So psp is doing good in japan eh? My hastings store just shrunk the psp section due to poor sales so I think its not doing so well here in the US.

But in saying that they have been the only PSP titles in the top 10 sales charts for Japan in the last month or so. Infact I think MGS was pushed to 15 last week with the top 14 or so being Nintendo only. There's been more titles around the 20-50 mark though. Although its still not that great compared to the DS and PS2 sales.
I'm plesantly suprised at MGS.

PSP isn't exactly the most popular platform in Japan, and Kojima Productions wasn't expecting to make a profit on the development costs for the game. That's why it's such a surprise, and should ensure there won't be a PS2 port.
Interstingly, each Metal Gear Solid game has sold less copies than the previous one. Which is a shame, because I loved Snake Eater.

MGS never sold that great which is really annoying because it is both an emotional and a game play benchmark for gaming that everyone should experience.
I will give up every game on both PS1 and PS2 for one MGS.
It's no surprise these titles sell as they are the only games that will spark enough interest in the hand-held marketplace to get sales.
Sony seems a bit fucked with the PSP and I think they now see it more as a multimedia device that is PS3s little brother rather than a console of it's own.

There aren't up to date figures for MGS3 and Subsistence. The last time I heard of sales figures they were nearly 4 million and that was well before Subsistence was released.

When did they exactly say that???
On a recent Kojima Productions podcast, Ryan Payton stated Hideo Kojima chose to Abbreviate Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops as "MPO", because it sounded like "NPO", or non-profit organization. After the two Ac!d games, KP was afraid they'd ostracized Metal Gear fans on PSP, and weren't optimistic about sales.
In North America, according to NPD, MPO only sold around 120,000 units, so it's doing much better in Japan where ironically the PSP is less popular.
Just for contextual comparison, Castlevania: PoR which had a much smaller budget than MPO and appeals to more niche market, sold 150,000 units in North America (NPD figures) and was released on the same day as MPO.

Yes, it's true that they liked that MPO sounded like NPO (because of the ties with Philanthropy (MGS2) and so), but there isn't anything else to it. Note that you said they didn't expect to make a profit. So, they released a game they didn't expect to be profitable??? That doesn't make sense at all.

So, they released a game they didn't expect to be profitable???To be honest, this happens more often than you might think. This usually is relegated to launch titles though.
What happens is they'll use a game to create a fan base first and make there money back on the sequel or other methods. Given that MGS series already has a fan base, I'm not sure they'd have not expected to make a profit on this one.

I just mean dementia misinterpreted the whole MPO/NPO thing.
