View Full Version : Picking a new console

I need the help of whoever is willing to give it. I own a Wii, and I'd like a 360 OR a PS3, but not both.
Right now, I'm leaning towards 360 for one main reason: Guitar Hero. I own both on PS2, and two guitars, but I'm thinking of trading in my PS2 (and all games etc.) for a 360.
Guitar Hero II looks so much more appealing on 360 because of the downloadable content, but it'll be $90 for a game I already have.
Normally I'd say screw it, it's not worth it...but the PS2 guitars won't work on PS3 either, so at this point it doesn't make a difference (which is something I'm pretty pissed about I might add).
That's my main deciding factor as of this moment, but that could change in time. Right now the only other game that I would really care about missing for PS3 is Kingdom Hearts 3.
On the other hand, I can't think of any 360 games I'd be really upset about missing either.
Maybe I should just stick with my Wii.
This is a major decision, involving 4 to 6 hundred dollars, plus tax, and I want to make sure I make the correct choice. What are some of your opinions? Please try to be as unbiased as possible ;)
Thanks in advance for any advice you leave.
Oh yeah, should mention this too: right now at Game Stop, if I trade in my PS2, memory card, and extra controller, I get $100 off of a PS3. Maybe that makes it worth it?
There's a lot to consider here.

GET a 360. I got one for Xmas and I am a hardcore Sony fan so that says something. The 360 has 250+ games already and has good support from MS and they've worked out all their bugs. There is a SHIT LOAD of stuff on XBL Marketplace and there is at least a lil bit of downloadable content for almost every major game. Get the premium version for $400 though because it comes with the hard drive, headset, wireless controller, HD AV cables, all the goods. You should also spend $20 on the play & charge kit which is a rechargable battery for the controller. If you need any help on games just ask. I say pick up Gears of War. The PS3 is pretty buggy there is VERY little support and games atm. It's not EVEN wroth $600 even at $100 off. I'm personally waiting till it hits $400.

The PS3 just got out the door, so on the one hand a person could argue that it could turn out being a gotta-have system eventually, but on the other hand it doesn't have much to offer at the moment. I already own a 360, and have since it launched back in 2005, but if I was in the market for one or the other, I'd personally go with the 360 because it's less expensive and it already has an established game library including old, used titles that can be picked up really cheap. Whatever performance difference there is between it and the PS3 means jack squat to me, and I don't care about next-gen disc formats, HD-DVD or Blu-ray either one right now.

I would say the 360 just because I own one and am having an amazing experience with it. The controller is awesome for one, and the online gaming is so dominent on the other. And yeah, it does cost less at this point which is a plus. Many must have games are available for the 360 and the lineup is just getting better and better. The 360
But, if you plan on getting a Blu-Ray player anytime soon then the PS3 could be the better bet.
The 360 is no doubt the better game machine atm.

the smartest thing to do would be to stick with the wii for 6 months then recalculate the situation for differences.

I would say buy NEITHER!..........for now.
Wait until Sony gets it's ass into gear and then decide.
If you really want to buy one now: well at the moment the PS3 sucks but in a few months you will most likely say "oh crap, i should have gotten a PS3!"
The main question is does Sony 1st party games like God Of War, GT5, Heavenly Sword, Eight Days (which is my most anticipated title), The Getaway, F1 etc interest you?
Does having tilt interest you?
Does all the bells and whistles (and there is A LOT on the PS3) scream out "good value" or "pointless crap"? and etc.
Since you seem to value your money, PS3 is without a doubt the most future proof just like all the PSs before it.
I personally see the PS3 as a better purchase as Sony always builds varied and a expensive games library and simply because I know with confidence that I won't have to buy anything but games for the PS3 and also it is comforting to think it will be with you for 10 years, slowly handing back the money you paid for it via good times.

I say sell the PS2 and Guitar Hero, buy a real guitar, become a rock star, make a million dollars, buy all three. :)
And you can buy a cheap adaptor for Guitar Hero guitars for PS3 soon I think. Can't remember where I read that. Also a new Guitar Hero is being made for PS3.
http://ps3.ign.com/objects/858/858010.html << No doubt, all new songs as we all have 1&2 on PS. There's downloadable content on PS3 too no doubt.
It's like this, what do you like?
Do you like....
Halo, Forza, Bioware RPGs,Fable, Team Ninja, Rare, Gears, etc. Is your most favourite genre shooters?
then buy a 360.
Do you like
Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Wipeout, Team Ico, Jak'n'Daxter,Metal Gear, Ratchet and high def movies?
Then buy a PS3.
Either 360 or PS3 is a good choice.
Have a look at the release lists on IGN for the next year for 360/PS3, pick the release list you like the most. Easy. Nobody knows what you like, what your taste is, you gotta decide for yourself.
http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html < PS3 release list
http://xbox360.ign.com/index/release.html < 360 release list
Pick the one you like best. And you don't need the 599 model, the 499 PS3 is just fine, and $100 difference? **** it, who cares. Pick what you like most, the difference is the price of 2 games.
As for Wii, gonna be a loooooong summer drought.

And don't buy a 360 right now anyway, there's rumours of one with hdmi(which you may not want now but you will a couple of years down the road), cheaper cpu(so maybe price cut) and larger HDD.
If it comes down the week after you buy your 360 you'll feel like a right tit. :)

Meh, there's a ps2/guitar control adapter coming out soon (for ps3, allowing you to play with dual shocks and guitar hero controllers), but I wouldn't pick a next gen console based on that one game. Seems a little weird to me. There aren't any other games you want to play, not even ones coming out this year? Really consider which games you're interested in playing. PS3 is in the post-launch dry spell until late february. So, I'd really consider what other games you're into aside from just guitar hero, you're talking a 400-500 dollar investment for one game.

IT all depends on what you want .
The ps3 is a new system and for this year at least it doesn't have many must have games. So i'd wait on that system , the price should only come down.
The 360 is a great buy. You can get the 360 and with a trade in of some of your ps2 titles it will come out to be cheap .
Also guitar hero 2 for the 360 will ahve downloadable content and the new controllers with the expansion ports on it .
The 360 will give you alot of great experiances this year with a ton of great software already out that can be had at bargin prices now .
I think gamestop is also doing 80$ added to teh 360 with certian trade ins

Until you find more than one game you really want for either system just stick with the Wii.

It sounds to me like neither system really appeals to you at this point in time. You seem like your just trying to find a new system to get some more games.
The problem with this line of thinking is, regardless of which system you choose, you will regret it later.
For now, wait. There is a lot of stuff that is still coming out for the PS2 (God of War II being the most obvious). Just hang on to it for a bit and you should be able to come to a more solid conclusion about which next gen console you want to invest in when those "must have" games start coming out.

Well, you guys are right, I don't really have to have a new system right now. The only thing is, the trade-in values of my games and PS2 will only go down over time, but I really don't want to go that long without my Guitar Hero :(
Heh, I guess I should just trade them all now and get over it, and wait it out.
I don't know...I don't really like shooters but Gears of War looks really cool. Plus 360 has Banjo.
On the other hand I love Kingdom Hearts and I know Sony usually gets great third party support in general.
Yeah, I suppose waiting is the best thing to do. Well I really appreciate everybody's input. Thanks a lot guys, I knew you'd help me make the right choice :)

It sounds to me you really like the PS line so you should wait until the end of the year until prices drop. The 360 should be $300 by next year the PS3 should be at least $500 next year and the Wii MAY BE $200 by next summer. I'm also talking about the premium bundles with all these. Just keep your PS2 for another year and wait and decide next year. I'm going to end up owning all 3 of them by the end of next year anyways :-D

I would say the best bet would be just to hang onto the PS2, still plenty of good games coming.

you could wait.
you cant go wrong with a 360 though, as long as you are willing to pay $50/year for live.

As of now, minus Halo 3, most of the very desirable titles are already out for the 360. The thing is, PS3's future this year is very fruitful, and I think '07 will be a better year for Sony than anyone else game-wise. 360's games (Blue Dragon, Gears, Lost Planet) are far superior to that of PS3's so far, but PS3 has only just launched.
They say first impressions are everything, and this is true with the PS3; lot's of waiting. Still, what you wait for is worth it.

Rid yourself of the PS2 unless your hanging on for any specific games. I gave mine away because the system has had its time and now there is nothing left that was coming out for this system which interested me (MGS, FF, RE, DQ, DMC, etc).
It really is all about shifting to this generation now, its always like this.

i STRONGLY disagree with that.
just get a 360. Xbox live! wont disappoint you. You arent really risking anything with it, unless you live, sleep, and eat MGS and Final Fantasy and cant live without playing them.

You don't "shift generations." You add to them. Just because a new generation of systems has come out, doesn't mean you should ditch the old ones. There are still many people here (myself included) still play SNES and NES games regularly.
Think of it this way. You don't throw away old photo albums just because you've turned another year older. They're full of memories you would one day like to revists. The same goes for old games. Just cause you won't be playing them this instant, doesn't mean you should get rid of them.

My personal opinion is to get 360 now, and if you crave PS3-style games, wait for the library to build so you get your money's worth (as in a sturdy library of games to play). Otherwise you'll just be waiting, waiting, waiting.

Well, like I said above, the only game I know I want to play on the PS3 as of right now is Kingdom Hearts 3. When that game comes out I HAVE to play through it somehow. But is one game worth $599.99? That's a lot of dough.
I may just stick with Wii for a very long time. I'm honestly starting to think that I won't even miss Guitar Hero very much once it's gone. I haven't played it in a while.
It saddens me, but with every passing day I become more and more a casual gamer. I wonder when the heck that started?
