Retailers reporting "overwhelming demand" - Sony

Online retailer Play.com is taking six times more pre-orders than it received for PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360 - and 15 times more than the Nintendo Wii.

That's according to head of games Gian Luzio, who told GamesIndustry.biz that PS3 is "the most pre-ordered console yet" for Play. The retailer is offering a GBP 524.99 bundle which includes first-party titles MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji.

Play also ran pre-order schemes for the Wii and Xbox 360, but some customers were left disappointed when they failed to receive their consoles on day one.

"We underestimated the demand and we were very disappointed that we could not fulfil all pre-orders due to stock shortages," admitted Luzio.

However, Play has pledged to deliver all pre-ordered PS3 units on launch day, with Luzio stating, "We have taken the necessary steps to ensure that customers will only be able to pre-order the system up until Play's allocation has been reached.

"We will always want more consoles to satisfy customer demand, however, we are satisfied that Sony are doing all they can to fulfil demand," he added.

Luzio went on to say that the inclusion of a Blu-ray player in the PlayStation 3 will have a "massive impact" on the retailer's business.

"Figures from the US show that Blu-ray movie sales are outselling HD-DVD by a factor of 2:1 since the launch of PS3 and we have similar sales expectations.

"In addition to the games and movie growth we expect to see a large increase in the sales of 1080p TVs to make full use of the PS3's superior resolution," he concluded.

It's not just Play which is seeing healthy pre-orders for PS3, according to Sony. A spokesperson told GI.biz, "With an unprecedented day one shipment of 1 million machines into Europe and a software catalogue of over 30 titles available at launch, retailer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

"Woolworths, Amazon and Play, to name a few, are reporting record breaking pre-orders and an overwhelming demand for PS3."

The PlayStation 3 will launch in Europe on March 23, priced at GBP 425 / EUR 599 for the 60GB model.

Aright, I think it's about time to say that Blu Ray has officially one the next gen media format battle. BD is gonna be intstrumental in how much success the PS3 will have, I can feel some good things coming, this is awesome.

Got my pre-order sorted, no thanks to Amazon. They specifically said they would start taking orders today from 9am through to 5pm. I wasn't able to check until 1pm and when I did I didn't see the pre-order icon on the site, and thought I may have missed the opportunity to pre-order. After all, the Wii's on Amazon sold within five minutes. Anyway I just as I was considering my options, I thought I would check again when I got home just to make sure. The magic "Pre-Order this Item" button had appeared. So come the 23rd I should be the proud owner of a PS3...for now all I can do is wait.

After checking news sources it would seem as though Amazon had some sort of balls-up and didn't actually start taking pre-orders until 1:35pm...more than four hours after their said time. Oh well.

Make sure you get your order in quick VG, otherwise you might not be happy come the 23rd.

I saw it after I posted. Yep, that's a pretty bad site. In fact, I'm removing the links so they won't get the pleasure of having our Google PR rank to them.

Lol, I've only visited them a few times now and again but it just seems to consist of poor journalism regardless of whatever console they're talking about.

The site may suck, which I agree with. That being said, you can still go on the site and order the bundle. If it was outselling the Wii by 15 times (which is impossible since the Wii had more units than the PS3), why is it still available for order?

because more people bought the Wii from the shops and didn't bother getting it online? because 360 is an older machine (with massive overstocking) and hasn't got the excitement value of a newer console? because PS3 is difficult to get hold of any other way?

as for that other site... no way would i order from them!

What boggles my mind is that no matter what shop I go into here (HMV, Virgin, Game, Gamespot) There's no Wii's to be found. None at all.

I wanted one but there aren't any in stores or online. I am just going to blow the money for PS3 games if can't find any.

Yeah Wii is scarce man...So many people are willing to buy one because of it's price and fun factor-Ninty needs to step up here. Sony did surprisingly well this time around-but have a horrible price point and not enough killer games in the early days...A bit backwards eh?

Back on topic-this is turning into the real launch for PS3 with every announcement.
