SINGAPORE : The official Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console has finally arrived in Singapore.
This will come as good news to ardent gamers here.
But the honeymoon is over for parallel importers who have been selling grey sets from Japan and Hong Kong at a premium.
Faced with an official retail price of S$799, stores at Lucky Plaza are believed to have slashed prices by more than 30 percent - from over S$1,000 to just about S$700.
Sony launched the PS3 at The Clinic, a hip club at Clarke Quay.
200 lucky Singaporeans were given the opportunity to be the first to buy the official PS3 that comes with a one-year warranty.
The warranty is much coveted because Sony's latest game console comes with many hi-tech features that could prove costly to repair.
Priced at S$799 - the higher spec 60GB Hard Disk Drive version is the cheapest outside of Hong Kong and Japan.
Sony said advanced features like its ability to connect up to seven wireless controllers made it an attractive offering to gamers.
Touted as the most advanced computer system, the PS3 also features Sony's PlayStation Network, which allows users to download a variety of entertainment such as high definition movie and game content from its online portal.
With a powerful Cell processor, the console is also capable of playing Blu-ray disc - the next generation of DVD that Sony is backing.
Sony is hoping to hit the high score with its latest offering.
Tetsuhiko Yasuda, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Asia, said, "I was involved in the development of PlayStation, and we successfully launched PlayStation 1 with 100 million units sold worldwide, and for PlayStation 2 we sold 120 million units. With PlayStation 3 we are targeting approximately 150 to 200 million units sold worldwide."
The consumer electronics giant also released 10 PSP3 game software titles, priced from S$42 to S$92 each.
