As most are aware here, I own both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and I am writing to give my honest comparisons and impressions of these two fine systems from what I seen, played and experienced thus far. I'll be as fair and as accurate as possible so please no flaming on either end.
PS3 Vs Xbox 360
One thing we all, including myself have to keep in mind is the fact that PS3 has only been out for a couple of months. Xbox 360 wasn't too hot this time last year either to be quite honest, let's just be fair here! .
The Games:
Good way to start eh? The Game selection with 360 is growing and seems to be offering games that better suit my personal preference and style at the moment. Mass Effect and Blue Dragon are two examples. So far they interest me more then anything currently out or even coming to Playstation this year. Let's not even touch Bioshock, Halo 3 or Kane & Lynch.
I'm sorry but Flying Dragons, knights and big LoTR style battles feel dated and don’t interest me in the least. Panzer Dragoon didn't and Lair doesn't either. Ok, they look hot but who effin cares.
Games like Assassins Creed look very promising and would have given PS3 an edge in the competition but now 360 has it as well. GTA doesn't interest me much at all to be honest.
As I've stated in my impressions about the 360 before. The 360 feels like a breath of fresh air. Even looking at the J-Rpgs on 360 seems like a change. I don't really have an explanation for that, it's just weird. But I guess playing them on PS3 is what I've come to expect. Blue Dragon for some reason has me pretty excited. I guess its fair to start out with game selection anyway.
Live vs. PSN: Live is great and should be, considering it cost's $50 per year. But PSN is no slouch either.
They both offer:
- User Account/Alias/Picture (That is used for all online gaming.)
- Friends lists with Pictures (And let you know when friends log in)
- Instant Messaging/Blocking/Online Status
- Showing what games your friends are currently playing.
- Voice chatting.
- Online Stores (PS store/Xbox Marketplace)
Mini/Arcade style games to purchase via micro transactions. As well as game demos, Videos, movie trailers and such.
What Live offers and PSN Lacks:
- Voice Messaging (So Far)
- Gamer Points
- Gamercard Profile
- Comparison Charts
- Live Anywhere (No PSN equivalent)
- Easy access to Live using Hotmail account info.
- Rankings and star ratings (Popularity).
- Live works with Vista/Games (I think)
- Cost's $50 a year.
What PSN offers that Live Lacks:
Well...not much so far.but there are some things.
- PSN is free
- Notifies you when Friends log out
The Visuals: The Two Big Gunz
Gears Of War: Ok I'll give 360 the nod here. Nothing compares to Gears. But one thing that bugs me about Gears is the level size...I feel constricted. Your Character looks really good but I find the Locust don't seem to look as defined. I can hardly see their facial features. I find the Locust look almost identical to you and your men as well.... big and hulk like. I found myself thinking the Locust were one of my squad mates at times
Resistance: Is no slouch. Graphically inferior in mostly every way....but not entirely! The physics in resistance are insane. The Levels are a lot bigger and there are FAR more enemies on screen at once. The enemy character models are very distinguished and are very well defined graphically. They look more impressive then the the Locust in Gears (IMO). Facial features/body features and rag doll on the Chimera are a real treat. The Grunts are priceless when you piss them off or screw around with them.
Aside from the big two. PS3 is lacking anything to write home about. COD3 runs at 60fps on 360 but half that on PS3 But COD3 uses Sixaxis for Melee attacks and is still and damn fine game and looks stunning on my PS3. Mostly every other multiplat looks somewhat better (So Far) on 360 from what I can tell. But PS3 isn't far behind and considering it just came out. Thats a good feat. Good Job!
I have tried some solid titles such as Lost Planet, Kameo, Ghost Recon and RB6. All are fantastic...Mind you...
(Ghost Recon, was a good game but it had pathetic AI. The enemies were smarter then your squad mates. No matter how you directed your squad, they would stand out in the open and get shot constantly. Yet the Mexicans were freakin' sharpshooters as if they were trained by the SAS. This game just pist me off to no end.)
PS3 will have its must have game and graphical hit that will even make the Xbots drool. But this year is 360's year and rightfully so.
The Systems:
Xbox 360: For what you pay and what you get it's worth it. Cheaper entry for the best visuals and game selection (so far) without question.
Ok I won't lie...360 is noisy. The disc read noise is almost irritating to listen too during a quiet moment in a game. That disc will spin constantly until you physically quit the game and return to the menu. I almost feel like it's going to wear itself out sooner then later. (Just my opinion though.)
The PS3: ( Both versions) on the other hand is more expensive offering more features out of the box but very little to choose from in terms of games.
Lacking the graphical edge so far and unable to match the multi plat counterparts offered on the 360. Now, PS3 is super quiet, even when the fan(s) kicks in are nowhere near as loud as 360's fan(s). PS3 reads at slower pace thus you can barely hear it.
Cosmetics:
As far as looks go. I personally think PS3 is the winner here. It's shiny and black and fits in with my entertainment system. 360 doesn't quite look as hot. But it still looks good nonetheless.
In the end, If I had to choose only one...that would be very difficult. They are both absolutely stellar systems. But I guess it comes down to what we want as gamers and right now the 360 is offering truly awesome games the PS3 lacks and at a cheaper price to boot. The 360 is the system I would choose and take home and play and fully enjoy.
BUT....PS3 is very new, c'mon it's 2 months old! (Look at Perfect Dark 0 on 360?...what a joke!, Resistance destroys it in everyway)
Given more time the PS3 will raise some eyebrows. If the PS3 dishes out some truly must have titles and considering my love for the Playstation and being a fan, I would more then likely trade my 360 in and get one.
On final Note:
Over the past few weeks if not month the PS3 seems to be taking a public bashing at almost every angle. Whether it is Journalists, News, Bloggers, forums or even Store Clerks. Something seems brutally wrong here and while I don't let anyone make decisions for me. Hearing this much hate seems like a warning sign. Millions loved Dreamcast, yet it died a horrible death. Has Playstation run its course? Is it time for a new champ to step in and take the victory? Only time will tell. But no matter what happens with the PS3, it's one fine system and should be given a chance by all no matter if Xbox is your favorite platform or not. We all need competition to keep our companies on their toes. Remember that!
