I have honestly been wanting to try the game, its been rather slow as far as gaming goes lately.

Champions of Norrath was sweet -- Snowblind did a great job with that game and it succeeded critically. From the looks & sounds of it, only the Champions of Norrath games did good, and I think it's for that reason, but I haven't played Untold Legends :-p

I liked it on PSP so I will most likely get it on PS3 as well. So if you are evil then so am I.....

TBH, i loved the game. IGN and every other media reviewer gave it bad marks, but i loved it. It might be that all I played was online, but I had a blast through all of it. The last two main bosses could have been tougher, but in all honesty we were playing in the lowest difficulty level. If asked, I would recommend it.

You know what? I enjoy it too, although I haven't played it in a while (addicted to Gears). I think it's a fun game, although I got it for free from a contest, so my opinion may be slightly biased. Regardless, I enjoy playing it, and that's all that matters. Definitely no Champions of Norrath, but I can see the next game in the series getting there.

A PS3 game that the media gave unjust scores too. *shock*
This game is better smoother and prettier than Marval UA in my opinion.
one shouldn't feel alienated or avoid some games just because a bunch of forum opinions is that the game suck. if you feel attracted to it, find out why. you may like it despite what general internet belief thinks. look at me, I love EA and Ubi and Win XP and movies like Constantine, Van Hellsing and I hate every Gundam game ever made and I'm not afraid to say it. d--O_o--b

Visual Effects in the Work Place
Alex Carbonero - Lead effects dude Untold Legends Dark Kingdom
Hello, my name is Alex Carbonero and I've been making effects in some form or another for the last 10 years or so. From 2d to 3d to 4d, and now even 5d - how about that!
I've worked on comic books, TV, movies and video games, and I have to say that working on video games is the most rewarding medium for me. Why, you might ask. Well you are allowed so much creative freedom and it’s real-time, but there are also a whole lot of effects that need to be created. I've worked on several titles for PS2, XBox, GC, PC, Mac and now the Playstation 3. The power of the PS3 is an awesome and an exiting thing to work with. The big challenge now is figuring out how to balance all the incredible features available to us. Dark Kingdom is packed with effects and our effect team had three artists: Mike Chubb, Sarah Barnes and myself.
At the beginning of the project there was no real effect tool or effect pipeline for the PS3 Engine. I spent a lot of time becoming very familiar with the entire art development pipeline so that we could identify any potential bottlenecks that would eventually hinder our ability to implement effects in the game. You see, effects can potentially be attached to any asset in the game and often need to be multipurpose. Figuring out how an effect needs to be created and how it should be added to the game can be very confusing at times. It was really important that we set up a pipeline that covered as much as we could think of, so that our engineers didn’t have to shoehorn features at the end. Usually adding feature late in the game means you don’t get exactly what you need.
Once we figured out the pipeline and identified our needs, two of our engineers (Bijan Forutanpour and John Buckley) put together a really cool set of effect tools that allowed us to create a wide range of effects, from the simplest flame torch to very elaborate scripted effect sequences.
In short we need to convey the energy that is transmitted through objects, be it physics or magic. But in most instances the energy usually falls under a few categories: smoke, water, electricity, fire and light beams are some of the most common elements. Effect artists need to become very familiar with the way physical forces affect the elements to show how energy is being transferred.
For some of the more elaborate effect sequences, it helps to create concept art for your desired target. Then the artist needs to break down the effect into very simple elements that will make up the effect. Taking into consideration what type of effect render modules are available in the game engine, the artist can then start making some of the base effect elements and tie them together to create some pretty elaborate effect.
Working on this game has been very challenging and exiting at the same time. Working with a new engine, new tools and new platform has some many unknowns; at times it felt it would be impossible to get everything done. But working with a really strong team of professionals made it all happen and that’s what it’s all about.
I want to give a big thanks to Sarah and Mike for making my life super easy, and a huge thanks to John and Bijan for dealing with me.

from the pics, the game actually looks pretty good- especially for a day one release. I am not into wRPGs, so I never got into it nor its PSP alterations. but talking with those who do like these kinds of games, they liked UL.

The reason why I think Untold Legends got so bad reviews is because it's basically something like "Champions of Norrath High Definition Edition". It doesn't really scream next-gen, and for that it is highly criticized. If it was released for PS2, I think the general consensus would be that it's a good game. Now it's a not-too-next-gen game for PS3 which is supposed to be the starting point of next-gen -> of course it will get bad reviews. Maybe gaming journalists thought the game would be something else than just another hack 'n slash that doesn't really bring the genre to the next level. I think the only way people would've been happy with the game would've been if the gameplay system was (almost) as deep as Heavenly Sword's. Now it's, as I already said, pretty much just Champions of Norrath or any other PS2 (or even pre-PS2) hack 'n slash in HD.
I'm sure that's enough for fans of the genre, but the gaming press is and HAS obviously demolished the game in their reviews because of the "short-comings" I've listed before.

Bad reviews? Famistu gave it 31/40.
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (Sony): 7, 8, 8, 8 - (31/40)
Which is not bad at all. Average. But not bad.

it is one of those titles that was 'cool' to bash. I think it is underrated. maybe the very first pics that weren't supposed to come out had something to do with it? although I can't imagine that since the final game looks really good.

31/40 from Famitsu is not "average". It's a good score.
Still, Famitsu is one of the few gaming magazines/sites that gave it a decently good score. Only two sources have given it a score over 8/10 or 80/100 and the rest are 4s, 5s & 6s. That's not too good.
The averaga score for the game is 60/100 (Source: GameRankings.com), that's even worse than the average score both of the PSP Untold Legend games have.

SOE is one of the leaders in online gaming and probably solutions. even if they have a hiccup, that doesn't render them any less capable.

SOE is one of the leaders in online gaming and probably solutions. even if they have a hiccup, that doesn't render them any less capable. Looking at the non-feature rich system and an extremely bad first impression, at least with this particular title. I dont think it is too far fetched for people to be turned off to some degree.

You can do that, but it still doesn't negate my statement. Even if Famitsu (and a couple of others) have given the game a decenlty good score, it doesn't mean it hasn't gotten a lot more bad scores. Famitsu's scores don't just make the other reviews disappear. Of course you can trust Famitsu over all of the others, but generally the game has gotten bad reviews, and that's what I said. I didn't say which reviews were right and which wrong.

I think it's a given you have to play one somewhat dicey game on launch until the good stuff comes out.
I played Genji 2 to the end, I've done my time, now it's your turn. Hack'n'slash away.

lol, I just fed a crave for "Disaster Report", while it won't win any graphics of the year awards, it was a suprisingly good game that has a tangible air intensity to it where I am actually afraid that the ground under me is gonna fall out and any aftershocks that rumbled through the controller made me literally jump.
