View Full Version : Groups/Musicians Who Deserve More Recognition

If someone comes in here and says something like AFI I am going to shit. Don't be retarded.

Perfume Tree:
Ambient electronica, uses heavy guitar progressions to an interesting effect. The singer sings with a sort of aboriginal inflection, although her lyrics are often hard to understand.

"Paradise" from their album "The Sun's Running Out" is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard.

The Flaming Lips get a lot more recognition than a lot of other bands. There's always interviews with them in magazines.

Any band in the post-rock genre deserve a lot more recognition than they get, most of the bands don't get any. For some reason it's a genre that the media doesn't seem to care about.

Apart from that, I'm not really sure. Most of the stuff I listen to is from various underground scenes so I dunno if they're particularly bothered about mass recognition.

Pretty much most of the post rock scene, Neutral Milk Hotel, Secret Machines, Ratatat, Boards of Canada, Of Montreal, and a few others I cant really think of at the minute.

Umphrey's McGee.

Six members, each one incredibly good at what they do. Their live show in unbelievable. They're also the world's best cover band in a way. They play Van Halen better than Van Halen ever did.

Here are 2 excellent live videos..

Do you mean recognition from critics or from consumers?

Bo Bim, C-Clamp, D+, Old Time Relijun, DJ Format, Drive Like Jehu, Eagles of Deathmetal, Red Sparowes, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, Gruvis Malt, Grand Buffet, Gang of Four, The Magnetic Fields, Magnet, Rustic Overtones, Ween...that's just naming a few. I'm sure Boggy'll have a million more that I didn't name.

Off of the top of my head, Jimmy Eat World and Modest Mouse.
EDIT: I just thought of a few more: Punchline, Aqualung, Cassino, Northstar, Alexi Murdoch, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

More or less every band in my playlist.
Though they may deserve more recognition, I don't think it would be very good for them.
I will name, however, Stijn van Cauter. The man's a musical genius.

Don't just post a list of obscure bands. Nobody's going to look them up that way. Pick a good bamd and give some info. What kind of music do they play? What's so good about them?

I'm kinda hoping people will become interested and listen to them, not just read the name in a list that means essentially nothing.

John Butler Trio are pretty good
I saw them open for Phil Lesh like 2 years ago. I remember it was very interesting, but I've only heard them that once, and I was not in my right state of mind (being at a Dead show, for all intents and purposes). I should check him out again.

John Butler, Junior Brown (check out the bonaroo thread), rory Gallagher deserves alot more recognition, hes probably one the best blues players acoustic or electric that ever lived.

Also Johnny Winter, and he's still alive and everything.

People only know "Good News..." when that is regarded as one of their worst albums.
I remember when that album came out and I bought "The Moon And Antarctica" on the spur of the moment at Target. Best record I've bought like that ever.

Zappa is amazing, but he is also amazingly dead. Not much chance for more recognition now... :(

Here, I think J.T. Bruce fits this topic well. I found this guy on Jamendo (http://www.jamendo.com), a free music website. He is best described as progressive rock, I think. His latest album "The Dreamers Paradox," available in its entirety free of charge at either Jamendo (http://www.jamendo.com) or his personal website, Subject Ruin (http://www.subjectruin.net), has captured my imagination. It's almost entirely instrumental; only the last song has a thought provoking monolog in it. There are reoccurring musical themes throughout the songs which make it feel like the music is telling a story with reoccurring characters or settings. I strongly recommend this album, give it a try. It's free under the creative commons license, so you really have nothing to lose.

Also, take a look at his animation "The Juicehead Galaxy Lounge" on his page. I thought it was pretty cool.

Here are just a few that I care to mention.
They are in specifically non-alphabetical order.

Daedelus
I always list Daedelus when I get a chance.
I always say that his music is imaginative, energetic and generally wonderful.
So without further ado...
Daedelus's music is imaginative, energetic and generally wonderful.
Here is the video for one of my favorite songs of his.
Sundown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAAy1XDp1Xw)
And here are some more songs:
'Like Clockwork Springs', 'Impending DOOM (feat. MF Doom)', 'Just Briefly', 'Adventuress', 'Taking Wing', 'Something Bells' and a collaboration by Prefuse 73 entitled 'Busy Signal (Make You Go Bombing Mix)'.
Also, I made a critically acclaimed music video of his song 'Soulful Of Child'.
(Those critics being my highschool media teacher and coursemates.)

cLOUDDEAD
Dose One, Odd Nosdam and Why? (who appears later in this list for his other music.)
Their first album compiled of six two-song records sounds closer to post-avant-hip-hop than anything I've ever heard.
Their second album is surreal bliss ...hop.
Check out their songs 'Cloud Dead Number Five (2)', 'Teen Keen Skip' and 'Pop Song' (first on the album 'Ten', maybe let it surprise you with amazement as it did I.)

Subtle
A blend of post-rock and avant-hop I guess, but significantly different from cLOUDDEAD, despite having Dose One as a frontman (a fair amount of crossover surrounds him actually.)
I really don't know how to describe this music other than alternative to everything including itself.
'The Mercury Craze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5HVRe7UDuc)' is addictive!
And 'I Love L.A' is wonderful and mystic.

Why?
Before Why? I didn't realise that alternative Pop was ever this beautiful and ecstatic!
The thing that sparked it for me was the video for 'Dumb Hummer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGadI5sIJZg)'.
I also love 'Yo Yo Bye Bye', 'The Hoofs', 'Gemini (Birthday Song)', and 'Ferriswheel'.

Fog
Alternative Post Indie is all I can think of to describe this music.
About half of his songs are more abstract soundscapes than I can care for, but the traditional songs he makes are etched in my mind as an anytime soundtrack to remember.
Those songs include 'Can You Believe It?', 'Pneumonia', 'Moon Repellent (feat. Dose One)'.

Ra
French Grunge-Electro is the best I can come up with.
Noisy, abrasive and SO EXCELLENT!
One of my favorite music videos is 'Ev.Panic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utv2xnQ8JWo)'.
Some other great songs of his are 'Dr Murkewerkdichliebe', 'Plantinum Dust', 'Human Saw Tool' and 'High Point'.

Animal Collective
From the instant I heard 'Sweet Road' on the radio one night, I assumed this group were going to mean something special to me, and now I know for sure.
Their album 'Feels' is the album I primarily associate with my own creativity.
I've already used the same words to describe other artist/groups, but I need to say that Animal Collective make some of the most psychotically ecstatic and blissful music ever!
Songs such as 'Grass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqvBoFpgXQA)', 'Turn Into Something (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG-lmhl7ojg)' and 'We Tigers' are what I have in mind here.
Other amazing songs I need to list are 'The Purple Bottle', 'Winter's Love' and 'Loch Raven' (for slowly drifting back down to earth.)

The Boredoms
You know that stuff I described about Animal Collective?
Well it applies to The Boredoms too (now 'The V∞redoms' apparently.)
Their 'Vision Creation Newsun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHJ6zUXunqk)' album is a spiral of tribal energy, and the song 'Seadrum' is impossibly stunning!
Playing live. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f25Ns3PignE)

Boards Of Canada
I love Boards Of Canada.
It's like they translate emotion into audio.
Some to most songs are so nostalgic, yet of no specific time in particular.
Other's have an atmospheric stretch beyond a dreamscape state.
While the rest are just fun to listen to.
And these are all of the above.
'Chromakey Dreamcoat', 'Hey Saturday Sun', 'Happy Cycling', 'Everything You Do Is A Baloon', 'Turquoise Hexagon Sun', 'Music Is Math' and of course the sunlit waterdrop beauty that is 'Dawn Chorus'.

Here's a bonus song suggestion!
Listen to the Boards Of Canada remix of cLOUDDEAD's 'Dead Dogs Two'.
It's perhaps one of my favorite songs of all time.
Their Beck remix is also amazing! ('Broken Drum')

Keller Williams.

He's been around since the late 90's, and he's very talented. When he covers songs, he makes them completely his own (more than any artist I've ever seen). For instance, his covers of Shakedown Street by Grateful Dead and All Along the Watch Tower (in which he somehow incorporates Stairway, then vocally apologizes).

His original songs are great too. Freeker By the Speaker, Chillin Like a Villain, and I Could Drink a Case of You are awesome. He's a one man jam-band who loops during live shows, on the spot. He's really amazing, and doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

String Cheese Incident can fall into this category, somewhat, but I don't like them as much.

Yeah Seahorse, how's that for "modern music sucks"? ;)

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife is a brilliant album all the way through.

Brand New - They could of easily of been dismissed as an "emo" band until the Devil and God are Raging Inside Me came out. This too is an amazing album all the way through.

and lastly. AFI.

Just kidding, I love AFI though. But they have plenty recognition in the music industry and elsewhere.

Also add Refused to my list. Not enough people know about that amazing band, and they don't get recognized like they should. The Shape of Punk to Come was just that, and a masterpiece at that.

I was going to say Brand New as well, but their last album got lots of air play on tv, and people have just kinda forgot about them.

and about AFI, as a band, they are widely recognized, but I think DU deserves more recognization. People just shrugged it off because they wanted and expected STS part 2, and it was a whole different beast. You can't blame them though, STS is one of my all-time fav albums.

I really like Five For Fighting, I dont know how popular they are over in other countries but you never hear anything about them here and you cant find a Cd anywhere, and I love their music, Its nice and easy to listen to and he actually sings about things worth singing about. I quite like the song Superman That one was popular for a while and I think he was then labled as a one hit wonder, But there are heaps of good songs, 100 years is also a good song, its about how a person lives their 100 years of life. etc etc

Is everyone talking about FRANK Zappa or some band called Zappa?
Frank Zappa needs more recognition for his insane and immortal musical work. He was a thing that will happen only in a century.

Anyway, my call is DEVIL DOLL.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil_doll

No, NOT that singer, the band led by charismatic, faustian, mystic MR. DOCTOR. I say the guy is a modern music genius, I kid you not. It is a great injustice that this act has never been noted highly. Everytime I hear his music I feel the same as I feel when I listen to Beethoven's or Mozart's things. Breathtaking. I am fancied just by the personality of MR. DOCTOR. Such devotion to ART that must HURT. The music speaks for itself, when I put on, for example, The Girl Who Was Death... I have to listen to it through. It is a sin to stop it before the very end. The mastery within this album is that you just cannot stop listening to it. Each part seduces you, leads to another turmoil of amazing patterns and structures, just when you are about to take a break another sequence of this beautiful perfume just KILLS YOU.

Aah, I could talk forever about this Master of Art. His first album is by far their greatest. If you do not want to buy it, get it somehow. Just listen.

John Zorn? Not really. John Zorn is more in the realm of Avant-Garde Jazz, though he also does a lot of classical compositions.

Street Dogs (www.street-dogs.com ): If you like irish punk, you will love these guys. A former member of drop kick murphies is in this band. I saw them live, and they are one of my new favorite bands.

Jupiter Sunrise(www.jupitersunrise.net ): They are bound to have a lot more recognition if they keep making music. They are considered "pop punk," but not like Fallout Boy or Yellowcard, although most of those listeners would love them. Most of their songs have a positive tone. The lyrics are great. The music is catchy. Its a band anyone could love... even my parents.

I don't know how unknown they are elsewhere, but Kings of Leon don't get the recoginition they deserve in my oppinion. The singer's voice can be a turn off, but they are an incredibly unique band of the new millenium, though I guess they manage it by trying to be an ol' rockabilly band or something halfway there. Regardless, they certainly deserve a lot more then I've seen them get.

John Frusciante's solo work transcends anything he does with the Chili Peppers in my oppinion, and yet somehow no one knows it. Look into it, a very diverse body of work but some fucking amazing songs.
