I imported the Japanese version and have been playing it for the last week.
The gameplay is as good as ever with a really balanced fighting system and thousands of moves. The graphics are amazing, much better than I expected from seeing videos and screenshots. The customization is great and it'll take forever to unlock all the items.

I know that an online mode wouldn't work due to the lag, but I do think they need to somehow get an online mode for Virtua Fighter 6. I don't know anyone else who's played virtua fighter and unlike tekken it's not easy to just pick up and play, so I'm stuck with the single player which is great but an online mode would make this game perfect.

There are some that do come out on tuesdays, I have seen this. But typically I see games ship on tuesday and release on shelves wednesday. Could have to do with geography? Who knows.

LaLiLuLeLo
02-21-2007, 06:30 AM
If VF4 is anything to go by I doubt it. And that's probably a good thing. I read the character backgrounds in the manual and they are riiidiculous. The only thing cornier was their voice acting.

I just got home with it and logged about an hour or two on it. First impressions:

- Graphics are gorgeous. You can see the leather details in Sarah's 2nd costume, wrinkles on fingers, semi destructable environments...it just looks great. Nice job AM2.

- Sound is sweet going through a nice 5.1 DD system. There are some take down moves to create a HUGE bottom end bass thump that damn near knocked me off my chair.

- I played though around 30 matches in two of the arcade locations in Quest mode. My record is 29-1. I got my ass handed to me by Lau Chan inmy last fight. I WILL get my revenge.

The fighting is as fluid and complex as you have come to expect with the VF series. I played Sarah and she has some new moves that I cannot consistently execute yet...but I will get there.

I was very impressed with the AI learning repeat moves. If I consistanly used for example, PPPK more than 2 or 3 times in row I stated to get blocked and major league countered. Lau has some crazy ass grabs that just took me out of the fight. I need to learn to block and counter better myself.

The game runs in 780p and the inititial install takes about 4 - 5 minutes to complete the first time you play the game. After that, load times are very fast for the most part.

The are a TON of items to collect. So far I have gotten Sarah's blue earings, red hair and yellow shades. I also got around 5 or 6 emblems.

enuf typing. good game - must buy if you like the VF series or fighting games in general.

It upscales to 1080p, its native is 720p. PS3 games just tend to advertise what the native resolution is on the box vs. the max scaled resolution. I believe its the other way around for X360 games as i remember Lost Planet being native 720p, but it advertised 1080i/p on the box.

The manual is intimidating.. so many moves and combos.

A story mode should be put in... VF has never had a story mode, and that is probably one of the reasons it doesn't do aswell as Tekken or Soul Calibur.

Anyways, there is some improvements over VF4, and the AI is pretty smart. And graphics are niceeeee... I'd still like a story mode tho, that is one of my biggest gripes with this series.

When i went to play it for the first time it wants to load data, so i let it do that. Then my video went from 1080i to 720p to 1080i and back to 720p. It played well though :) I wish i could re center the screen as i can't see the "press start" on top and some of the outer edges are cut off. The x and y axis settings are greyed out though, is there a way to center the screen in the PS3 menus that im missing?

It sounds like your TV. It might be set to zoom. You should set it to full/normal (whatever its called on your tv). It should fix it then.

I have never had that experience ever lol. In Toronto or in London now. I know for fact I got GTA SA, GTA VC, GT3, MGS2, FF XII, FF VII, FF VIII, FF IX, FF X all the days they were released.

Spent my first hour with VF5 and here's my thoughts:

Best looking fighter released! (Great visuals, but not jaw dropping)
Silky smooth frame rate and animation (Would love to see 2 experts battle)
Incredible combat system (I'm fairly new to VF titles...)
Terrible sound effects & voice acting/commentator
Lack of online does make the title feel empty (I'm was a big DOA4 online player)
Lack of story and character development is a bit disappointing. (Tekken & DOA have great endings!)

Overall I would definitely agree with other's recommendations that only VF or fighting purist should give this a purchase. I really wanted to just purchase a new PS3 title, but I'm having a little buyer’s remorse because of the lack of online play and I'm fairly new to the VF series. Perhaps after I spend some more time with the title and really appreciate the fighting engine my opinion will change... I would give this title an 8 based on my initial experience, but if the title had online multiplayer it would easily be a 9.0 or above based on replay value. I don't mean to run the online gripe into the ground, but really it's unforgivable in the next-gen. That's my 2 cents...

I'm not a big fighter but when I do play fighters, I rock Virtua Fighter, so I might wait for this one to go down in price or something, but I'll be renting it this Friday as well.

Online for such a tactical fighter like VF just doesn't work because of the lags. That's also what the devs said and so they didn't include online modi. (don't mention the DOA Online modi, because DOA is not a BIT tactical :P )
In VF every millisecond counts and decides between wether you lose or win! ^^

This is why I never became a hardcore gamer. Some of these combos are impossible even with an arcade stick. ^^; I can't seem to get past the 4th round in arcade mode. Need more training in the dojo....

Nameless
02-22-2007, 03:05 PM
^^ That's BS IMO!
Only the true hardcore count frames so the hardcore could still do the arcade thing and the rest of us would at least have the option to play online. Honestly after playing DOA Ultimate & DOA4 I may not even buy Tekken if there's no online support. I don't have any friends that are into fighters so I really have no competition except for the computer. If my friends do decide to try a fighter it's always a one sided match... I'm sure not every gamer or VF purist will agree, but the other 80% of gamers do want online even if there's lag.

Not true... I got VF the day it came out from a local store called Video Games Plus. (I live in the GTA)

Check the small brand stores first, they usually get them the day it comes out.

online+lag =/= fun.
Although I would have appreciated leader boards or achievements or something like that.

When people say this it makes me think that they havent played an online fighter. I have played a host of fighters online and yes there is some occaisions where I join a laggy room but for the most part I have no problem with playing online fighters smoothly (Hell I even play Europeans very well).

The only game that I really had a time with was Guilty Gear XX, man that was a good fighter.

Anyways I have had the title for a while and have quit playing it, there is simply no reason to pick it up anymore. Ill keep it for when my bro comes over or something like that. Im willing to bet that in a couple of years Sega will make this title with online play, when they milk the franchise for VF5 Extreme or whatever nonsense.

But until then Im waiting on Tekken or dare I hope for another Powerstone.

I would love to get it, but seeing as how 99% of the time I would be playing AI, I can't justify spending 60 bucks on it. I WISH it had online, then I'd get it no problem.
