While media and gamer attention might be focused on the PlayStation 3, Sony (for now) has higher hopes for the nearly seven year old PlayStation 2 video game system.Actually, PS2 was released on March 4, 2000 in Japan. It's officially more than 7 years old now.
And it still kicks ass like.no.other.

ps1 lived for basically 10 years before it died, ps2 is 7 ATM and going bloody well, it's probably still got a few more years left. the ps3 won't have a problem staying for 10 years.

Yeah, I'm predicting 10-12 years for the PS2. It's not dead yet!

they retired the psone. it didn't actually stop selling. they'll do the same with the ps2. just retire it in 2009 (or 10?).

I think later like Seph said. PS1 was 10 years on the manufacturing lines. And PS2? I mean.. at this stage the PS1 was showing signs of slowdown, the PS2 not so much. 12 years really doesn't sound that off!

i think they will retire the ps3 in 2012-13.

^? Maybe if they bring in a replacement quickly, I'd think the PS3 would come off the manu lines in like 2014 - 2016. PS2 off in 2010 or beginning of 11 I say.

alright, did seem a bit too optimistic, maybe late 2011.

I wouldn't be suprised if Sony wanted a first-mover advantage next round.
Considering they CPU is already pretty much mapped out, Blu-Ray will easily scale to 200GB, they really only need to figure out the GPU. They will be especially happy if they can keep the same programming model.
Not to say the PS3 won't last long, but I think the transition to the next gen will be far faster and smoother.

@Garf - lol! I got confused because you have PS3 there ;)
Maybe 2013 for PS2, we'll see soon (not really that soon lol...)!
That'd be quite a feat though. Anywhere in 10 to 13 years, for one single piece of hardware? These things only get one revision in their lifetime, and.... 10+ years?
Playstation deserves some props for that.

Well yeah, they stopped manufacturing PS1's at the end of 2006, but I never saw them in stores and there definitely weren't new games, so I see a difference between when they shut down production and when games stop coming out for it. I think by the end of 2008 the PS2 will be completely tapped out, personally. They might manufacture them into 2010 but new games will stop in 2008 I think.

There's not much left after God of War 2 though, but it should sell for awhile just based on people who never bought it yet

lol, ok, i'll clarify:
PS1 - 2006 (12 years)
PS2 - 2013 (13 years)
PS3 - 2019 (13 years) but who knows they may push it to 2020;)

you live in the worlds strongest economy... of corse your not going to see PSones around. go to mexico or poland or some of the former CCCP states. i bet they where on shelfs there. much like PS2 will be in 2010.
