Only a question of when, and if the size will be 80GB, a new one will come with a bigger HDD for sure.
Great thing is you don't need to use Sony's HDDs!

I'm sure down the road when larger HDDs are moving down in price they will decide to package a larger HDD, maybe in 2 or 3 years even.
Unless they want to cut prices faster, but you can balance and do both at the same time too.

Why would you need special SKU when you can change the HD yourself? The next PS3 SKU will contain shrinked Cell but that's all we know ATM.

Highly doubted for a number of reasons.
1) MS has just announced the Elite with a 120 GB HDD. Sony doesn't feel threaten by this in the least (as stated) and it would serve no purpose in raising the HDD size without matching or exceeding the Elite's size.
2) Sony designed the PS3 HDD to be removeable for people to place larger HDDs inside should they choose to.
3) The 60GB just launched in Europe with over 600,000 units sold. That's 600,000 people that would feel slighted if Sony suddenly announced a better unit. This simply does NOT fit in with Sony's plan.

Sony already stated that it doesn't mean they're going to release a 80 GB version, only that they want to have that model number registered just in case.

Because you can advertise to all the people who don't change their HDDs or even know how to that you have such a large HDD, a number bigger than the other guy's HDD?
And then you can also slap a big *new larger HDD* sign on your advertisement?
I'd bet in 2 or 3 years, a larger HDD may be included, maybe. Not anywhere close to now because we all know that 600 is still a hefty sum of money.

What do you want them to say at this point?
It's just like Microsoft labeling the early pics of XboxElite as internal experiments.
A new model is confirmed to be coming if they filed request for it.
The question is, how does it fit with the current offering?
Are they going to cut the price by 100$ selling the 20GB at 399$, the 60GB at 499$ and this 80GB at 599$?
Or maybe they're just going to put a 80GB in the current 60GB model and maybe a 60GB hard drive in the current 20GB model keeping the same prices?

but in that case why pay 100 dollars more for just 20 more gigs of space?

The only reason this was released was so that ppl could re-focus their ire back on Sony, because MS, for a brief moment in time, had the microscope pointed squarely on them. Sony dismissed it earlier as nothing more than a "better safe than sorry" action. Case closed.

What do you want them to say at this point?
It's just like Microsoft labeling the early pics of XboxElite as internal experiments.I know, but PS3 just launched in Europe and it wouldn't make sense that they were taking decisions on a 80 GB model right now, and it's true that they'll always register things that they will not end up using, but they do it just in case. I remember Sony registered a PS3 logo that looked exactly like the PS2 logo with a 3, and it never meant they were going to use it.

Reputable source, Sony actually comments on it and it's more likely than some of you are giving it. Remember their multi-model strategy they wanted?

Yup but they reported on this:

which is a genuine Sony filing document. Sony has already admitted it's true, they just won't confirm a new model is coming at this point.

The thing is, this SKU isn't designed to be described as a "screw job" for early adopters, right? The only real difference is the larger HDD, correct? Considering that it is true, I honestly don't expect to see this model released for retail for quite a while, if ever. There's honestly no point for it at this stage of the console's life. Just look at the posts at Kotaku. Everybody's already gone back to wailing on their favorite punching bag. It hasn't even been 3 days before the heat's already been taken off MS. Excellent timing for this little tidbit of information to be released to the public.

and that is why I doubt this news as well. why would they pay more for bigger HDDs when consumer can get them for cheap and with much bigger capacities?
I expect a change in the 20G model before this happens.

the only way this would screw anyone is if they made it cost the same as the 60GB model.

I say put the 80 into the 60 gig SKU and put the 60 instead of the 20...

I heard that it may replace the 60GB model. That makes the most sense as it would be stupid to increase the price of the PS3 when they're already having a tough time selling it at the price its at. Nobody's gona pay extra for a measily 20GB, especialy when you can upgrade the HDD to any size you want. Sony needs to just do a better job of letting consumers know just how open the PS3 really is. You can use nealy any type of memory stick, HDD, BT headset ect..., You'd think people plopping down $600 bones for a console would do their research and know what items to buy. Playing against people online with no voice chat because they didn't know they can use the PS2 one or any BT one baffels me. You'd think anyone spending this kinda money would be in the know, especialy hardcore gamers.
