I'd like to use Linux, but I don't have a spare 2.5 HD around. When I get one or when my 20GB fills up, I'll venture into Linux. Hopefully by then (6 months or so) we'll have RSX support or at least something unofficial...

Mate, if you are interested in Linux but don't want to lose your windows stuff don't worry, if you PM me i will show you an easy way to set up Linux in a "dual boot" with windows, making it possible to have a pretty little menu that allows you to select which os you want at startup, you will not lose any windows data at all.
That goes for everyone!
EDIT: just realised you were talking about ps3, not pc, but you can follow xbd's guide to install Linux on your ps3 as well.

I don't use it yet. So my vote obviously was the last choice on the poll.
Although, you bet installing linux will be one the first things I do with my PS3 besides securing a PSN username, games n movie viewing.

I'm really looking forward to using Linux on PS3. I've tried a number of distros on my PC and I haven't decided yet which one to settle for. YDL looks like a winner to me, as it will be a distro that is somehow optimised for the system it's going to run on. It will also allow me to learn more about Linux since the job I'm starting next week will require using it from time to time and the more I know the better, even though I have some basic Linux knowledge already.
There's even a chance that my PS3 becomes my main PC as I really don't need my Windows PC for daily tasks.

how about a nice dual boot vg? *runs*Actually, I never liked messing with HDD partitions as I've always feared committing some stupid mistake or suffering some partition software failure and lose a lot of data. I've seen too many people messing up and despite all of the research I've done regarding partitions and dual booting, I won't be trying that with my own PC anytime soon at the risk of losing important data.
As a matter of fact, when I built my PC two years ago, I bought two hard drives with the sole purpose of installing a different OS on each one, in order to not having to rely on dual boot. I ended up experimenting a bit on one of them and right now I'm not going to try anything again until I find the Linux distro I'm really looking for. Right now, I only use the secondary HDD for backups and even for installing some applications to prevent further fragmenting on the main OS HDD. I'm not doing a RAID since they're different sizes, even though I'm aware that doesn't necessarily prevent me from doing some RAID activities.

My PS3 will be here within a week :)
I do plan on giving Linux a go, but was just curious what exactly will I be able to do in Linux on my PS3 that I can't do with my XP PC?
I know people will say Linux is better than Windows (and I don't doubt that it is), but I'm not going to be getting rid of my PC so what advantage will installing Linux give me?
Basically should I wait until applications start to utilize the PS3 a bit better or is there already some really cool stuff I can do?
Is it possible to download 1080P video and play it with the PS3?
My PC can struggle sometimes with 1080P video and if the PS3 can do it easily that would probably convince me to install linux.
Any other cool stuff it can do?
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, I haven't voted yet but I'm interested in using Linux I just wonder whether I'd gain anything by doing so.

Note: the only setback to using PS3 over a PC is memory availability.
Mainly surfing the internet, playing poker and downloading videos (It's the only way I can see 24 :)) I have my PC connected to my new 42" 1080P TV and that is where my PS3 will also live. If Linux on the PS3 was pretty good at things like Video editing/decoding then that would be another thing I'd be interested in as my PC is quite slow at that.
I think I'll probably give it a go anyway. It's the sort of thing I'd like to learn to use just for the sake of it and I'm sure I'll find something it does that is really useful.
Coded-Dude
01-16-2007, 10:21 PM
PS3 Linux will do MOST of that with ease.
You will hit a few roadblocks with video support.
I.E. - No codecs, Video format not supported, or not yet working on CELL Linux
(you'd need quite a bit of memory to do intensive video editing)

come on vg! if you want to give linux a shot i can assure you i can show you how to dual boot with no chance of corruption or parttion table corruption. But i won't preasure you. :)
Another thing is, if you are interested in using Linux on the ps3, you might find it easier learning it on the pc and then migrating to the ps3.

^U bet man! Linux is quite awesome...I'm in love with Ubuntu...and don't plan on going back to windows....uh...ever...
I don't have a PS3 yet, but I do plan on putting Ubuntu or Kubuntu on there once I get it...Then again... I might just use the standard OS and simply have my PS3 as my media hub....Either way...I will definitely try out Linux on PS3 when I get one. And I will probably always use Linux on my regular PC.
Can't wait till the get a standard Distro fellas!! Can you imagine having 3D desktop...applets...squiggily tabs...and all the good stuff right on an Easy simple set up DVD=-o

It's really looking like Linux users outnumber windows users around here! That's great news! I'm going to take the data from this poll and make some more polls around the forums, and use all the collective data to make an e-mpire linux penetration chart. These are the stats I'm looking to gather...
How many total use linux
How many use it on PC
How many use it on PS3
How many started using it with PS3
How many already used it for PS3.
And just for reference...
How many use windows
How many are considering switching from windows or other OS.
How many use another operating system (OSX, etc.)

Well now wait a minute, what this poll measures is who uses Linux in any shape or form; and in that sense, the majority of respondents *do* use Linux. But we didn't have any Windows option, y'know? :)
I would *think* that Windows use still outmeasures Linux use here, even among these respondents.

I know he does on his PS3. And I'm not interested yet in how many also use windows, just in how many use Linux. I'll do a windows vs. linux poll later. Of course people will stick with their windows boxes for now, but if linux awareness is as present as this poll suggests, it won't be long before linux becomes well supported enough to overthrow windows.

I thought I would post this here as many users seem to be confused about Linux support on the PS3.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Sony-PlayStation-3-support-in-Linux-Kernel-41985.shtml
Sony has added new patches into the stable 2.6.20 Linux kernel tree, which furthermore, adds machine-specific features for the new PlayStation 3 gaming console.
The patches should greatly simplify the maintenance of the Linux kernels for the PlayStation 3, which is already supported by Yellow Dog Linux, thanks to a development deal between Sony and TerraSoft, and a special version of Fedora Core 5.
Starting with the 2.6.13 release, the Linux kernel has gained generic support for the Cell processor, on which the PlayStation 3 gaming console is based, but the new patches add machine-specific support for technology such as the PlayStation 3's memory architecture, DMA (direct memory access) model, and SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) model. The code for the patches has been written by Sony.
The newly added kernel patches will make supporting the PlayStation 3 under Linux much simpler, because when creating kernels for the machine, there will be no need to apply external patches, which can complicate the kernel build process, or even lead to conflicts, if there are more than one set of patches applied to the kernel.
I hope that clears up a few things :)

That sounds interesting, YIM! What implications could that bring? :)
Garfunkel
01-18-2007, 12:27 PM
basically, almost ANY PPC distro will work out of the box with the ps3. it will take a while to become mainstream but some distros are going to use the 2.6.20 kernel very soon, including ubuntu feisty.
EDIT: if you can't find a distro you like VG, you might like ubuntu ;)

It looks almost the same. Just run a Google image search for Ubuntu, you'll find plenty of screenshots.
Anyway, here's (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download#currentrelease) the download page for the newest version of Ubuntu. Just choose the server closest to you, burn the ISO to a CD, and reboot your PC with the Ubuntu disc in your CD-drive.

BTW: VG, I had a look for solutions to your kb/m support in Ubuntu and all the solutions i came across needed a kb/m to edit a file or two, if you wanted to give it a go you might have to use a standard usb/ps2 kb/m to set it up before switching to the BT kb/m.
