View Full Version : Technology in football
This is something that has been talked about for a long time now, and I was just wondering what your opinions were for using goal-line technology and video replays in football.
Personally, I think it's a good idea. "Bad refereeing decisions" are getting a lot more coverage lately, and I feel that if we had video replays, then that would clear up any confusion. When I say bad refereeing decisions, I'm not blaming the referees, I'm just using the phrase, because every week a manager is complaining about a decision that has gone against them.
You can't expect referees to catch EVERYTHING, they're only human. And taking 30 seconds out to check whether a goal has been scored, or to confirm if something else has happened in the game, I don't see why there is so much opposition to it.
Football is pretty much the only sport where technology isn't used now. In cricket, video replays are used when there is a close decision for a run-out. In American Football, the referees get 60 seconds (I think) to look at a replay and analyse the situation, and the same goes for Rugby.
Anyway, I'll stop ranting on and open it up to you guys.

That's cool you weren't ranting, that's call opening the debate ;)
As much as bad decisions sometimes come to bite me in the ass, I think it's just part of football now.
It's a strong tradition and other than fucking pussies who jump around the place with every small touch, not much has changed in football and I am sure many people and veterans alike would like to carry on with it's simple roots.
Use tactics and defeat the opposition with all means necessary.
Bad decisions just become another challenge to overcome and although annoying adds so much to football.
It would be boring if every debatable position was paused, looked over for 20seconds and the match carried on. *YAWN*
Where is the excitement? I'll tell you where: No-where.
Since we are on topic, I want a referee with balls who yellow cards all those annoying players that surround the ref after EVERY decision. Shut up and get on with it!
If one referee just yellow cards them all, no-one will do it again.
I also hate divers.
FA needs to look at divers after match and give them a penalty. Either a match ban or cash penalty.
I know I am kind of contradicting myself saying "human things" make football fun and you can consider diving "part of the fun" but that's is just dishonesty and annoying as fuck.
The referees don't make bad decision on purpose but football players dive on purpose.
The other day I can't remember who it was but he tripped and referee gave the foul and he was like "no no, I tripped!" That was fucking amazing.
We need more people like that.
In closing: Keep it the way it is. We don't need to slow football down [even more] and don't want to distract the flow of the "human like" game with technology and pauses every time a decision is needed.
You brought up a few good points that I forgot about, one being divers/play-actors. This is the part of the game that makes me hate football sometimes.
Well, maybe that's being a bit harsh, but you get what I mean. You see people go down holding their face when they've been brushed accidentally, or when two players confront eachother and the handbags come out.
I'd just love to see video replays come in just so that the ref can look at these kind of things and send off the play-actor. That would make them look like a proper idiot. It's something that needs to be stamped out of the game.
I agree that if it was used for EVERY SINGLE contentious decision then it would slow the game down and take something away from the game. For the most part, referees get the decisions right. It's just that too often, there will be one decision that turns a match, and also there's a lot of money riding on matches now.
Perhaps something could be done like in American Football where you're only allowed to contest a certain amount of decisions?
i prefer not to have them, it slows the game down and i like the banter that goes on afterwards, the "it was never a goal"

Even though it's annoying when it happens to the team you support, it's also fun to see it happen to those you hate...

Eh. I don't envy the referee's jobs. Prolly one of the toughest in existance.

He's not the worst, Mark Clattenburg (sp?) and Rob Styles are the worst IMO. They both look like they're doing everything for the cameras.
Edit: West Ham are bottom HAHAHAHAHAH!!! Come on Charlton and Watford!! :-D
