REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – March 29, 2007 – Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced that iconic actor David Hayter will lead an all-star cast of returning voice talent in the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. Continuing his commitment to the series and character he helped to define, Hayter will provide the voice for an aging and exhausted Solid Snake in the latest chapter of Hideo Kojima’s legendary tactical espionage action video game series.

Returning to voice Solid Snake in an original script by Hideo Kojima and Shuyo Murata, David Hayter will be joined by returning voice actors Quinton Flynn, Paul Eiding and Christopher Randolph who will continue their work as the voices of Raiden, Roy Campbell and Hal “Otacon” Emmerich, respectively. In addition to his well known voice work in the Metal Gear Solid series, Hayter is an accomplished Hollywood script writer, having penned the original screenplays for box office hits such as “X-Men,” “X2: X-Men United,” and the upcoming “Black Monday.” Kris Zimmerman will also return to the Metal Gear Solid series to direct the voice acting sessions for the game.

“I couldn't be more excited about this game. What I've seen of Metal Gear Solid 4 has absolutely blown me away. To bring the focus of the story back to Solid Snake, and to work with Kris Zimmerman and many of the amazing actors that provided iconic voices for the previous games, is like coming home,” said David Hayter. “I'm so proud and grateful to have been involved with Mr. Kojima as the voice of Snake, for nearly a decade, on this legendary video game series. This game is going to plunge players into the ultimate Metal Gear experience. And personally, I can't wait to play it.”

David Hayter will be a special guest on The Kojima Productions Report podcast on March 29 to discuss his involvement with the Metal Gear Solid series and his approach to portraying a very different Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4. The podcast is available for download at the official Kojima Productions web site (http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/english/) and via the iTunes music store. anybody agrees that Hyter's sound would come off as too young for the new Old Snake?
I think I'll actually let the game be in Japanese voice with English subs. Japanese are the best voice actors!

Woot!

They'll probably mod Hayter's voice a bit. His Japanese voice over sounded appropriately old and gruff, but I dunno if they used the same actor for his Japanese dialogue.

Nice news, but yes, I think David will have to tune his voice properly for old Snake.

I wonder if MGS4 will be dubbed to Spanish. MGS1 was and it became really successful, and the dubbing was movie-quality, without cheap actors usually found in PC games Spanish dubs. MGS2 and 3 weren't dubbed and I think that made the series less popular in Spain. In any case, I'm sure I'll be able to play it with either Japanese or English voice acting. I will make sure to play at least once with Japanese voices.

You know what; I'm putting my rupees on the table right now. Anybody wanna bet David Hayter DOESN'T play Snake?

I say it's a sure thing. It's the only choice.

Old Snake might not really be old...if you go by the tease Kojima put in the last trailer.

On a side note I don't mind the guys voice but I hope they do the acting part of it better...it always sounded too scripted IMO.

For last-gen I always found that appealing for some reason. It always felt right. But, I agree that for 4 (and obviously for the film) they should run through the dialogue a bit more smoothly to fit better with the new look and atmosphere.

This news comes as no shock, but it's still nice to get the confermation.

I wonder how Snake will sound now that hes old (yes I know about the podcast, but I'm not listening to that)

Watch...when it comes out you WILL play as young snake and the old one was just to show off the facial animation technology of the ps3.

the podcast only briefly spoilers the ending of Snake Eater, other than that, it is just blabber. there is nothing in it at all worth listening to. Hyter (pronounced like 'hater'. I thought it was pronounced like 'hi ter') switches to Snakes voice in about the next half of the interview just for fan service.

I would love to see him and others actually do the voice acting as it feels weird looking at the actual persons behind the voices.

PS. I tried to find the official MGS4 thread to update it with this news but couldn't find it. it turns out that the thread's name was actually using the full title name and not just the abbreviation. that explains why I couldn't find it. if someone could either combine this into the official thread or close it, please.

you have a point there, but the thing is it would just stand out too much. seeing an old man with a young voice just doesn't click well. it's not natural nor expected.

PS. Hayter did mention that he had to change his voice in the game. he also said he has a lot to say in the game using that voice. take that as you want.
