The Departed was the big winner, taking home four Oscars out of five nominations, winning for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Editing. This was a bittersweet victory for Scorsese, who has failed to win until now with such movies as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and The Age of Innocence.

Early favorite Babel, the Drama winner at the Golden Globes, was silenced with only one victory for Best Original Score. Little Miss Sunshine, tagged as a potential dark horse like Crash in the previous year, won two Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and a surprising upset win for Alan Arkin in Supporting Actor.

Best Actor and Actress went as expected with Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren scooping up well-deserved victories.

Dreamgirls, with eight nominations, only won two Oscars for Sound Mixing and Best Supporting Actress with Jennifer Hudson and she also gets props for the best speech of the night.

Other big winners include the exotic and unusual Pan's Labyrinth, which won three Oscars for Art Direction, Makeup, and Cinematography, giving it the second-most wins behind Departed. Documentary and Original Song went to An Inconvenient Truth.

Personally, I think they got it right with Picture and Director. It wasn't Scorsese's best movie, but it definitely resembles the unlimited talent he has as both a director and an artist. This was a long overdue victory for him.

Surprisingly, I agree with most winners.

^Ditto on Scorsese. About darn time. The Departed was a superb movie! It already resides beside Goodfellas in my collection.

Still want to see Pan's Labyrinth...

you either haven't got many films or your collection isn't in alphabetical order

I'm thinking the latter on this one. I've got about fifteen movies between Departed and Goodfellas.

I just wanted Scorsese to finally win the directing award. And having The Departed take Best Picture was great as well.

I'm glad Marty won, and I fucking loved the Departed. Just happy that Babel didn't win, I thought it completely and utterly sucked.

I was hoping Children Of Men would win best cinemtography, but after seeing the clips of a nominee and winner, I'm not surprised it didn't.

I too am glad that Martin Scorsese won.
Presented by Francis For Coppola, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg!

I really liked that look at America through cinema also.

Peter O'Toole should of won for the love of all that is good and decent.

The Oscars continue to be more excruciating than you can possibly imagine. The sheer arrogance, elitism and pompousity that radiates from these scumbags is ridiculous.

I don’t think The Departed should have won best picture, it simply wasn’t. Even with the big budget and top name actors, it turned out to be a luke warm Scorsese movie. What I think happened was they gave into peer pressure and just let the man win his Oscars because he hasn’t won one yet. (Pretty much the main reason you’re all saying why he should have won.) It’s suppose to be best picture, not hey, this Scorsese hasn’t won yet and people are breathing down our necks so lets give it to him!

You're probably in the minority on that front, of Departed being a weaker Scorsese effort. I was a little surprised Sunshine had picked up momentum and was actually in a position to win Best Picture. That would have been an awful pick, personally. A nice little movie and certainly deserving of the two Oscars it did pick up, but best movie of the year? That would have been about as bad as Driving Miss Daisy winning over Do the Right Thing in 1989.

And I did a count. Of the movies between Departed and Goodfellas, I have 24.

I think we all know who the real big winner of the Oscars was this year.

Well Scorsese did win for 'Best Direction' as well as The Departed winning for 'Best Picture'.
And the directing was flawless, so, you know...

I didn't see most of the other nominees, so I'm not able to compare them all.
But a lukewarm Scorsese film is still an excellent film.

Not as good as Little Miss Sunshine though. Sunshine was better acted and written. The characters had more depth. The film overall was better.

It pisses me off when people say sunshine was a nice little film. Like people continue to try to demean it or something. I personally think it’s a shame sunshine didn’t win. For every point someone makes for The Departed, I can one up it with sunshine.

Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed The Departed quite well. It was actually my third favorite film of the year. With Sunshine in first.

Well, what it means is the popular movies don't aspire to be art and the art movies don't necessarily try to be popular (although Departed did make about 140 million in this country at the box-office). The $200-million movies aren't really made with any care for the story or for the characters and what you end up with is a lot of explosions and pyrotechnics for eye candy.
