUGE game.
Knocking down small trees in forests, going to clubs for minigame dancing just for kicks, buying soda pop/snacks to regen health from outdoor machines or in buildings (like 24/7 stores), buying hots dogs from hot dog stands, go to fast food chains , jumping off buildings and from planes with parachutes, cutting a car door off with a chainsaw, fire spreading when there is fire made, going swimming in the ocean (hahaha), minigame delivery missions, ambulance missions, vigilante police missions, other side missions like time trials for distances or in small areas with interesting environments (eg one was in a half pipe esque thing with a motorcycle), doing destruction derbies, climbing a mountain, literally which takes like 3 or 4 min with a fast dirtbike, go do races whenever you want, steal a freight train, climb on top of houses (best addition to the gameplay btw, being able to climb stuff, jump high fences the same way, etc.), cool weather effects like the fog (looked cool, but unrealistic lol, it was all grey but there were puffs of 'fog' lol, but it looked good graphically), rpg elements where you 'level up' your ability with weapons, you can eat to get health back, you can even get fat, you can work out and get buff but slower, learn new melee moves, put nitro on your car, special paintjobs, put hydraulics on various cars like limos and go to 'bouncing' parties as a minigame, they even had 2 player and you could just go around the world and fight enemies like gangs and police together!!! make a chain of tow trucks, tow other cars, put cars onto a truck and bring them places (although this feature was glitchy) lots of crap to do.
And some of the missions are hella fun too, lots of action packed stuff, racing cars, they made the shooting much better and it was a lot more intuitive fighting against enemy gangs or the police if need be, fun weapons too
I love to imagine the possibilities that GTA IV has in store, it's just wild to think about.
But again, the game does sell on it's city setting and violent nature. Many people just have fun going around and punching people and yes, there are people who just have that mindless 'fun' of killing everything. It's a perfectly valid criticism of the game simply because the game gives you the avenue to do it. Without it the game would feel very constrained and awkward, but that's not to say that I fancy doing it. There's something about having the option to do it make the game feel a lot more open, so I have a very weird opinion on the issue. I don't personally take fun in just killing everyone though, I find it stupid. I actually try not to kill people, when I'm driving I always try to avoid running down people lol. Killing senselessly is not a me thing, but for some odd reason I appreciate that it's there just 'to be able to do it but not actually do it' kind of way. It's really hard to explain.
Just to be clear though, I'm not defending the game letting you be able to do that.
Also, the reason I haven't gotten into the other GTA-esque games is because they only have the violence. They have none of the scale, interactivity (like I listed above), music, and a rough story to keep you entertained and continue, and simply overall appeal that GTA has. The only other GTA style game worth playing is Mafia, but if you actually play it, it's not really a GTA-esque game, it just has a big city which is really awesome and a very, very amazingly well done linear path. Every game that has tried to emulate GTA to try and be the same as GTA has failed miserably because it's missing a lot of the additional qualities that GTA has. Crackdown will sell 3 million max. I highly doubt much more.

Great post Curry;) I won't deny GTA as a great game-because it surely is. I think I almost beat GTA3 and got pretty far in VC. After playing those games however, I cannot agree with you more that the other titles are just lacking the full-GTA experience. I'm judging Crackdown on a demo admittedly, but it just doesn't "feel" like it's adding a great deal more than what GTA already accomplished. And there's no denying Rockstar's charm that is apparent in every game. These titles should never hit the million mark darnit! Lair, Alan Wake, Heavenly Sword, Flow, Viva Pinata, Wario Ware, Smash Brothers, Warhwawk, man...why aren't people buying the REAL games:huh: There's so many awesome experiences on PS2 that many people wouldn't even look twice at because there isn't a gun or sword on the cover.
Hmm...maybe my disapproval isn't at the game developers so to speak-but the western audience for embracing such garbage and pushing MS to continue to push towards games that appeal to the demographic. Just Sucks...
but I guess this is why we have Sony and Nintendo:)

Well, GTA does get all that media exposure simply from being GTA and being 'controversial.' I mean how much more exposure can you give to a videogame? GTA is almost as well known as Mario but for so very different reasons. I mean violent and well known? You can't get better market exposure than that basically unless you added a heap of sex or The Da Vinci Code on top.
Hopefully we can depend on more people getting into videogames and more people seeing there are more games than GTA on the three biggie platforms.
And besides, there's always Gran Turismo 5 to kick GTA in the nuts in terms of sales ;) Gran Turismo is both the PS3 saviour as well as my saviour for restoring my faith in... people hahaha.
