Im my marketing class our teacher tried to tell us that commerical was targeting the gay demographic. To this day I just dont see the connection he was trying to make.

The only thing that comes to mind is the premiere date of that commercial. It officially first appeared on the air during the Ellen "coming out" episode. Of course, the problem with associating it with that alone is the fact that it was one of many commercials around that time period which were following the example of Seinfeld by making "commercials about nothing."

Ok here's his reasoning:

They can't put an obvious gay ad on TV, it would up set their family target market. However they can make it appeal to the gay demograph. Look at whats going, its two guys....going furniture shoping together....in a tiny car...it doesnt get more gay then that. However Mom and Dad don't see it that way, they see two struggling college kids looking for junk to fill their dorm. It doesnt offend them.

VW admits it too. It's cleaver marketing tactics.

I never thought of that commercial having anything to do with being gay when I watched it. Even after reading the above posts I still don't see it that way. And its pretty obvious that they were not going furniture shopping either. It seemed that they just came across that chair while driving around.

It's very well known that VW is heavily marketed to the gay demograph. We just dont see it because we dont read up gay publications/life style magazines. Do a simple google search for "VW gay marketing or VW gay advertising." or visit www.gaybusinessworld.com, you will be very surprised that many family brands also market to gays. Ford and Subaru do it too, but VW/Audi are especially big on it.
