PS3 Japan sales gain breaks four-week dip

Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 increased this week as the machine's software gained traction on the retail charts.
Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 23,431 units between Feb. 5 and Feb 11, up from 18,727 units the week prior.

The jump in sales can be attributed to the release of Sega's Virtua Fighter 5, the latest sequel to the top-selling fighting game series which debuted at No. 1 in the same period.

The increase in hardware sales also ends a four-week dip that saw PS3 demand decrease by the thousands each week.

The PS3 has sold more than 1 million units in Japan and 2 million in worldwide sales. The machine will debut in Europe on Mar. 23. Initial pre-sales at Amazon.com's U.K. division have ranked the product at No. 1 in its PC & Video Games section.

Sony expects to reach 6 million PS3 units shipped by Mar. 2007.

Like come on, its selling at a faster rate than the PS2 was @ the same time in ITS life, and the PS3 is TWICE as much in price (launch)

A local walmart manager investigated the electronics section last Thursday after receiving numerous complaints about the downsizing of the section. At first he could not figure out why there was about 30% less room in the electronics then what was designated in the floor plans. It wasn't until he noticed that one section of the wall suddenly changed color from white to black that he found the reason. Roughly eighty Playstation 3 Systems had been neatly stacked on display which went unnoticed for so long since it's release that many customers and employees had thought they were simply part of the building.

Unfortunately, disposing of the forgotten relics turned out to be much more difficult. The heavy items had compressed on each other for so long, each box had bonded together at the molecular level. Demolition crews are expected to arrive Tuesday morning to tear down the back wall of the Walmart building and begin demolishment of what's been coined, "The Black Wall of Death" by many of the employees. The entire endeavor is expected to last eight weeks, but the manger feels it has to be done.

Due to the mass of the bonded units, they can't be launched into deep space along with the other loads of unsold PS3s which, according to NASA, weighed in at approximately three-hundred tons.
