IBM announced today a significant step towards PlayStation 3 cost-cutting, as the chip maker announced the production of a 65nm version of the Cell processor.

The Cell launched as a 90nm processor. The 65nm version will be manufactured at IBM’s East Fishkill, New York plant.

IBM created the chip with Sony and Toshiba in a collaboration which began in March 2001. IBM recently began reaching out to game developers to help them harness the Cell's potential.

A Sony exec recently said that a move to a 45nm Cell would occur in late 2008 or early 2009.

The 65nm Cell has been reported in prouction already by Sony's CFO in previous reports. So, the question is whether this press release is a little late in coming, or whether 65nm production on a 'mass' level started up at Nagasaki before it started at Fishkill.

this will only cut the cost of selling PS3 to us. we will not see a price drop. we will not see a price drop untill many componets have been made cheaper.

even if cell cost is cut in half. it still means Sony is selling PS3s at a loss.

when the ram gets cheaper
the RSX gets cheaper
the BR drive gets cheaper
the HDD gets cheaper
the EE+GS is gone

and only whenn ALL of this happens will we see a price drop.. untill then skip out on two cases off beer and two tanks of gas in your Escalade.

if your smart... you can find ways to come up with the "extra" 200usd in one month no problem
