I bought a 360!!!
J/K its my friends 360. My friend Ed is one of those guys that buys ALL the systems. he's always very open minded. Now 1 year after 360 launch I personally have had a chance to do a side buy side shootout. Over the course of two Saturdays. This time on level ground with both systems on a substantial HDTV and sound setup. Setting up the 360 was cake the digital audio auto recognized the optical port. And the all in one (except HDMI) cable made it a true plug and play system.

first off GrOW:
I spent a good 3+ hours playing it. Yea it looks good I will give it that although I could see some definite up scaling artifacts going on as I willing to bet its native operating rez is not my TVs 1920x1080. but hell the lighting looks killer and the chain saw bayonet was sooo satisfying... I really liked the duck and cover game play and reloading mini game was a nice touch. But I sometimes found moving to be clunky and irritating when trying to go from duck and cover to normal FPS movement. aiming was also kind of sloppy but I attribute that to my lack of familiarity to 360s controller. I also noticed how much the environments repeated them self’s both objects and textures repeated themselves so often you got the feeling after a while it was the same room again and again only rearranged. (possibly to save on disk space? ) Nice thing was the lack of load screens. But than again no level went on any longer than a RFOM level before a “story break” anyway so I don’t see what the big deal was about supposed “seamless play”.
RFOM:
The previous week we had played RFOM (you all know the game so ill keep it short) in co-op. Ed really like the wacky weapons “there is really some influence here from Insomniacs other games” he made note of the environments “once you get out of the cities and into the alien levels things really start to look impressive and complex” when we first landed in Manchester he was blown away buy the amount of onscreen action. “HOLY F&^% THIS IS CRAZY!” lol he’s very excitable… in the end he was a little disappointed buy the traditional FPS game play. I guess he’s just to used to GrOW buy now. But he did make note “this is a launch game and it looks and plays this good! I cant wait to see PS3 down the road.”
Geometry wars vs. Blast factor:
I liked GW it has a nice retro feel nice trippy sound track and the use of my whole 65” screen was killer. Oh and the whole gravity wells during game play was cool. Then enter Blast Factor in Co-oP with ATx2… Holy crap we both where bouncing around the room like chimps on a double espresso and crack! I kept wanting to move on to other games but he just keep wanting to try again… “just one more time.” proof that you don’t need pixel shader 6.0 and Ray tracing to make a fun game. BTW Lalilulelo, leftovers and filibuster… we beat your high scores last night ;) your next goldeyes!
Motorstorm:
We moved on to the motor storm demo now at this point I never mentioned SixaxiS I figured he knew about it. Turned on the motion control and handed it to him explained “just steer with the whole controller” he looked confused. I explained the whole motion thing and he was totally surprised. He’s asked “you mean kind of like the Wii?” ***SONY YOU NEED TO ADVERTISE SixaxiS MORE!!!*** well anyway he is in love with Motorstorm for all the reasons we are Physics beautiful environments the sound the mud the controls the wheels. Ed stated “this puts to shame all the ATVs MXs and rally games it’s a all in one. The multiplayer will be nuts” he also asked me “If you damage anything on the track when you come around next time will it still be there?” I showed him some vids of the muddy tracks online. He asked me when is the game coming out. I told him its possibly going to be out March 23rd coinciding with the euro launch. To his reply “are PS3s readily avaible?” sounds like a system seller to me gentlemen!
Deadrising:
This game Looks great the first moment I picked up a “HDTV” and smashed it over the heads of 3-4 Zombies I was loving it. Nearly everything in the game is a usable item. Where this game fails is the stupid quest that you have to go on. Why could it just not be a F$%^ the story of a life time and just make it out alive game? The games engine would be much better used if the wighters of the plot made it a horror survival game instead of a Photo journalist escapade. Putting on children’s cloths than beating zombies over the head with a lead pipe after putting a Lego helmet on there heads is still a blast but gets old buy your 200th zombie kill. And I just was not interested in taking pictures of soccer moms getting eaten alive or listening to blue hairs go on about there dog Madonna. This game would be awesome as a 12.99 bargain bin game or a renter.
Lost planet:
What can I say this game reinforces why I don’t like MS platforms it’s a FPS in the snow! It suffers from simplistic repeating environments. Individual objects look great but are all to often reused. Possibly to save disk space  also like Grow you never see to many targets at one time… seems 2-3 really awesome looking enemies is the trend now. Unless there simple spiders or something.
Dead or alive 2:
LOL what can I say… hells yea I like this game all aROUND! Boob physics are nice and all the mini games are just simply fun. Its like Mario party goes to spring break without all the drunken homoerotic frat boys! The island looks so good you can smell the…
sea air yea the sea air…
I liked this game on Xbox and even more on 360… I only wish this game would get ported to PS3
In the end I wish I had more of the PS3 to show him but he’s not dumb and understands its only 3 months old with the full launch coming in late march. But in the end Ed said
“I remember the early days of the PS2 and how some DC games actually looked better but it didn’t take long for PS2 to pick up (personally I remember it taking for ever but ok) steam. And looking at some of the current stuff for PS3 just imagine what its going to be like very soon” in the ends I think Motorstorm made him move his priorities from his next console being the Wii to PS3. it’s a system seller! In the end he’ll buy all 3. but after some exposure to just RFOM and a few demos I think it changed his perception of the system.
As far as 360 I walked away with a feeling that its not all that bad. Down the road I could see myself owning one if the price gets down low enough, It’s a solid system and if a one really good game comes out that really catches my attention who knows the pic at the top of the post just might be permeate. In the end though I cant help but feel that the 360’s Future games will have to reliy on replayablity and Multiplayer in order to keep them interesting. As storage issues already seem to be happening. If 360’s future formula becomes short but sweet multiplayer, and PS3’s becomes the platform for the huge Epic games. Than I could see a future where both could co-exist.
As far as Wii is concerned I will get one eventually.
