Someone asked me this question...

Hewlett Packard are often considered the best printers out there, but is it really true?

What about Brother printers?

Or is there something better than both of them?

Cannon is good but expensive. Ask someone at the store that knows something and they will let you know a lot.

A good place to check for a cheap printer would probably be www.tigerdirect.com

or if you are in Canada, www.tigerdirect.ca

Here are some stats on a $99 HP printer from PC World (It won their "Cost Efficient Printer" award).

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/chart_test_report/0,prodid,5662,00.asp

We have an HP at work and while their computers do suck they make decent printers. Brother makes good stuff as well but you will pay a little more for it.

Here is a list of stuff I suggest looking at when buying a Printer

1: What are you going to use it for? - Who cares if it prints at 4000 dpi if you are only going to be printing text and simple graphics. Don't get more than you need if you don't plan on changing how and what you print.
2: Check the toner cost - I can't name how many times people have bought a printer that was on sale for 30% off, got it home and ran it out of ink then ended up paying $30 for a print cartridge every other week. Check prices on the models you are looking at using www.staples.com or some similar web site.
3: Speed - The printer I listed above does a fantastic job and is a great price but prints 4 pages per minute. If you are into printing graphics / simple photos then this should be no problem but if all you print are fax cover sheets / labels and reports this will kill your productivity.

Another thing to consider is if you want high quality digital prints consider using Wal-Mart http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?path=0%3A5426&dept=5426&cat=5426 or some alternative (though Wal Mart has the most cost efficient printing of standard size photos). They even have a place online where you can upload photos then (if I am not mistaken) tell them how many prints you want and which store you will pick them up and get charge pennies per picture

If you are talking about Ink cartridge printers and want quality then go with Canon. But if you want an affordable ink printer go with epson because they also have good quality printers but their cartridges are a crapload cheaper. Now if you are going to go all out and get a color laser printer, go with OKI Data. I just got my $600 color laser C5100 and it is amazing. It prints full color pictures so freaking fast and the colors are a lot more accurate then ink printers are.
