Do you remember a while ago somebody posted a thread about how ps3 can handle scratches better then 360
I made a joke about Joystiw never posting this..

This joystiq video shows the Talledega nights BR disc being destroyed and tested, it holds up pretty well under steel wool, a ballpoint pen and a pizza slicer, whith only a knife managing to disable the disc....
well who knew

That's Kyle Orland, he's with thegamerrag.com. He was with us at E3 last year. I actually filmed a short segment for him and NAthan. Great to see BD hold up so well!

haha eat a piece of paper with the words "my words" on it! now!
cool vid, the camera was real bad but good to see TDK knew what they were doing when creating the protective coating.

Funny thing is, that doesn't even have TDK's durabis coating on it. Durabis is even stronger!

Blu-Ray is awesome Duh...

Durabis won't be used for movies as it's too expensive. Instead they use a cheaper alternative. However, it will be used for TDK recordable media.

didn't know that, thanks frosty, i thought it would be used for everything, maybe later on if it becomes cheaper to produce.

The hard coat technology used for pressed Blu-ray discs is proprietary to Sony I believe (being the most prolific source of most pressed BDs), but indeed Durabis is even stronger. It's used on TDK writable media, so it's out there to be tested by anyone that wants to.

If this Durabis is even stronger I would love to see a video test of it.

it's great stuff, TDK don't show it off enough IMO

If that vid was indicitive of how tough BR is, then really there is no need for the durabis coating, unless you plan on using the discs as skates.
EDIT: Where it says "currently active users viewing this thread, after my name there is a black "+" after my name, what's that about?

Okay it's great it reads them but it doesn't mean it won't get stuck during gameplay at some point.
But anything is less painful than a DISC READ ERROR message. By the way how does the DRE message look on the PS3?
We might never find out.

Put an HD DVD in it :P
frosty

It obviously doesn't give one, as nothing happened when the disc was ruined on the video.
Edit: LMAO^

I just found this interesting bit about dust resistance on the TDK site. They need to put this durabisnatch (http://www.durabis.com/en/tec00400.htm) on the outside of the PS3.:duh:
DURABIS: Resists Dust Adherence
For an optical disc, dust represents a major threat. One of the main reasons why dust is attracted to a disc's surface is the presence of static electricity. To help prevent dust from adhering, a disc surface must have rapid electrical discharge properties.
DURABIS hard coating technology boasts rapid electrical discharge. The figure indicates the charged electrical potential and attenuation time of three types of discs. Compared with a disc without hard coating, which shows hardly any attenuation even after one hour, a DVD with DURABIS hard coating gives up half its electrical potential after approximately 45 minutes. Even more impressively, a Blu-ray Disc with next-generation DURABIS technology gives up half its electrical potential within approximately 30 minutes.
DURABIS technology's rapid discharge effect helps reduce recording and playback errors by preventing dust from adhering inside the drive mechanism.

? Was that offensive? I was trying to combine "durabis" (latin for 'long lasting') with bisnatch (street (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bisnatch)for 'good business') which logically describes the Blu-Ray developers association.

He barely fucking touched it with half the stuff.
Like just barely rubbing it with the steel wool.
Let me try rubbing it with steel wool..guarantee it wont work when I'm done.
Just a PS3 fanboy trying to make it look stronger than it is.
Well done, Internet!

I work at blockbuster and currently rent Ps3 games and frankly they hold up about the same. We still dump them after 3 or 4 rentals due to damage. Also they got a HUGE problem with fingerprints that dont bloody want to come off.
Hell i dont want to risk alot of cleaning agents on them since we have too few.
The only systems games we dont dump alot of disks for due to damage are psp games since they dont rent all that well. Ive yet to find a disk that wont get trashed under normal moron use. No disk is safe from the masses.

And no matter how much xbox fanboys will try to downplay this, at the end of the day, Blu-Ray disks are still less prone to scratches than DVD. So ha, take that.

they better be, i am prone to leaving discs out of their cases for months on end.

Talledega Nights is a hillarious movie, but not the best encoding to showcase Bluray...
I love what joystiq did to the Blu-Ray movie...can't believe it's that strong!

I didn't know where to post this, but I thought it's good to know! :look:
Who said there won't be pr0n on Blu-ray? (http://www.tvpredictions.com/debbie011207.htm) ;)
And who said HD-DVD has a pr0n edge?
"As of now, it (the first release) will just be Blu-ray," said Vivid CEO Steve Hirsch. "But that's not to say we won't release it in HD-DVD later. Blu-ray seems to have the momentum."
:wank:
FYI Update:
Blu-Ray had a record breaking week in retail sales. According to thedvdwars.com, the Top 10 BD movies are now out pacing the Top 10 HD-DVD movies at each position. There are now 199 BD movies available vs. 170 HD-DVD and the upcoming release of "The Departed" is ranked higher on BD than on HD-DVD (and it's cheaper $23.95 vs. $27.95).

Almost every new movie release that I see advertised has a BD conterpart as well, as most of us has been saying all along. BD will just have more content in the end.
