Well the term middleware implys that its a sort of user game engine. Like the ut3 engine. Designed for others to make games with. Well thats what I thought it meant. And after the things I have seen laterly I really dont see why its not possible to be realtime.

If Im wrong please dont shoot me. It hurts.

It's basically what looks like a high res version of a FF12 video, with a city full of air ships, only running real time on a PS3....

Or is it....? :)

It seems to be middleware for playing back video in a game. IF I found the right information...

It's a video playback tool. Which PS3 does anyway.

Nothing to see here, move along...

I was looking on B3D and it's a sound processing tool.

Ah, I guess the description was wrong at Gametrailers. CRI are the guys who make Sofdec and ADX. Nothing to see here :(

Those looking to be legitimately amazed go have a look at the CryEngine2 GDC demonstration. Keywords; nuclear-explosion, real-time.

(Once again, I must say that anytime I mention something without posting a link it's not because I'm a RAT-BASTARD. It's because I'm currently using my PS3's web browser; so, I can't, you see.)

As a signal processing and compression nut, I'd say it IS interesting, but the problem is that we're watching an over-compressed cam rip... to really judge it, what you'd need is the original, because the HD version of their codec is making some really interesting claims, and some things about their results make me wonder what it is they're doing. I get the impression that they're either using a non-separable transform space (e.g. curvelets?) or using some sort of non-separable edge filtering scheme to drive which bits actually get priority (e.g. covariance characters?). It seems like either solution at low bitrates would exhibit really bad ringing, but I really don't see that. Maybe they're hiding ringing by post-processing on playback or something... but the geek in me is curious.
