View Full Version : Video Request (EU Members Only)

This is for all of our European members.

Remember the videos I made for the NA PS3 launch?

I'd like to do something similar for the EU launch as well. However, I don't have the $ to get a passport and plane ticket to film it myself. After all, I do have 3 PS3's to buy for our winners still and all. So, this is where you come in. Every EU member with a video camera (one that they can connect to their PC's) that is willing, please go out and film your local PS3 launch. Interview people standing in line, film them going in to the store, grabbing their PS3's, etc. Look at my videos for a reference on what I'm looking for. Those who participate will get a healthy dose of +rep and their names in the credits as well as at the beginning of their respective clips. I'd like to get as many clips as possible. So, all interested, post and let it be known.

If I can get to London (which I 98% surely will).
I'll be more than happy to do it.

I don't think anyone will camp in my city/ town.

frosty
01-21-2007, 01:37 AM
It doesn't have to be campers, just people in line when the doors open.

Fats

I'll most definitely do it, should be great fun. :)

It would be really cool if we could get one person from each Euro country to film a movie.

frosty
01-21-2007, 10:47 AM
Awesome. If we get enough participation, this could turn out to be one hell of a launch video. I want us all to be a part of this, so things like suggestions for music, etc. are all welcome. Also, once it is put together, feel free to distribute it to any site on the net. Just leave the "PSINext.com presents" at the start of it. That's all I ask.

I want the video clips you send me to be the highest quality possible, so encode them with windows media encoder at 3-4mbps and then we'll work out a way to send them to me for editing. I'll set up a FTP server or something for you to upload it to. Just PM me once you film the clip and we'll work it out from there.

I guess I could film some 640x480 30fps MPEG video with my digital camera, but since I live in a small town, I don't think I'll see people lining up anywhere. We'll see what happens though, I'll keep an eye just in case.

I'm sure I'll see people lining up in Madrid or Barcelona in the news though, just like with PSP's launch.

Garfunkel

for the music, i will make a random suggestion: how about:

Boston - more then a feeling (gamers that are out camping for the ps3 need it so bad that to them, it is more then a feeling)

Buggles - video killed the radio star (well....video games)

Mi-sex - computer games (obvious)

Cold Chisel - when the war is over (could refer to the system war!)

Genesis - in the air tonight (if it is at night)

iron maiden - two minutes to midnight (also if it is at night)

REM - its the end of the world as we know it (of gaming!)

Queen - play the game (obvious)

Chris Isaak - wicked game (obvious)

Tina Turner - simply the best (refering to ps3 ;))

anyway, they are the most relevent out of my library. should we stick to euro/aus/nz music?

frosty
01-21-2007, 10:37 PM
^I'll let you guys figure that out, as it's your territory and your video as well.

If there are no lines or campers, just go to a store when they open and interview the first couple people to buy one. Ask them what games they are getting, what SKU, and any other questions you can think of.

Fats
01-21-2007, 10:45 PM
I can't imagine there being campers in Belfast, but there should be quite a few queues. I have quite a few places to choose from so there shouldn't be a shortage of interviews.

FantasyGhost

Will be weird to ask Q's, because not everybody just speaks English. So is it ok to ask in native language, and afterwards putting subtitles on there? If we send you a doc with what questions we ask and the answers they give us, or something to go with the movie.

Fats
01-22-2007, 12:11 AM
^I was thinking that myself, I personally see no problem with people speaking in their native language and adding subtitles after. It shows the diversity of the European launch and the overall 1337ness! :)

Z
01-22-2007, 12:14 AM
great idea frosty! this will have a real gaming community feel to it. even if the footage is modest, I see it being very popular for being 'real' and fan made. :)

Yes, please, feel free to ask Q's in any language, just please provide a translation for me so I can subtitle the video. I actually think it would add an interesting "international" dynamic to the production.

Another question... since you ask for highest quality available, is *.m2ts good enough? Seriously my parents just bought the HDR-SR1 (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=HDRSR1) i can convert it to mpeg-2, but i don't know yet if i can get it to mpeg-4.

Garfunkel
01-22-2007, 12:40 AM
Native dialects/languages would be cool, i am sure that there are enough people here to translate almost any language into subtitles so that should be no problem.

frosty
01-22-2007, 02:13 AM
Mpeg 2 is perfect. HD is even better, though I'll have to downconvert it to match the quality of the other videos. Thing is, the file size will be HUGE at almost 1 GB per 5 minutes. (assuming it uses the same 25mbps m2t streams my HD camera uses.) So, you may need to compress it to another format before sending it to me. We'll work all that out once you film it.

Z

hey frosty, what is the simplest way to convert analogue to digital? are there A/V to USB cables or something? I also have a graphics card with analogue plugs, if that helps.

thanks. :)

Fats

Luckily enough even though my Canon Camcorder is a piece of crap, it has a firewire port right at the front which I can just plug into my iBook G4 and let iMovie HD do the work. I'm expecting it to be a pretty easy task to be honest.

The only thing that I'm worried about is the quality of the sound, what with it being a busy city with a lot going on, I hope it picks up the interviewee well enough.

frosty
01-22-2007, 01:04 PM
let me know what kind of graphics card you have Z.

Butters, you should be fine. Just stand close to them. Hell, I was able to get audible sound (barely) on the E3 show floor with a massive 7.1 channel surround system blaring in the background at the Sony booth.

Garfunkel
01-22-2007, 02:02 PM

or you could use a mic and mix the two.
I was going to say that. if you plug a mic to your came, only the mic will record sound. you will get much better audio quality with interviews. I guess the issue is if your cam doesn't have a mic.
let me know what kind of graphics card you have Z.
ATI All in Wonder 9200SE (http://www.ciao.co.uk/HIS_Excalibur_ALL_IN_WONDER_9200_SE__5814086)
before you hit me, I know it is supposed to to all these fancy TV things, I just have absolutely no idea how to use it at all. I just play solitaire on it. by the way, is it a good graphics card? how good or bad is it? heck, I don't even remember its price. I checked a few sites and non had a price on them. guess its too old now that nobody looks for it anymore.

PS. I use my laptop now all the time. it would be grate if there was a way to capture analogue with it instead of my PC. this is my laptop; TravelMate 4100 (http://www.acer.co.th/product/travelmate/4100/index.htm).

sorry. I appreciate any help. also, the analogue bit may answer a few questions since I am sure there are some that will use analogue cams- I hope.

Your PC card will do the trick, the laptop would have to have a capture card attached to it. However, don't you use dial up? If so then sending video would be a bitch.

FantasyGhost
01-22-2007, 10:28 PM
I can still film it in SD instead of HD.

frosty
01-23-2007, 01:16 AM
The bitrate will still be the same if we don't compress it first. Those cameras switch to the DV codec when filming in SD rather than Mpeg-2 for HD, both of which are encoded at 25mbps.

I can always send it through a netcafe. ;)

please tell me more about how to do it on a laptop. direct me to a site if it will take too much explaining. I keep getting lost searching for a solution. too many options.

frosty
01-23-2007, 11:02 PM
The only way is to buy a PCMIA video capture card, plug it into the side of it, and then plug your camera into that. problem with analog capture is, you also have to run a sound wire as well. Some video capture cards don't capture sound also, so you'd have to do that seperatley. Either way it's going to be a complicated process.

Z
01-24-2007, 12:26 PM
ah, things like that remind me why I love anything digital. thanks for the info. I'll bother more PC shops around here till I can get a way. seems even they don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
I think I can also play around with my PC. I almost got it working once.

frosty
01-24-2007, 09:53 PM

I'll be recording the queue and when people buy the PS3, I'll even ask the store if I can stand inside and record the first person that buys a PS3.

I'll 99% get a camera and I can upload the footage onto my PC (hell even professionally edit it) but as I said to you in a PM the quality takes a huge dive for some reason.

Still easily watchable though, no doubt.

frosty
03-16-2007, 02:53 AM
I'll handle all the editing. I'll also send you software to compress the video if you need. And camera phone video will work too, fats. Any camera will do, as long as you can get the video on the PC to send to me.

Count me in frosty, though I can't promise what exactly I'm going to capture on to the camera (the queue or the actual release), if there's going to be a queue that is...
The biggest gamestore here in Stockholm has decided not to have the store open during the night of the release because the demand is a lot smaller than the supply.

frosty
03-20-2007, 08:37 AM
Not a problem, if there isn't a line, just try to find someone picking one up and ask them what games they got, if they are using it for games or movies, stuff like that.

Okay I'm heading down to my local shops now with a camera and with the hope of finding a few PS3 buyers and if not I'll just interview the shop clerk.

I don't think we had a midnight opening so all the PS3 buyers should be there now.

Am I allowed to say I am there on behalf of E-mpire and Sony?
That would get some people interested to go in front of the cam ;) But maybe I'm not allowed to do that for some legal reasons.

Just let me know of that and I'm on my way.

frosty
03-23-2007, 10:13 AM
say you're from PSINext.com

Anyone else wanna ask some questions on camera? I think it would be cool to collect a bunch of interviews so we can see what the turnout really was for the launch. Also, still pictures are cool as well if you don't have a video camera. As long as we can see how many turned out, that's what counts. If we all work together on this we can prove the naysayers wrong.

Unfortunately we did have a midnight opening so there wasn't any crowd this morning and all the managers were being an ass about being interviewed saying I needed to set an interview up through their PR Agency.

But the HMV manager was happy to talk about the PS3 launch and so we did.

I really should have been more prepared (since I wasn't prepared at all, I came up with the questions on the spot) but it turned out pretty good.
