Note:It's a long thread but all the details are in 1st post!

I've been following this thread on the US Playstation board for a few weeks now and would like to know people's opinion on if this is a legitimate problem or simply a lack of understanding or overreaction.

The thread's author has done a lot of work comparing PS2 games running on both the PS2 and PS3 using various cables and game settings. His conclusion is that PS2 games that don't support 480p produce unacceptable graphical artifacts he calls "Pixel Flipping" when running on a PS3.

Also, the thread has gotten pretty ridiculous, some posters are talking about a class action against Sony...

This is a known "issue" and it hopefully will be addressed in March or in a future soon to be released update. It only affects 480i PS2/1 games that do not have 480p functionality.

As for a class action they would have to prove that sony caused them a tangible loss in some fashion, good luck to them on that.

This is definitely a problem, but I think Sony will fix it soon. Even my wife noticed it when we popped in Katamari Damaci...

In what sense does this warrant a class action suit? Hahhahahaha, where did that come from.

Just keep praying the update is being worked on and will reach here sooner than later, that's all we can do.

Class action in this instance would be absolutely ridiculous, and would result in nothing. Those folk need a reality check.

Anyway it *is* a legitimate issue, but as the work on emulation and the software side progresses it should be ironed out as time goes on.

xb, what do you think about software emulation possibly coming, and if you think it may be, when do you think would be a realistic time to expect it?

I expect March(with their alleged "major" firmware update)
Otherwise, they had better have it out sometime later in the summer.

I asked xb :P lol just messing.

Really though? I'd expect it'd be later, but I have nothing to go by other than my gut feelings lol. xb is always on top of things though, I wonder what he'd say.

let me rephrase that: "I expect March(with our alleged "major" firmware update)"
Sony never said a thing. don't turn this into an IGN spin.

The Sony PlayStation 3 European debut - due to take place in March 2007 - will be accompanied by a major firmware update, a senior Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Europe executive has revealed.

Alas, SCE Europe VP of Technology Paul Holman, cited by Australian website Smarthouse, didn't say what the update will contain, though he alluded to "new features [and] new gaming capabilities".source (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/12/05/sony_ps3_firmware_update/)

I personally don't think that the full emulation will accompany the March update (which I think/hope will be a very substantial one), although I do think Sony is trying to get it done before the end of the year, so that thhey can start removing the EE/GS from the board as soon as possible.

I can look into this some, but Sony is very compartmentalized in terms of their groups, so not sure if the people I know would have hard details on the B/C front. Even then, it's hard to say whether they would feel comfortable discussing it.

But for me, I'm thinking late '07.

The sooner they can get software emulation working properly, the better. They need to get rid of the PS2 hardware.

I remember reading that software emulation was almost ready, but it wasn't good enough yet. I wonder whether they have managed to run some games successfully while others need tweaking or if the emulator isn't ready for any title. If it is the former, I think Sony could release a firmware update that could switch between software emulation and PS2 hardware depending on which one could produce better results in each case. Do they need to make a full transition instead of a gradual one from hardware to software anyway? Even though they couldn't remove the EE+GS yet, they still would make PS2 gaming better.

Hey thanks a lot for the input xb, I appreciate it. :)

I imagine the case is they have some games working, but not the amount that they can run with hardware emulation. Even though that solution would probably be better then what we have now.....

Well, it may not warrant a class action suit, but this is a major problem with the PS3 so far. We were led to believe that we'd have full b/c and even improvements to PS2 games running on PS3 (AA or upscaling of resolution). I was quite shocked when I first put in FFXII and it looked terrible. Maybe we'll get this fixed in March, but it's annoying to have to keep the PS2 around when the PS3 has PS2 hardware in it. I'm not gonna send my PS3 back or anything, but it's an issue that Sony should address ASAP...

CreativeWriter - Are you using a HDMI, Component or Composite cable?

Apparently, some PS2 games look better when using a Composite video cable and setting the PS3's output to 480i.

HDMI->DVI. It's not easy for me to get behind the TV (it's heavy), and it's not worth it to me to change cables everytime I want to play a PS2 game. I'll just boot up the old PS2 until the software emu is up and running. It would be a nice bonus for waiting so long if the software emulation allowed upscaling and additional AA.

It would be a nice bonus for waiting so long if the software emulation allowed upscaling and additional AA.I'm really looking forward to this. Phil Harrison did hint at enhancements on BC gaming, and I don't think he just meant shorter loading times.
