Hope it wasn't posted already :)
From page 2:
Boon: The main thing we’re doing right now is the core technology. We’re using the Unreal 3 engine, and we’re getting our base, “How do display a character, normal-mapping, bump-mapping, shadows” all the things that are expected of the game. I have a bunch of ideas on paper in terms of things that I’d like to theoretically try, but it’s not like it’s in a playable state yet.

As long as it doesn't have stiff animations like Deadly Alliance/Deception, then it's all good.

No matter how you may feel about Gears of War, you have to admit that it is a visually stunning game...even Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon seems to think so. So much so, in fact, that he wants the next chapter in the MK saga to look like it, as he told Game Informer in a recent interview.
"To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, 'Holy s___!' That's the look that we've been talking about." Visually, that's what we want to do."
I somehow doubt Kitana would be nearly as hot with a neck as thick as her waist, but your mileage might vary on that one. Boon went on to explain that this was a time for change in the MK series.
Everything is getting trashed. We're reinventing everything from the ground up. We really think that's needed--you know, we're on Mortal Kombat 8, in a sense--to kind of wipe the slate clean every once in a while, and I kind of feel that now is the time."

Actually my twitch that sparked from the mention of the UE was a twitch of anger.
And now that he wants to make it look like Gears Of War which in my opinion has a very dull art style...... :twitch: :twitch:
On the plus side.......I'm sure the game will be very violent

Exactly.
Deadly Alliance had some nice concepts, but was a shit game. And the entire series hasn't been good SINCE MK2. Americans just can NOT make good fighting games. It's not their forte, really.
I'll stick to Tekken, VF, and SC...but I do hope they can really revitalize what was MK...

MK was so great because of it's crazy violence and blatant gore and bloodshed. So many games today already has this, there's no way you can sell you game off of finishing moves anymore.
I do hope that Tekken 6 or Soul Calibur supports blood though...But this MK stuff has been dead for years now.

Namco are stupid... but they're not that stupid.
:P

that is true for every new spec leap. the question is, will they simply 'renew' everything and make a prettier MK with more gallions of red blob lava shooting out, or will they actually re-invent the series- and by that I mean change every single thing-mechanics, fighting style, input commands, the works?
MK for me is probably the worst fighting game out there. but I am always interested in transitions and how some series change on new hardware. I'll see what they can do, but Midway does not have the tech muscle or talent to sway me in. as for fighting, Tekken has my heart since the first day I say it in a mall back in 95.

They better stop with the dail-a-combo system.

MK1 was by far the best. it was just much more fun killing Goro when he was a blurry chunk of cheese.
don't much care for the series over wise, SC and Teken finish him.

i don't think that the mortal kombat series is un helpable. its still a profitable game. i think that they have lost the true direction of the game and are trying to meld all their failures into one game. all those mini games were a whole game at one time. they are still trying to push those games.
the build a character was an interesting thing. the build a finsher was cool too. it jus came late and wasn't put out there enough. mortal combat is a great game for people like me who would rather play unrealistic fighting games and look at more than boob physics.

lack of realism or sexual gratuity isn't the issue. It's just a lousy fighting engine and it's been left behind by all the others.

in summation, 'mortal kombat has lost its vision and any direction it once had. It tries and fails to be a jack of all trades and is, worse still, a master of none. Gears of War! That's a sweet game! If we emmulate gears of war's aesthetic we might be able to breathe new life into the series! Oh wait, the fighting mechanics are still garbage. We should just stop making them. It's a tired series that's 14 years old and needs to be put down.'
I mean, seriously. Was he waiting for a game like GeOW to come along so they could find some kinda way to revitalize this [decrepit] franchise? Howabout going after tekken or soul calibur's fighting system, instead of one game's art direction?

Unless they completely rewamp their animation scheme I have 0 interest in this game. MK has by far the worst looking stiff animations I ever seen. Most fun I had with a MK game was with Shaolin Monks.

MK has all the tools in place to be a Great game, they need to fix the Stiff robot animation, Add more moves to each Style and try and make it more Custom combo instead of the current scripted crap they have now, I don't want them to copy Tekken or VF, but they need to give the Character more freedom and allow gamers to Chain certain combos with other moves, if they do these things MK can be a great game.

Shaolin Monks was tight. Maybe they should just refocus the MK story and mythology into an action fighter, because they actually got that one right. The fighting games can't stand up to tekken, vf, soul calibur, guilty gear or street fighter.

I can just imagine now. Jax will just be that black guy Malcom from Gears of Wars, only he wears an armor arm. And no one will even notice that it's just that guy from Gears of Wars. And Katana will just be another guy from Gears of War, with the added long hair to make him look like a girl. Lol.

I've said this in another place: MK is like Micheal Jackson; he was the king of his time, but he didn't evolve. he stood still while everybody walked past him.
MK has many potential features going for it. their mini games, adventure quest, etc. are all good efforts, but they need to stop living in the Genesis era and think 'true next-gen'. they need to seriously scrap the entire fighting engine (the core of the game) and start something totally new.
PS. Micheal Jackson is still the king of po and a dancer like no other even dares to challenge. :) *dose the Moonwalk*

I agree 100%, MK has everything going for it, as long as it isn't a 1-on-1 fighter, good charactors and a decent (if cheesy) story, and Shaolin Monks was cool.
