View Full Version : A question about the PS3 controller.

I was just wondering how many of you, now that you own a Playstation 3, wish that Sony had stuck to the "Boomerang" controller?
I, personally, think the design they used in the end (DualShock-style) was flawless, but would personally like them to have released PS3 with that controller design for something fresh and new. It was supposedly very comfortable as well.
I'm just inquiring to what the general consencious is here?

I love the Dual Shock-Sixaxis shape - design more than any other controller in the world .
i don't mind if sony release the "boomerang" as secondary option in the future...

I wish Sony releases a limited edition of the boomerang controller because I really want one. I'd even buy a home-made one if the quality is decent.

The handles definitely lend themselves to the tilt function or more of a steering and turning mechanism. I wish they did stick with it. And while keeping the same playstation button layout the design really says 'high tech'.

I liked the old prototype.

A lot of us did. But the outcry and criticism (as retarded and ignorant as it was) was so strong you could spit on it and so that was the last we saw of it.

I would have liked to try that control.

Funny how much shit that controller got when it was shown in prototype form, then when the SixaxiS was revealed the shit was flying because somehow people all of the sudden missed the prototype.
I can roll with both, but I'm definitely curious about the prototype one... I would much have liked to at least be able to try it out.

i really wanted to try it out, everyone was complaining because it looked weird and didn't take into consideration that maybe it better fit your hand and stuff like that.

That's what happens when you're king. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Where were the 'sholder' buttons on the prototype ? I think it might be awkward to use them ...

Where were the 'sholder' buttons on the prototype ? I think it might be awkward to use them ...They are right where they're supposed to be, although L2 and R2 aren't triggers. That's the only change I'd like to apply to the boomerang controller.

F***, I even tried to persuade some people to like this controller, in the forums I've gone to so that they stop bitching about it, I was really sad when Sony sticked with the Dualshock shape, I really hope they release it, I would buy it, really fast, its so alien and cool.... Why, oh Why people tend to act ignorant and doubtful just because it's different, If it was in the 360 or Wii nobody would complain but because it was Sony, everybody bitched about it. I miss the "boomerang" :( When I saw the tilt function, I knew why the Prototype had that shape, I've even told people thats why Sony didn't steal the MS tech from Nintendo, because of the way the Prototype was designed, like a steering wheel. Please don't show me that picture again  It pains me just to remember it
I'd have liked them to stick with the Boomerang, it wasn't at all eye pleasing in my opinion, but it was certainly something different. If it handles well and is comfortable, that's all I need.

Oh god no....
I was thinking about this the other day. (I do have thoughts about stuff other than PS3 occassionally though. :) ).
If it wasn't for the Gran Turismo demo, the swively badge at the front, the silver letters and the sixaxis, you couldn't even tell it's a Playstation. The games out for it, apart from Ridge Racer 7,are not the usual ones we're used to on Playstation. It's some strange alien machine.
The dual shock is a familiar symbol of gaming around the world, it means gaming and Playstation. Pointlessly changing it would make the PS3 even more unplaystation. Glad it's familiar.

I've always said that I love the boomerang, and I'm really sad that they didn't choose to ignore the fans and just run with the idea. The SXS just feels too short for Motorstorm, if you know what I mean.

It makes more sense now, with sixaxis the boomerang would be more steering wheel like, that was the concept.
But the amount of abuse that controller took was amazing, almost nobody liked it. I think if we had known about the motion control we'd have liked it more. We only got given half the concept.
But it's good it's familiar.
And you know how easy these things are to take apart, maybe someone will do a replacement case...!

I don't know about the first one, but the second pic was confirmed to be fake. I remember, since I made a thread with a here at PSInext a few years ago.

Yeah, the second one is a cardboard fake. The first one is genuine.
The sticks didn't feel right, I agree with that. Anyway, sixaxis sticks are different to boomerang's and Dual Shock 2's. That could have been changed on the boomerang controller if Sony had wanted to manufacture it in the end instead of making it similar to the well known PS controllers, so I don't think that would have been a problem. Same goes to the shoulder buttons. The boomerang was just a prototype after all, I'm sure they could have changed anything if necessary.
