On the Sony-owned site PSP Connect, a large banner promising a Gran Turismo HD video preview uses a screenshot from Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing 3.

http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/758/758402/sony-site-snafu-20070125113336190.jpg

The image on top is from PGR 3 developer Bizarre Creation's website. It is clearly the same image used on the PSP Connect banner displayed on the bottom of our graphic.

Mistakes do happen and it's safe to assume Sony had no intention of using its competitors' arcade racing title to advertise Gran Turismo HD. And yet, it happened. In a high-stakes battle for control of the next-gen gaming world, even innocent errors can become big news. Already, Microsoft's Major Nelson is reporting on the snafu as is IGN's sister site Team Xbox.

Years from now, Sony execs may be able to sit back and get a good laugh out of this. But in the midst of a battle that could decide the fate of an entire company, this is no laughing matter.

As of press time, the Project Gotham Racing shot had not been pulled from the Connect Web site, but a Sony Computer Entertainment America representative told GameSpot that the Connect team was being notified of the issue.

GTHD Gran Turismo 4? Well, whoever did that obviously didn't know what they were doing. I don't know if it was a Sony employee or not, but they surely chose the wrong media. Stupid people are everywhere!

It reminds me of when some "new" Lair screenshots appeared before TGS and it almost looked like a SNES game in one of them. They probably had it for a long time, from a very old build, and they should have never published it, but they did.

How can a non Sony employee post it on their website?

Dude, I want to post things on their website...lol

Nights into Dreams for PSP confirmed by Sony of America would be my first post!

News of something Sony did on their PS3 section seems fairly PS3 oriented to me.

Are you in a bad mood?

Not only did that person put up a picture of PGR3, but they also got the NAME WRONG (GT:HD is for the PS3, not PSP).

Can Sony get anything right?

To be fair to Sony, it is the picture used to download the GT:HD trailer to your PSP.

:-)

I wonder what Bizarre thinks of this.

Are you in a bad mood?Hmmm, very slightly, but it has nothing to do with this topic *hintCBhint*. I only mean that it looks more like a PSP board or general gaming board topic to me.

Not only did that person put up a picture of PGR3, but they also got the NAME WRONG (GT:HD is for the PS3, not PSP).Agreed. Unprofessional employee no matter what.

Can Sony get anything right? So much in confidence so soon... so aggressive... such a familiar smell...

More than likely this was done diliberatly by someone in the chain (intern's roommate switches the pic on the thumbdrive, intern gives the pic to the art guy who adds the details then gives to the web team, etc.) for the sole purpose of fanatisim. Just like when President Bush took office, the democratic interns damaged all the keyboards by removing the "w" key.

Sony itself has nothing to do with this.

Not just that the Screenshot is wrong, the logo is wrong too.

EDIT: Yeah this topic title is better.

An extra amount of scrutiny adds more to the list of mistakes -- I'm not excusing that this guy screwed up by putting the wrong game in a picture, but when you're under as much scrutiny as Sony right now I think you'd find it near-impossible to really cover all your bases. Mistakes happen. It only took one person to pick out this picture and few people (if any) will be able to point out which racing game that is purely by graphics (considering there's little environments shown, car graphics are all you can go by) and cars available.

when you're under as much scrutiny as Sony right now I think you'd find it near-impossible to really cover all your bases. Mistakes happen. So true. Let me anticipate to everyone else (or almost) by saying this:

OMG Sony! PS3 has a few somewhat sharp corners! I could lose an eye if someone tossed me my PS3 and hit my face! Can't you design decent corners for your systems or what???

I cannot see this as a mistake at all. employees making these pics don't google the images they need. they don't get the name of project (and very prime projects at that) wrong.

too many 'specific' mistakes to make this just an error. I smell something fishy. if this is really posted officially by Sony, I expect an explanation very soon.

Someone who worked for Sony did this! Someone who worked for Sony did this! That is why it was in the title, clearly expressing it. Their is a reason a lot of people saw this and Sony alread responded to it.

Can you guys stop changing my titles, it's really starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I feel this could be photoshoped by someone and claims it was taken from an official Sony site.

has anybody here actually went to that site and confirmed it?

^no, sony acknowledged that they had been in the wrong and has fixed it, no photoshopping.

Seems to me the company hired to operate the web site may have done so for MS too and just used 'stock' imagery. On that note, this means it may not have been Sony's fault at all.
