Well, I played it for a few hours today as well. It is a pretty good game, excellent eye candy with my HDTV.
While Nariko is no Kratos, she is fairly impressive. I can't really comment on the gameplay/repetition until I finish it though. Worth my 70 bucks, so far.

Well, I'm here and I'm not going anywhere! :-)
Let me make a specific point.
From what I have seen on my HDTV the cut scenes look BEYOND FANTASTIC. Let me stress that, BEYOND FANTASTIC!
However, the in game graphics look "good" on my SDTV. They look beyond anything the PS2 could manage.
I am NOT badmouthing the in-game graphics. I just don't think they look spectacular on a SDTV.
I think they would look better on an HDTV.

For someone who is obsessed with graphics I'm surprised you play your games on an SDTV. Perhaps if you don't have an HDTV yet, you should look for games that are fun to play and not worry too much about graphics until you do go HD.
I've played the Heavenly Sword demo on both an HDTV and SDTV and while the HDTV obviously looked much better, it still looked fantastic on the SDTV. If you don't think Heavenly Sword looked good then I just can't imagine you being happy with the graphics in any game.

There sure are multiple immature, childish, and selfish individuals on this forum...
MILR I don't think anyone is attacking or harassing you, they just get wound up when you continually talk about your unrealistic expectations with graphics and repeat the same points over and over. I personally don't mind it as it takes a lot more than that to wind me up, but I can see why others get annoyed. I don't think anyone has anything against you personally, it's just they've heard everything you've got to say and it's almost become a joke.
Like I say, I personally don't have a problem with your posts, but I can see why others are sick of it. I would suggest you talk about other things aswell as graphics, but I know you will not do that and that is why people will coninue to be annoyed by your posts.

Beat it last night, Bohan was really pissing me off. Nice CG at the end, kind of confirming a sequel but who knows.
Really enjoyed the game a ton. Felt like it could've used a bit more polishing, the vsync/framrate issues kind of ruined a lot the great cutscenes and gameplay. Still a great game with tons of production value, going to have a go at hell mode tonight.

Heavenly Sword Impressions by Omni
Firs off, this game is a welcome addition to Sony's titles. Heavenly Sword will be another Playstation branded game along with Warhawk...
If Ninja Gaiden and DMC are the hardcore action games that's loved by gamers and hated by casuals, then Heavenly Sword is at the opposite end of the spectrum. It's easy to get into, but not so hard to master.
The best way to describe the game is a really, really good interactive movie. Indeed the action is awesome, but you never feel like you have control of Nariko the same way as Dante or Kratos. Saying that, Heavenly Sword is not God of War caliber, simply because GoW get's the hardcore/casual/presentation/action-adventure thing so right it's hard to be compared.
What it does get right, is sucking you into the story, and it is really good so far. Probably the best voice acting in video game history, and the presentation/art direction is classic.
Game isn't without it's flaws, but almost all of the stuff we're complaining about will no doubt get treatment in the sequel. On it's own, Heavenly Sword is game that should be in any PS3 owner's collection. It's fun to play, and even more entertaining to watch. Cool, by yourself, or let the whole family sit down and LOL to Andy's amazing performances...
Must-buy 8.5-8.9 scores are on the money...
If your not playing this right now...U should be...
unless your playing Warhawk--then I can understand;)
Not sure about Lair yet, but Heavenly Sword certainly has delivered. Another franchise for PS3...

Ninja Nina Kristensen Interview! :thumbl:
Developer Afterthoughts: Heavenly Sword Interview
Posted on September 12th, 2007 at 21:34 EDT
With Heavenly Sword now out on store shelves (well, sorta), PSU thought it would be great to get some comments from one of the game's developers and afterthoughts on their feelings about the game and how it's being accepted by the public.
Our interview was done with Nina Kristensen, Co-founder of Ninja Theory and Chief Development Ninja for Heavenly Sword. Nina has been in the gaming industry for almost 12 years and her work (along with many others) has helped Heavenly Sword to become one of the the best PS3 titles available to date.
PSU: After working on the project for more than 4 years, how do you feel about finally finishing the game and getting it out to store shelves?
It feels completely surreal! A bunch of my rather excitable friends called me last night saying they'd just seen the ad for Heavenly Sword on TV – it's amazing and slightly terrifying when something you've spent so much of your life on is suddenly in the public eye.
PSU: We've read that Heavenly Sword is a trilogy and now that the first title is shipping soon, have you already started pre-production on the next game in the series or is the team moving in a new direction with a new franchise?
We haven't announced what we're doing next but we'll certainly keep you posted...
It has been confirmed that Heavenly Sword will be supporting PlayStation Home. What items, trophies, and additional content are planned and will they be available the day Home launches?
We have not announced anything at this time. We'll keep you posted...
What are your thoughts on some of the harsh early reviews? IGN has given Heavenly Sword a 7/10 and Edge a 6/10? Would you agree with their critiques and what does Ninja Theory have planned to perhaps improve in the next title?
I think a 6 is harsh but you can't take it too personally. The team's put an enormous effort into Heavenly Sword and I'm proud of what we've been able to achieve this time around. We'll certainly be looking at the criticisms as well as feedback generally for our next games. There's always room for improvement and we already have some cool ideas about where we want to take combat next to make it even more engaging and dramatic.
PSU: Was there anything you wanted in the game but time constraints or budget kept out? Could we see any of this perhaps in future downloads as additional content? (Perhaps an unlockable bikini costume for Nariko…haha)
We would have loved to do downloadable content but when we sat down and thought hard about where our efforts should go, it became very clear very quickly that we should put all our focus into the single player offline experience and make that as good as we possibly could.
What was the most difficult aspect of development of Heavenly Sword?
We faced a lot of challenges, new platform, new caliber of cinematics, new combat systems – new just about everything! One area that was more challenging than expected was actually the art pipeline. For example, to get the level of fidelity into the characters we wanted, we needed to learn new techniques and software. We hired extensively out of film and television seeking people with skills that hadn't traditionally been used in games. We worked closely with Weta Digital (famed for their incredible work on Lord of the Rings, King Kong & many others) to understand their techniques for believable facial animation and translate that into realtime.
PSU: What part of the game are you most happy with?
For me it's the combat. I'm quite a selfish games player and mostly want to feel powerful and cool at every opportunity ;) In Heavenly Sword, when you pull off a particularly good move, you get to see what you're doing in considerable detail via "cool cams" which pan around to show off the move often with some slo-mo and other effects. I've been known to demand "did you see that!?! Did you see what I just did??" to the long suffering guy who sits next to me at work.
PSU: Has Ninja Theory shared their technology used in Heavenly Sword with other developers? If so, what types of things have been shared?
Mostly we share ideas; we're pretty open about what we do and how we do it and most developers are happy to respond in kind. I think the days of keeping techniques secret are largely gone. We all benefit from sharing and it pushes development as a whole forward much more rapidly than if we all had to think up everything from scratch.
PSU: Anything else you'd like to add?
I'd also point out that where we can, we buy high end technology. For example, we use Havok in Heavenly Sword for our physics. Sure, we could write our own physics system but that wouldn't make sense. There are goodness knows how many man-years invested in developing Havok and since it's a good system that does what we want it to do, we can deploy our team to other areas which are unique to the game.

It's a two-way road, this video game business. Developers want you to buy their products so, in turn, if you request something from them then you had better be willing to front the cash. During a presentation and Q&A at last night's Warhawk tournament at 3Rooms, Tameem Antoniades (co-founder of Ninja Theory) was asked what his response was to the criticism that Heavenly Sword was too short. He replied that Ninja Theory are definitely interested in extending the experience via downloadable content - but only if it sells well.
The game has been getting good reviews pretty much across the board, with the most common criticism being that there simply isn't enough game to play. With the marketing push that is happening in Europe (we couldn't get through the paper this morning without being greeted by Nariko's face at least twice) we expect the game to sell well, but will it sell enough to persuade Ninja Theory to release extra content? We sincerely hope so. If you want to see it happen, then put down the money and buy the game.

MILR is a decent young man who has an obsession with graphics, that's all. there are far worse individuals than MILR on this forum, who constantly attack him for having his own views. i disagree with MILR and his dream, not because i don't share some of those dreams, but because i realize it's unrealistic and not desirable for all games to strive for realism. some of you have pushed MILR to fight his corner and now you complain because he has the BALLS to stick with his opinions and not follow like sheep. i'll tell you what some of you are: BULLIES! he deserves his PS3 as much as the next person. Well I have bought it and approximately about half way through. If there is any questions I would be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. Outside of brief statement I made a day or two ago so far there really isnt much to add.
Kai segments are the portions of the title that seem to be plagued by framerate the most (and I wouldnt doubt that this is where many of the statements spring from).
Enemies do get a bit repetitive in their lack of variety.
Background and character detail is extremely well done. The environments have a majestic sense to them and the characters while not as well done definitely (still beautiful though) fit well into their surroundings.
Fighting system is very good as well although IMO the game could very well use the addition of a jump button. Ground based combat is great as the switching stances and combos plays well into defeating enemies, although air juggling is problematic and not very well incorporated into the combat. I havent really noticed any particular outstanding AI from enemies as the difficulty in fights usually revolves around the amount of them and using different approaches to defeating the enemy much more so than the enemies being "skilled or intelligent". There are times if one quits attacking that the enemies will simply stand and look at you (although this wont last long) but there definitely is not a repeated onslaught coming from them. It is important to note that I am only half way through and enemy engagements have become progressively harder, this statement may have been made somewhat premature.
Kai's "twing twang" missions are a good relief from repetitive battles, but her arrows move unexpectedly slow. The aftertouch option is very well done and motion control for this title fits extremely well into gameplay by only adding to the immersion much more so than hampering it. I dont particularly like Kai as a character, I feel like a stronger supporting lead would have done more for the title than the childish innocence found in Kai.
Boss fights are usually about discovering their pattern and using it against them. They are challenging and enjoyable although they lack a certain edge to them. Overall though they are well done and incorporated well into the game's pacing.
I could spend days speaking on the presentational value of this title but it wouldnt come close to experiencing it. By far the best presentation of any next gen title to date (or possibly in the near future). A level beyond anything else ever done.
Really a great game and everyone should at least give it a rental. It is one of those titles that you want in your collection.
PS- I simply dislike the hair on her, everything else is so marvelously detailed and rendered that these blockish lumbering locks may take away from the overall visual quality at times. (this is primarily opinion)
PPS- I would have liked to see a little more action/platformer elements to the title.
The game is only releasing in my country next week, but a definite purchase for me!. Average review scores around the net give this game an 8 and im guessing it woulda got a 9 if it was longer in length so im all smiles about getting this :)

Pretty much my thoughts are this game sucks and deserved lower scores than it got (5.5 comes to my mind.)
It doesn't hold a candle to any other action games and it plagued with flaws (framerate issues) and clunky sixaxis controlls.
And it is only a freaking six hour game, I mean me and my brother both beat it in 2 days. WTF is that. I'm probably gonna return this game today.

this is not good news for Sony.
HS has been getting a lot of very good feedback from players.
Tbh I think the demo alone (the Japanese one) destroys for example God of War completely...
Why is it not good news for Sony should we not wait on some sales numbers in a couple of months first?

I'm about halfway through and share many of the same thoughts as Wounding... The fighting engine is fine, but there's no real incentive to learn the combos just understanding the counter system will take you a long way...
Since there's a lot of depth to the fighting engine I would like to see a necessity to use specific combos, Arial attacks and evasive maneuvers. I perform them all not, but more for a dramatic flair and not necessity. I may play the game on hell mode and see if more understanding of the fighting mechanics is essential. I like the motion after touch, but I'm having a little difficulty with the sensitivity does not seem responsive enough to motions...
I completely agree with everyone's remarks regarding this title having some of the best cinematic flair and voice acting ever seen in a game. Also, the sound effects and music are amazing! Some of the voice acting is a bit overdone, but its light years ahead of almost every other title released... I can't seem to put this game down so I'm sure it will be beaten in the near future... Once I have completed the game I will share additional thoughts, but at this point I would recommend every PS3 owner give this game a purchase or at least a rental.
*The presentation value of Heavenly Sword is what Next-gen is all about IMO!*

bingo! the voice acting concerned me throughout it's development. the problem with Motion capture from what i'm seeing at the moment, is that the movements have to be exaggerated somewhat in order to get the right movement. i'd say the only way round this is to have a tightly fitting suit that has built in pickups
Wow you know the things you guys complain about i really don't think 90% of gamers care about that much, like occasionally dropping frame rates and your OPINIONS of what action games should play like. This isn't God of war, Devil May Cry or NG so deal with it and try something new! As for the A.I issue do your really think it prudent to give 20 enemies attacking you super A.I ??? really do you? Please apply some logic! The only issue i see in this game as a negative is its length. A average review score of 8 is good news for a new I.P and the amount of sales in couple of months will depict good or bad news for Sony not guys on a forum nitpicking every single miniscule detail of a new Sony game every single time one is released. It's like you guys are expecting the second coming every time a new Sony game is announced! Rant over!

^Based on this title the HS sequel should be absoluetly amazing...
I have the feeling NT will take a lot of the gameplay and AI feedback and make some modifications in the sequel. If they get the difficulty and length right the rest is already there and we will have an undisputed classic on our hands...

Okay, presentation value was awesome, I can agree with that. But what use is it when the story isn't that great, or the fact that I am not fully enjoying the experence of playing the game.
And average isn't 8 Acid, check most game sites. 8 is a great score, 7 is average for games, but for me, this game is even below that because the only thing it really has going for it is the presentation of the game as a whole. I don't know about you guys, but I am of the opinion if a game isn't fun to play, all the best graphics and presentation isn't going to help it. It will just show that the dev was focusing on the wrong things.
And framerate issues are a big thing, it affects the gameplay when it starts to slowdown during the more intensive action scenes.
I think this game could have used maybe 6 more months in developement. That would have probably made it a much better game in my opinion.

I dunno Hisham, I found the game really fun to play most of the time...
I don't really care for the kai parts tho...
but yeah, of course it's highlights are presentation and story, but the combat system and throwing bodies around was really unique IMO too...
Either way, I thinks it's a good addition to PS3...
also I labeled it a very good interactive movie...
for some, that might not be good enough if you really like being in control of a character and focus on gameplay elements. Then you'd probably agree with IGN more...
But as fun as DMC3 was--I had to force myself to finish it because of how unoriginal it felt and the kinda cliche story and presentation...
Just different preferences man...I feel you
Hisham
09-15-2007, 11:30 PM
Nobody mentions the uninspired puzzles though. And bascially however deep the fighting system is, you only really need two or three combos to finish the game.
But yeah at the end of the day it is just preference more than anything. I find the game not as great as you guys are making it out to be. For me, I'd rather play through a cliche sort of story and have awesome gameplay (because cliche and corny one liners make me laugh at the stupidity of them) rather than play a story intensive game (which really didn't have that great of a story IMO) with gameplay being comprimised.
I just want to tell people not to overrate this game based on the fact that the PS3 is still on a games drought.
Cyrus

I LOVE DMC3 and NGS and I dont agree with IGN at all (based from the demo though :p). I love the combat system, the gameplay of the game.
I dont think uninspired puzzles matter in a game like this at all. Yeah, if there are some nice puzzles (like in GoW), it can add something to the experience but I really didnt miss puzzles in NG or DMC so I dont see why I would miss them here either. I just want the combat which is amazingly satisfying and on top of that the game has absolutely amazing graphics, great story-telling and killer music. It would be great if it offered a very big challenge as well (and maybe Hell mode will offer bigger challenge) but tbh it isnt absolutely necessary. I will still use the combat system as widely as I can because it just feels so cool to look so cool while killing all the badguys. :p

I agree with some of your concerns, but since I have not completed the game I will reserve my final opinions of the game. I also agree that a few months of development would have helped, but this game has been in development for a long time and needed to be released in 2007. I strongly believe some if the technical issues will be overcome in the sequel. (i.e tearing, frame rate drops, shadow flickering, etc.)
Regardless of the flaws you have to give props for the nice fighting engine, presentation, lighting, sound & motion capture. I have the feeling the sequel is going to be a masterpiece, because they have a solid foundation to build from.
Once I finish the game I will post more definative thoughts regarding the title...

Hmm well i rented this today at like 2, got home 3 played until 6:30 and have just got to chp4 and i must say it is teh bombz. I NEVER like single player in games due to my love of online gaming but this game for some reason has drawn me in. I love the presentation, story (Hell F**k yes), visuals and those g-damn cutscenes - especially the ones were the camera is in first person view and it immerses you THAT much more in the story. So far as an almost strictly multiplayer kinda gamer - this game def. deserves like an 8.5 or higher screw what the other people say.
I <3 this game.
But knowing that after this playthrough (probably will be done by tues because of school and crap) i wont pick it up again so it really is the ULTIMATE rental.
Just my 2 cents :p

This whole ultimate rental bullshit is like an underhanded slap IMO...
The game is about 8 hours, but honestly the only SP games that really give gamers a value is RPGs. Even Bioshock was about 15 hours so a dedicated gamer could complete the game in a weekend... If the game is a great SP title and has amazing visuals and presentation I think the title is worth a purchase. I'm not a huge SP gamer, but I do purchase games that will give me an amazing experience and Heavenly Sword fits the build...
I got the feeling we are going to be hearing this ultimate rental bullshit for all of the 1st party PS3 titles since they do not support multiplayer.
(Warhawks the only exception...)
BTW I'm at the final chapter and here's my review score:
Gameplay: B+
Presentation: A+
Fun Factor: B+
Value: C
Overall: B+
I can't justify giving the game an A based on it's level design simplicity, easy difficulty & short length, but it could easily earn an B+ or A- overall for the amazing presentation and great gameplay. We are not talking about GOTY material, but it's one of the best action/adventure games released this year IMO...

PSN should certainly make a splash in quality this year as well...

Ok. I beat it today so it took about 6 or 8 hours and it was totally the bomb.
My ONLY 2 problems with the game were:
1. The damn final Battle. It was harder because of that crappy camera and those Gdamn wings.
2. That one puzzle where you have to bounce a shield of a statue of bohan after using the wheel lever thing to pull it up.
otherwise it owned.
Def. Reccomendation.

True, I can't wait for Uncharted. Hell I'm even waiting on Folklore as well.
I just found this game utterly disappointing (I'm guessing me holding this game up to DMC3 and Onimusha 4 doesn't help) and I even found Genji 2 better than this game in terms of gameplay that was fun. I just didn't find the game to great. I'm guessing if it was longer than 6 hours, I probably wouldn't have the paitence to finish it.
Right now what pisses me off is that I only play puzzle fighter remix, and Tekken 5 on my PS3... Puzzle Fighter is almost the same as it was on the Dreamcast and Tekken 5, while great online, is still a last gen game. The actual PS3 games I have right now have utterly disappointed me (except maybe VF5). Especially HS, because I was looking forward to a game that might actually give the PS3 purchase some value.
And the combat system itself wasn't that deep. Atleast not to me. You didn't need to use more than 2 or 3 combos to get through the whole game. It was better than Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox in that respect (flying swallow gets you thru the whole game) because you actually had to see what type of attack your opponent was doing, but it still wasn't as fun or deep as DMC3 or Shenmue.

Just as entertaining as DMC to me....
I think you just like that in-control responsive gameplay tho Hisham...Don't worry DMC4 will be here soon enough;)
I also recommend Warhawk even if you aren't a big online gamer (neither am I)

as entertaining as DMC to me..
I never thought I'd say it before I got to play HS but now that I've played the demo til death I honestly think it's MORE entertaining than DMC3. Why? Next-gen. It honestly is next-gen. The flow of the combat is just so freakin amazing because of the physics and the animations. When you manage to get everything right and just fuckin tear 15 enemies apart completely using the entire move set with juggles, aerials, counters, different combos and aftertouch it feels so damn satisfying and looks just unbelievably cool.
Yeah, I understand it can get boring and repetitive if you use one combo throughout the game and it's kinda a shame that the game doesnt seem to be difficult enough to force you to use more combos and moves but honestly... I just dont see the point in fighting using only two combos throughout the game and spoiling the experience when the devs have at least given you the option to use them more creatively.

I just fought Roach and it was incredible and hilarious at the same time...
I'm gonna have to beat everything again for my wife to see...
If the game just ran at 60fps and had a better level design...better puzzle/better platforming etc...(hello a jump button!!!)
like the swinging chain segments in God of War for example, it would easily get high 9's in my book...
Hopefully we can look for even more responsiveness in a sequel, but damn this and Warhawk have been the best things I've played on my PS3 this year.
VF5/Resistance come in second these babies...
King Bohan is an idiot ahahhahahhaah...
and I had that moment where I just felt awesome...
I think I did like 4 or 5 counters in a row, just swinging and breaking enemies all over the place. Then finished off with a level 2 special!!!!
I was like OMG=-o this bitch is INSANE!!!!
lol....
If Uncharted tops this we're in for a treat!
btw-I agree 100% on the ultimate rental BS...this game should be in your library...I plan to play it at least 3 or 4 more times with my wife. And the amount of times I'm gonna watch all the animated videos/cut-scenes is endless...
It is flawed, but it's got the goods to be another Playstation franchise, make no mistake about it...

God of War easter egg hidden in Heavenly Sword
Posted Sep 16th 2007 2:30PM by Andrew Yoon
Members of the PS3 Forums have found an interesting easter egg in Heavenly Sword. Kratos' sword and armor from God of War can be found somewhere in the depths of the armory during Kai's mission. Now, that begs the question: who would win in a fight: Kratos or Nariko? (We're siding with the tortured Greek here.)

Finished the game and all I can say is wow!
I have not seen such a compelling story for an action game since God Of War.
I definately plan to play the game on Hell mode and really spend some time mastering the fighting system...
Since Deano visits our forums I'm tempted to post some suggestions or wish list for Heavenly Sword 2, but at this point it's a bit premature. I really hope the game sells well, because a sequel will be absolutely amazing if they address some of the current flaws. Also since they have their art pipeline in place I'm sure the sequel will be significantly longer in length... Deano, the NT squad did a great job with HS and hopefully you will see the fruits of your labor with strong software sales. *You got my $60 bucks... ;) *

I'm fighting bohan right now and this easily surpasses God of War 2 Zeus fight. Not as good as Kratos vs. Ares tho...
But yeah man...This is a must-buy for PS3 owners...
Honestly just because people are so quick to grade a game based on numbers, I would've given it an even 9.0 so people know not to pass up on this title...

Omni, I have to completely agree with one of your previous post regarding the 2nd play through on Hell mode... This game is getting better and better so the no replay value is out the window! I'm really enjoying my 2nd play through on a more challenging difficulty better than the first. The No Turning Back is incredible on Hell Mode, because they throw additional enemies at you that have greater health. If you concentrate on style doing tons of reversals & arial attacks the visuals are amazing especially with all the tables, vases & chairs flying all over the place... I found the section still very easy once I mastered the controls, but it was more fun and satisfying playing in hell mode. I really wish the developers had more sections like that stage in the game, because the figthing engine really shines during those sequences and if the enemy AI was a little more aggressive this game would give Ninja Gaiden a run for it's money regarding fighting depth and that bad ass feeling.
I guess they decided not to focus on the arena style fighting senarios so the game would not be put in that box, but that's where the game shines so I wish they included 5 additional mini stages like No Turning Back, Beware the Fox, The Prison, etc. *Deano you listening?*
The boss battles are definately more challenging on Hell Mode, because the Flying Fox battle was more intense and difficult. The boss character performs the same moves, but they cause more damage so you have to use good combos and countering to defeat the boss.
*The Power Stance move, "Laughing Devil" is very effective and throwing downed enemies if you can hit him...*
I just had to share my experience of the 2nd play through and strongly suggest anyone who purchased the game to give Hell mode a go... Honestly Hell mode should have been the default and an easier level should have been an option if you died a lot for casual gamers.
*I may eat those words during some of the harder boss battles...*

Oh my god Heavenly Sword is awesome.
Bohan is so hard! I suck at fighting games, so it was especially difficult!
Kai ftw. Kai's levels are so fun! I love this game :D
And I know the cutscenes were supposed to be amazingly well done, but there is not one video on the internet that even comes close to describing how well done they are. Only the game can show someone that, that's ***king ridiculous good stuff. Not considering the content of the videos or dialogue and just on a realism and convincing level, these cutscenes are beyond anything by a long, long shot.
P.S. I would've loved the game more with a little backtracking, a few puzzles that take some more time, more Kai levels (:cloud9:) and some long pathways to walk and just enjoy the scenery. I thought there was too much emphasis on countering in some of the boss fights too, but I still liked them a lot.
I was glad to get this game (returned GRAW2, I hadn't had any incentive to touch it since almost 2 weeks I think, got really boring) and experience the first of many quality Sony brand videogames. Now onto Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank, and Uncharted for the nearest future :)

I'm glad that every time I've watched TV lately, pretty much just TBS I think or comedy channels and music channels, I've seen the Heavenly Sword advert.
And it's not like I've been watching long, just in like prime time or like late evening for a bit, and I've seen it pop up every time. I really, really hope to see this continuing, a lot. I think this HS advert also has a very engaging quality, just very stylish and very Sony like to be honest.
I'm very, very happy to see that, very happy. One it's the coolest advert ever, and two, finally, some advertising for the love of god.

I think we need a lot of gifs and fuckin marketing for this game. I cant begin to describe how bad I'm going to feel especially for NT if the game doesnt top the charts.. Just a mindblowing experience.

True say man... I also will feel bad if this doesn't do well commercially...
I'm glad they've at least marketed it on TV pretty well, the ad is still running pretty often, and it's a pretty sick advert.

IMHO there are two faults in the game. The framerate in a lot of levels is too low and the fact that there's not enough "true" Nariko combat with the heavenly sword. I dont think there was too much Kai or anything else, I actually loved even the QTE's and the small "puzzles" very much but there should've been more Nariko just battling different sized enemy groups with varied enemies. Again, I think there was enough enemy variety but not enough of the combat when the variety picked up.
But the experience overall was so unbelievable that it didnt bother me almost at all. I honestly think this is the best game I've played and if they fix those two little things in the (hopefully upcoming) sequel, I think there can never be a game as good as HS2 would be after that. :p

Hehe :D
Yeah I have to say I was surprised I liked the Kai sections. And I was especially surprised I liked the QTE's. They were just so amazing scenes with such great music that it was impossible not to love them. First time I've liked QTE's in games actually. And I think the section where you had to pull the levers mixed together with the QTE's and the couple of battles was very fun. Also, basically every scene and arena was very memorable. Like the rainy bridge with the camera fixed to the side, simply amazing!

Yeah, from the videos I thought it was a huge design flaw in the game but IMO it was actually a great design choice. Kept the game flowing and allowed for some spectacular scenes for the player to interact with a little.
Btw. the music in the game is absolutely unbelievably amazing. Have to see what projects the composer has worked on earlier.

We need a .gif of the scene where bohan says, 'You have something I want, and I have something that you want," :-O
Scour the internet! If you have the means, capture it yourself!
Yeah, that's my fav. cutscene so far and the one when Nariko yells cuz Bohan kicked her "father" and then Bohan mimicks her scream back @ her, then just be like, "Kill her" all calmly right afterwards.

God damn this game was awesome!
Positive
-Every friggin' cutscene in this game was badass, the best acting ever captured for a video game, with some of the coolest one liners ever.
- Combat system doesn't require you to be the best at memorization, I basically learned 3-4 combos and used those + counters and had a great time.
- The quicktime events weren't that hard, thank god because I'm not too good at them
- The aftertouch feature is sooo much fun to use, throwing bodies is actually a really good strategy.
- Kai's levels were fun as hell, and weren't just an afterthought.
- Great rental for the casual action fan.
Negative
- This game took me honestly about 4 hours to beat, definitely a one night stand.
-The frame rate drops in this game make me think I'm playing a PC game, they need to get it right next time.
- Why is it that most technology in this game runs off of the power of Gongs? the US government should look into harnessing these things.
- Audio glitches (audio cutting out randomly for 2 seconds wtf?) need to be looked at.
- Not much replayability, besides to watch the awesome cutscenes again.
Ending Thoughts
-A must play/rent for any PS3 owner.
-This game is ripe for downloadable content!
- I think we can all agree that Kai and Bohan are some of the coolest characters ever made.
Personal favorite Bohan lines..
*Nariko's father gets beat up by Bohan*
Nariko: AAAAAAAAHH..
Bohan: AAAAAAAAHH.. Kill her.
*Fox is teleporting around*
Bohan: How... how do you do that?

....., just with no spaces on the first one.
To deflect, you gotta do it like this. The projectiles will touch Nariko for about .4 seconds or about half a second. You don't press deflect before it hits you, but any time in that .4 second to half a second time slot where it has already just touched you.
Blue is deflected by just pressing Triangle, a 'quick' deflection, yellow by weak attacking, L1 plus either [] or Triangle (no timing needed to deflect yellows), red by R1 + Triangle.
Hard boss, but keep at it if you haven't already beaten him. Countering is key to beating him ;)

btw, I got the game for free from my manager and beat it 2 days ago, it took me about 6.5 hours I think... AWESOME game. I just made it to the final boss on Hell mode...
The game is amazing and it's a shame it did not recieve the props it deserved IMO. The reviews were not bad, but this game has set a benchmark for ingame cinema. Honestly after playing this game it has ruined other titles, because the ingame cinemas look like trash in comparsion to HS.
Once I beat Bohan in Hell mode I'm not sure If I will play the title that much except for a few levels occasionally, because I like the combat engine.
I really believe the default difficulty should have been Hell Mode, because the game did not really get difficult on Hell Mode until you reached the last three chapters IMO. Hell Mode required you use combos, counters, throwing objects & kicking tables, etc...
Not to create a shit storm, but after playing HS it makes Halo ingame cinemas look horrible. I just got Halo 3 today and the SP campaign is great, but the ingame cinemas look like trash after the standard HS has set...
*I'm not comparing the two titles in any way except for production value of cinemas...*
Cyrus
09-21-2007, 11:45 PM
Yeah and everything else feels like trash as well. All the vistas, the music, the overall feeling and emotion of the story, the feeling of the combat, everything is behind in other titles compared to HS. :D The soundtrack is just unbelievable. The lighting is beyond belief. Etc. etc. This is IMO easily the most underrated game ever even though its average is over 80 in gamerankings. And these feelings come from the normal difficulty. I havent started hell mode yet because I havent had time but I will start it tomorrow and I think I'm going to enjoy the game even more on that difficulty.
Honestly, when I finished HS my excitement and anticipation for many other titles dropped down a little. It just feels like no other title can match the feeling you get when you go through HS's journey. I think the music is the biggest single factor in all of this for me personally (I thought there would never be a better soundtrack than in Metroid Prime/FFVII/SotC but boy was I wrong) but otherwise as well. Everything oozes so much style and beauty in the game from the combat to the scenery to the cut-scenes to the music to the 5.1 sound that I dont think any game before HS2 can outdo it for me as an experience.
I know, lots of hyperbole, feel free to feel disgust, but HS just was/is such an amazing experience. :D

So my lads...
After about 6.5hrs I... beat the game... I am more than glad that I did NOT buy it, let alone at full price. I is good, it is fun (especially the Kai parts!) but it is just TOO freaking short. I mean, it is shorter than Max Payne 2.
The rest is tagged for your convenience
The story is a very generic... Save sword, save father, save kai, save world so to speak. No twists no turn, nothing. It is not that I expected a story in scale of a Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club), but at least give us something that even mainstream Hollywood now does (ok, leave the bad lovestory part out, it just sucks ok?). The only time that I felt compelled to do something was when Kai was hung by her neck. And I mean, the ONLY time.
Technically, this game looks impressive and bad altogether. Not bad in terms of stuff you see, but what you not see :D. The framerate seldomly hits 30FPS, especially in the fight with Bohan at the end. The camera OFTEN sucks donkey balls (i.e. you don't see shit) and the generic (how many different enemys were there beside bosses and minibosses?? 4?) stuff just made it very tedious at times.
The game in itself is mostly much too easy, especially since you cannot change the difficulty at the first playthru. I didn't have to reload once until the last chapter (and I merely made an error while shooting the catapults, it let the burning kegs thru)... But Bohan then was MUCH too hard... If you know how to handle him it gets easier, but dodging/countering his ballistics just is a bit too hard (I got an "A" in my reaction test at the Bundeswehr Luftwaffe, which is directed also towards freaking Jet Pilots) and the camera is MORE than sucky in these parts (as well as the framerate).
The sound is more or less ok. Nothing special and nothing bad. I didn't like it, that the main theme (a Pan Flute is it I think) was reused ALL over the place. The outro had good music, if it were the game they had planned all along (Tiger and Dragon/Hero et al). The 5.1 sound is... not used well imho.
I really don't know where those 4 or 5 years of development went, I really don't know. The graphics are good, no questions asked, as well as the underlying engine (except some stuff mentioned above), but the controls are bland (I wanted to used many counters, combos and I did but still, this is imho more bland than GoW and GoW2), the game is short as hell and well, and this is what sort of killed it for me, the main character is not likeable (she was so unfriendly and always tried to be cool, that it was just ... well I didn't like her, Kai was nice otoh). The loading times were sometimes very long (esp. when reloading, I was so pissed fighting Bohan :D)
What was good about that game... Well I already said graphics and the Kai parts... The drawdistance (also in the outdoor Kai levels) was awesome. The motion sensor was set to good use and the saving system was also done well. I hope, the Making of Videos et al are good, I am going to watch those now.
6 out of 10
EDIT:
OK, the unlockable videos are the FREAKING SAME as those available on PSN... Well that sucks!
Yes, I know, this is VERY negative, but this is only my view of the game, you don't have to be on my side in any way!

wow, im in 100% total agreement with you. 100%
I'm taking my copy back to eb to trade in for another PS3 title :P the game is just too damn short.
i deffinelty agree with ***The only time that I felt compelled to do something was when Kai was hung by her neck. And I mean, the ONLY time*** the game was hyped as having an amazing story and compeling characters (but what game isnt these days) and i didnt find either in this title the reason that kai scene made me engaged was because kai is such a likeable character and i wanted revenge haha! This may sound shallow but the only reason id keep this game is watch pretty nariko in the cutscenes. but thats just not enough lol. OH!! one thing definetl stood out with this title Andy serkis. i dont care what anyone says he was absolutley amazing in this game. he needs to get an award for his voice/facial acting for Bohan.

^ Nah I have to disagree man...
The length is awful short, roughly about 7 hours on default difficulty.
*Really felt like an interactive movie experience & just like a good movie you did not want it to end...*
I really wish Hell mode was unlockable from the start, because you really appreciate the fighting engine on the harder difficulty. Also, it would have been nice to have more incentive to do the aerial combos; I know they look cool, but they are not really required even during Hell mode.
Once again I think the game should be praised for it's ambitious production value and solid fighting engine. I agree with some of the gripes and the overall bland primary plot. I still think the story had some depth with the relationship between Nariko and her father/clan. Honestly, I would have liked more back story on Nariko in the actual game. *The HS animated series did this well...* Also, more story on Bohan and his gang & the history with Nariko's father would have been nice. I did not really feel like I wanted to defeat any of the bosses except for Flying fox and Bohan...
I still give huge props to the NT team for producing such a great overall title. The primary gripe I have is the game's length and I would imagine this will be addressed in the sequel. HS has spoiled me and I expect the same production value on all ingame cinemas...

I started hell mode today and I love the game even more. The enemy AI is a lot more aggressive and so gives opportunity to even more stylish action and makes you think more when you strike and how.
So you want to tell me, what this game is about?
I mean, the story is bland as hell (GoWs is much better, let alone 2), the battle system is more than shallow (it IS a button masher, you cannot argue that! The are NO tactics whatsoever involved) and I really don't fell compelled to play this game thru a second time (I still have it for a week). I will not pay EVER $90 (60/70€ depends on where you get it) for a game, where the main course is less than 10hrs! I don't know if there are any unlockables on Hell, but that what I got from playing thru normal was less than incentive. I mean, the making of is available on PSN, as well as the Anime. The pics don't interest me at all and well... that was it.
A game is about fun. Yes it was fun, but only for for 7hrs for me! This equals at about 10€ per hour fun (yes, one should not do such maths, but I do it anyways for comparisons sake). I am playing FFXII atm too. Fully priced, this game cost 60€ here. I am at 35hrs and I am about 2/3s thru the main story and I didn't do much beside the main story. At the end, I will surely have clocked in at 60hrs or so, which equals 1€ per hour fun... And nearly every minute of it IS fun. Compared to GoW1 and 2, HS is really bad imho. I mean, GoW on medium took me 12 to 15hrs. Same goes for GoW2, and those games are essentially the same (the name Goddes of War is justified).
But then again, to each his own.
Cyrus
09-23-2007, 12:40 AM
Well the fact that you say the combat system is more than shallow and even blander than GoW's pretty much says it all. You just see the game completely differently.
There's not much point arguing when I can see from your comments even now that the discussion wouldnt go anywhere so I will just say that I strongly disagree with you. :)
Well, I finally bought it off Ebay for £30. £10 less than I'd pay in the high-street so at least I saved some money.

I walked (something I wouldn't usually do) to blockbuster today.
First time I've been there in at least 4 years to find the price of a PS3 game to rent for 2 nights is £4.95!
The guy said to me, that because they are next gen games they are £1 more expensive!
When I had my ps1 we would goto blockbuster pretty much every friday (and buy pizza)
The games were something like £2 and £3 depending on how new it was.
£3.95 for PS2 and £4.95 for all the ps3 games is a joke. What I found even more annoying is that I had to take the game to the counter before they told me the price. I came home empty handed.
An hour of my life wasted.

@Segitz, I respect your opinion, but reading your review it just seems your being very critical of the game.
There's not many other games out there with this amazing compelling story/super tight controls/flawless level design, capturing music that fits perfectly with every scenario. I mean, it's like SHEESH!! I though the shit was pretty cool:huh:
lol, honestly to me, if felt like the game kept getting better and better. And no, you can get away with button mashing, but why do that when there's all these crazy aerial combos/counters you can unlock?
And IMO--the last boss battle was waay better than Gow2 battle with Zeus, and OMG how did you not feel like a badass with Nariko at the end?
I dunno dude, you guys may love God of War, but don't knock this game because it's not God of War 3 ya dig.
Some of the complaints seem like a dev saying "well, I could've did this better" instead of actual faults.
Indeed $60 is a lot of money for a game, but this title delivers on many fronts that some users are completely overlooking.
and I beat Gears of War is a day just about (actually didn't feel the need to complete it) and I didn't stay online with it that long. but was it worth the purchase? Of course? Games are meant to be replayed, to be showed to your friends, to be beaten on a harder difficulty etc...
IMO--I just see nitpicking instead of critical gamers.
Bioshock is what like 3 or 4 hours longer than Heavenly Sword? Is it not worth the money? Like....it's a single player experience fellas? These games aren't MGS:huh:

I was thinkging about it last night, i much prefered slashers like onimusha and dmc. so i gues HSs gameplay just isnt my thing. I did like the combat, pulling off combos and jumping about hiting multiple enemies was crazy fun though :P
the visuals in the cutscenes are just amazing. nuff said. The voice acting was really something in this game Serkis has done a stunning job with it (along with the dramatic animation).
story wise it could have been a little stronger :P is it to much to ask for slightly deeper characters? maybe a little longer cutscenes or a longer intro scene. as for the characters? i really didnt care about any of them except Kai and nariko. Shen was just a figure i didnt feel the need or wanting to rescue him i only did it because i had to haha. and bohan was such an awesome villan. I think the bosses needed something else they just didnt seem evil enough? what was their purpose? evil for the sake of evil?
the score i loved :P so i have nothing bad to say about it, i'll download it sometime in the future.
overall this game starts off slow but takes a while to gain that uber fun time for me. Kai levels were very fun though and it wasnt until 1 day to go where it got really kick ass.
and replay? what reply? okay yeah you can play through a 2nd time on hell mode (which ive done) but other that that i can see this game getting boring.
just my impressions. But again im not a huge fan on GoW so maybe its why HS isnt as fun for me as onimusha and DMC are.
sum it up in numbers?
visuals: 9
story: 6
gameplay: 7
replay ability: 3
overall 7/10

Yeah I feel ya man, because I never got through an Onimusha game, and DMC1 is the only DMC title I've ever went back and played through more than once...
so yeah--preference is why this forum is so rich...
Still tho, u suck...GoW & HS is freakin OWNAGE!!!

ok. Managed to finish this game today.
Love it. The art, animations and voice acting are second to none. The gameplay is fun. I don't know about everyone else but I'm noticing a lot of layers to the combat system, so I think it's a bit weird how people say it's shallow...just the way I see it. As for GOW I'm going to have to say this is a tad deeper in my opinion. I'm playing this on hell mode and I'm having a blast.
I'm not gonna compare it to DMC3. I haven't played that game in a while and I couldn't be bothered finishing it. There's something missing from it that I enjoyed in part 1.
Length. It is short. But it's a bloody good one. I still need to get all the glyphs and finish it on hell mode. After that I will be picking it up again. This game just delivers an unbelievably satisfying experience and as someone who has been playing games for a long time and like others on this forum would know that these don't come around too often.

Wow Segitz and Passive just said exactly what I was trying to get across before when I was in this thread.
Sorry everyone, but I am not buying all the bullshit about this game being a great action game. mediocre at best. And once more, the story was crap and a snorefest.

Im not saying its bad.. just alot shallower than advertised. i had had a problem with the voice acting. not the performance but the sound. I'm gonna make a thread about it in the video games section soon.

Yeah, sorry from me too but I dont buy this bullshit that the combat is bland and shallow because I experienced the tight action myself. :p And I am a huge NG/DMC/GoW fan so it's not like I dont have experience from the genre.
About the story, I though Whiptail was the only one that didnt serve a real purpose but I dont think every character in a movie or a game even has to. She was just there to be a boss and one more crazy person and I didnt think there was anything bad about it. Everyone else I loved. Well, Shen I felt a bit indifferent about but that was just the way he was.

Same. I suppose this will appeal to the GoW crowd. I don't understand the complaints about depth all too much having played GoW, DMC and DMC3(A bore story and gameplay wise). Oh, well. To each his own.
The serpent chick was the only character that I felt was a little misplaced. The scene where she dies is a classic though. She still was a pretty cool character and the other characters were great.
I also liked the parrallels between Nariko and Shen, and Bohan and Roach. I thought that was a nice literary touch.
Story is of GoW quality and awesomeness.

My feelings exactly.
Btw. the lead combat designer describes the combat perfectly IMO:
Mums and dads, aunts and uncles: they can all play the game, enjoy and get something out of it. You guys, when you play, can play like your relatives or you can play like a pro. The combat system gives back what you put into it. It’s an interactive system, it’s reflexive. How you feel, how you respond, how you think.
The combat system is, as you play, a portrait of you.

^ because its a game...?
we expect a little more for our money. remember the days when games were long? hell i got way more than 7 hours out of my pokemon blue :P
Isn't that just a little unfair? :huh.
When you play a game is cinematic as this, I don't see how it's bad compared to a 90 minute movie, which doesn't have helf the replayability of most games.

No offence but it seems you are all blinded by the visuals of this game. im not saying its crappy im just saying it could have been much better than it was.

WOW, I cant believe the amount of people that are pleased with buying this game at full price, full next gen price.
I rented this game and almost returned it in the same day. I have to say that this is the most overhyped, average game I have ever played. I would like to honestly know what people would rate this game out of 10. I say its 7 and thats being generous.
Why is it the biggest most talked about feature of this game its "compelling storytelling, its amazing presentation and its graphics." Least they have the Video aspect down of Videogame. To me its the Game aspect that sells and this game is lacking, this game does absolutely nothing special to distance its self from games in its genre, nothing that'll make people take note, gameplay wise.
This game could have passed for good had it comeout with the launch of the system but now, almost a year later, for full price(80 bucks here where im living). I cant help but cringe when I hear someone suggest to a friend the purchase of this game. I rented this and gave it to my friend the next day to play(it was gonna happen in the same day but couldn't reach him) after he was all pumped to buy this game, suffice to say he shook my hand and now always takes my advice over any other.
I would like to know why people think this game is worth its weight in cash, Goddess of War lite just isnt doing it for me.
Rebuttal?

I liked it? Lol! I give it an 8 :D
Money isn't so much an issue for me, so I guess that also factors in, maybe, maybe not.
It's definitely not a game like other games, it's half a step more towards an interactive movie experience. For whatever it is though, I did like it. :)
Edit - I'm really excited to see what your impressions on Uncharted will be later this year, especially everyone who wasn't as impressed with HS as me. That might be the full realization of narrative and and action game that's above HS in balancing it for a 'fuller' game :)
Passive posted some cool videos, so check out the Uncharted thread :)

as i said before i give it a 7/10
The Good
The voice acting. it was quite something in this game and serkis really shines. I hope he branches out into other titles because he really knows what he's doing.
The visuals, no denying this game looks pretty especially towards the end with the amount on screen at once. The framerate is pretty good also whish is a nice thing given slow down is nasty this gen haha.
The cut scenes. These are the reason id keep my copy. the acting from serkis is just a pleasure to watch they are nicely polished and very cinematic.
The score was one of the best i've heard in an action game.
