Ok, to start things off, i have never owned an Xbox nor a Xbox 360, although to be fair im looking into getting a 360. Secondly, i only own a Wii and PS2 right now. So, now that you can see that i dont really have a reason to be biased, ill begin.
When playing Halo 2 last year with a bunch of roommates, we had an absolute blast playing with 3-4 people on the same console playing multiplayer online. While playing Gears, it allows u to bring 2 people online at once from the same console as well. Now, certainly, in the last few years, these have probably been the biggest hits for Xbox. Now, while not all Xbox/360 games allow u to bring 2-4 people on the same console online, it certainly is a big deal to me that at least the biggest hit games allow this.
Now, where is Sony in all this? (Yes, Nintendo deserves a kick as well, but i dont expect much from them as far as online goes right now). Are there games in development (besides Army of Two) that will allow for this awesome feature? IMO, it needs to be in more games, and not just shooters. To me, there is nothing worse then having a great online multiplayer game (Lost Planet? or Socom?), and having a few buddies over and having to trade the controller around. Id like to have my friends join in on the experience at the same time, if only one other.
How much trouble do you think it is to implement this? And what are your views on this? Are there some games you'd like to point me to for Sony's console that have this ability? And of course, i realize this isnt JUST Sony's fault, but certainly they could influence some games to have this feature, and to my knowledge they havent exactly done a great job of leading the pack in this department.

On-Line modes and Co-Op rule. Split screen for any game sucks a monkeys sweaty ballz. I want on-line for a lot more games too, but I figure just give it time. Gran Turismo will most likely be on-line. I am hoping like hell that Lair has on-line modes. Wipeout is coming, that will hopefully have on-line(I will riot if it does not!!!!). That Fatal Interim game will most likely have on-line. What Sony needs is a really good on-line RPG made for consoles. Like World of War Craft or some such. I have had dreams of Dave Jaffe making an on-line RPG like WoW. He has great design sensibilities and would do a great job IMO.

HEH! Ok... Yea, Motorstorm does come to mind though, as it would totally rock having 2 friends on the same console online.

I totally agree with you. Even on my 57" TV, when I am playing online, I want to screen to be all me and what i am doing.
I think the idea of going online with a friend is great, if I could afford to have two HDTVs set up next to each other.

Well of course u want it to be focused on u, but playing with friends on the same screen can be quite fun as well. I wonder how many of yall have played in this way on a good game, like GOW or Halo 2.

I think your making an excellent point and its something that Sony really needs to incorporate but its also something I look for them to include in coming titles. Sony is still rather freshman like in the online console arena and its more of an issue for devs to include the option than it is for Sony to.

what games could it be done without split-screen? Whether its too invasive or not, there is nothing better then having four buddies tear things up on the same console online, AT THE SAME TIME.
Yes, its imperfect, but it works and like i said, its incredibly fun in the games that have it.

What is possibly wrong with the option of splitscreen though, I think thats the main point. I personally agree that Im not big on split screen but many people love it (like my partner at work that plays GoW with his kids). I dont see how any two player game wouldnt benefit from a split screen home mp or online mp.
MoSt not having split screen is kind of ridiculous. I mean if my bro comes over and he wants to race me he needs to go home and play me online, that simply sucks.

If anything, why NOT include the feature? Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it is big for those that will use it. I used to have friends simply sit and WATCH me play Socom, i cant imagine how cool it would be to have him be able to join up with me and play along side me.

don't get me wrong, i think it should definitely be included... i personally don't like split screen and so in this area i'm bound to be biased ;) but playing games like Rub-a-dub or Balders gate like games, it would be ideal

It's not as simple as just flipping a switch and supporting it. For example in SOCOM... SOCOM 3 and onwards used a streaming system that allowed levels to be larger than can fit into memory. To support splitscreen, you'd either need to reduce the level size or go the Gears route and force the players to be in the same area.

Gears online isnt like (or are you talking co-op??) that and as long as the gameplay is linear I dont see the "same area" being an issue. For more open type games though I believe you have a good point.

You can play with friends online too whats the big deal? I enjoy playing with friends when their over my house too, but I wouldn't want to play online split screen with them thats just retarted. we have more fun gaming amongst ourselves then we ever could online at the same house on the same TV. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but not EVERYONE can afford to have multiple PS3's or 360's, nor does everyone have friends that all make the next-gen jump at the same time. Nor does everyone have the ability to have multiple high-speed internet connections without using a router, which is pretty redonculous when in a big house and having to string large amounts of wire to different TVs and systems. Your idea is very flawed. Especially since most routers simply split the connection, and with multiple online games going on, that can cause quite a bit of lag.
Being in the same house using ur idea would be about the same as having them at their own house. Not exactly the social gaming atmosphere im looking for.

The point i'm trying to make is that when my friends are over screw online! its much more fun playing 4 player split screen offline talking smack to each other in person. You bring up a valid point about the expense, I'm not gona fork out $90.00 for 3 new headsets.

Well, if you can talk smack to each other in person while also playing with other people online, that means double the fun to me. You can use one headset to talk smack to anyone your buddies kill.

The point of online/LAN play to me is so that you don't have to deal with split screen to deal with. I have played split screen killzone and halo2 and whether it's split horizontally or vertically, split screen sucks.
That said. I don't think it's impossible to implement, but there obviously will be some downgrade to quality for split screen gaming. If we are not seeing this downgrade now, expect to see it later on in the generation.

ahhh, but see, they also provided the ability to have 3 other friends yell "faggot" at different people at the same time on the same console. Thus, less alone gaming, and more 2-4 buddies with you gaming. Wording is horrible, but meh.

They were obsessed with pushing it down people's throats because it's a constant revenue stream. No matter what anyone says, LIVE is not the innovation microsoft claims it to be. They took a bunch of features already included on PCs, put them together, then they slapped a warm and fuzzy name on it.
Ofcourse they have added a fair bit to it since then, I'll admit that, but I hate the word "subscription". And all those other features I really don't care for. If Sony implemented them, and we know it will be for free, I still wouldn't care for them....I'm not the kind of person who enjoys making friends with people I will most likely never meet through a game. People act as if it's a "lifestyle", but to me it's a bunch of supersillious crap fed to the socially inept.

thats a pretty bleak outlook on gaming as a way of being social. I enjoy playing with friends online and meeting new ones online as well. The only difference being u dont see them in the real world. But, i know quite a few people that have had big get-togethers with clanmates. Its the best thing though, because when u sign-on, u game with them and thats it. That is really the purpose of that friendship, u have a mutual interest in something very specific. It can make a decent game ALOT more enjoyable in my mind.
And whether Live is innovative or not, its still the best thing offered on consoles as far as online goes, IMO.

Yes, they allow u to bring a guest onto ur Xbox Live account for split-screen multiplayer online. The maps are small though, 4 vs 4.

Tribes let you do this way back when PS2 first went online, so it's just a matter of what game you're playing. Ratchet & Clank 3 (and I'm guessing Deadlocked too) also let you do this.
When it comes to games like SOCOM or even Resistance though, stealth is a huge deal (which is why split-screen doesn't work for SOCOM), and so is being able to see even the most miniscule details, so there are more games I'd rather have to myself as-is than splitscreen online. If I'm showing my friend an online game I'd rather just take turns to be honest.

Dude man, Motorstorm and Resistance were launch titles. That's why you don't see split screen online mode. But second gen games should be doing that. Do don't worry. Look at the first Halo. The first Halo was a launch title, AND IT DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ONLINE. So just be patient.

Thats fine and good, but like ive mentioned, whether its used by alot of people or not, id like to be able to use split-screen multiplayer for just about every game. Socom included. If i have a buddy over, im not going to play in a clan war, im going to a pubby... not everyone plays serious 24/7 on SOCOM, believe me, i have played it since the first pre-cheating.

I agree with <3frosty, we should have more split-screen online multi-player FPS and racers. I wouldn't mind sharing a 30" with a few friends while taking on foes online. :)
However this isn't an issue Sony can really address, you need to call out the developers.
