View Full Version : Real-time commentary for FIFA
Football games are bigger than ever before, raking in millions for the likes of EA and Konami. But what does 'next-gen' really mean for football games? Well, less repetitive commentary for a start...
Speaking to CVG recently about the future of football games and their move to next-gen systems, Andrew Wilson, executive producer of football, EA explained, "We ran out of space on the disc with current gen. Last year's FIFA had 26 leagues, 15 thousand players, kits, players, stadiums, audio and music, you just run out of space. The next gen discs have got more space so in the short term we will have much more commentary on our games."
Wilson believes that the online sides of PS3 and 360 are where developers can really take football to a new level. "Looking long term, these consoles are now online. And I would love to think that we can start to pump dynamic commentary into the game on a weekly basis so you never hear the same thing twice.
"But think about competitions. Imagine having commentators popping up to commentate on interactive games. So you're not reliant on commentary from our game anymore, you got someone who gets online and comments every week instead, who then gets a reputation."
Food for thought? Look out for our full interview with Wilson in the coming days where he talks more about the evolution of football, gives his opinions on the age-old rivalry between FIFA and PES and discusses how the crowd will play a bigger part in the performance of your team on the pitch.

What "next gen discs"? HD-DVD isn't going to be used for gaming. Only Blu-ray is in that category as of now.
I don't know what to think, but I doubt EA will take advantage of PS3's Blu-ray in such a significative way that would make all of the other FIFA titles on other platforms seem far inferior. And I just don't see FIFA titles standing out compared to themselves :dur:

I hate when people try to generalize where it makes absolutely NO sense to do so. BD is obviously the only next-gen disc format as far as games go.
Just say what you REALLY mean, man!

I just had a thought. what if in the future, PS3 games will have an advantage due to BD and Cell that devs won't be scared to go the extra mile of trying to make the PS3 version stand out a little. for now, we say they don't want their other 'next-gen' version on X2 look inferior. but if the gap grows along with sales, they may go for it and PS3 may be in slightly ahead that it wouldn't be as much as a problem to make some extras for that version. it may be viewd as a normality in the future to expect somethings more from certain types of games.
just a thought.

Well, it's certainly a BD advantage, who knows how much EA will use this as an advantage.
All I know is I'm glad the PS3 went with BD :cloud9:
P.S. That comment w/ 'next gen discs' was pretty stupid lol, I agree.
P.P.S. Can we get a :cloud9 : smiley but instead of the smiley hugging the cloud9 we get a smiley hugging a PS3?

It's really hard to care for FIFA for me, it's such a dull experience compared to Pro Evolution Soccer.
Even if they say we used 100% of Cell and every KB of space on Blu-Ray, I might...MIGHT raise an eyebrow.
The title of the thread is misleading.
This is more of a "EA Says DVD isn't enough." thread than a "Real time commentary" thread but I think you knew that ;)

Welcome to next-gen ;) :p

I think the bigger the install base and sales of PS3, the more publishers will make an effort for it. I think later on, we'll see more interest put into PS3 games compared to X2 than we saw put into Box compared to PS2.

I only just realized there is a '9' in that cloud. why?

that isn't the point. the point is that they give examples of why they are running out of space and why they appreciate BD. their 'dynamic-commentating' and other 'dynamic' download possibilities are only one example of an immediate use of more space.
The title of the thread is misleading.

I agree. that should've been the title. may the power of the mods fix our mistakes.

I got it... they'll offer a downloadable "voice pack" for the 360, which will take up half your hard drive.

The phrase 'We are on cloud nine' or similar stuff means something like 'we are feeling great' or 'doing great' or etc etc.
You can probably wiki it for more information ;)

thanks. I'll look that up.
On cloud 9
Meaning: A feeling of euphoric exaltation.
Example: Canadian Senate members, once appointed to their patronage positions, feel as though they're on cloud 9.
Origin: Clouds are divided by the U.S. Weather Bureau into classes, and each class is divided into nine types. ‘Cloud nine’ is the cumulo-nimbus cloud that you often see building up in the sky in a hot summer afternoon. It may reach 30,000 to 40,000 feet, so if one is up on ‘cloud nine,’ one is high indeed.
Alternative: The common belief that this came from the US Weather Bureau classification of the 1950's is not true.
The first effort at properly classifying clouds was at the beginning of the 19th century by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck, who classified them in simple terms along Linnaean lines. Then a Quaker businessman, Luke Howard (1772-1864), classified clouds into types such as stratus, cumulus and cirrus. Howard was a near contemporary of the famed artist John Constable. Howard gave several lectures on his system and it is likely that Constable, who was renowned for his landscapes, attended some. Howard's system was expanded and developed into the International Cloud Atlas.
An abridged version of the Atlas came out in 1896 and classified ten types of cloud. Number 9 was the white, fluffy, comfy-looking cumulo-nimbus. Hence to be "on cloud nine" came to symbolise floating free on a downy, white cushion, presumably without a care in the world. Thanks to Phil Sawyer.
