It's not new that is same thing as gamer's day demo and it was an old build I believe from November. heres a better version.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/19616.html (the start of the video)

But the Jeux looks like it has the blood turned on.

The jeux video also sports massive bloom (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=224). Very 360ish. Gametrailers version with blood, please.

Ooh, and on another note, maybe Nariko's sister isn't crazy. (She seems to be distracted by floating invisible entitities while Nariko is asking about Twing Twang.) Maybe the reality of what she sees will be revealed as a part of the plot?

umm your getting confused here man. yes, the footage shown in Heroes was old. the demo they showed at gamers day is the newest build of game (at that time). it was the same area shown on heroes, that doesnt mean it was the same exact code running.

I live to serve :) cept for the bits where i do my own thing.

I agree with Mokmok the anis could be a slight bit smoother, but we all know we have just had a new build shown to us (is shots anyway) fingers crossed they have adressed the animations and the transition between the cinematic parts and gamplay. But that said i hope there isnt a long break not even a second. it would take away that cinematic feel, just a small flash on the screen or sometghin imo.

Demo coming!!!!

With thanks to burgniel at PS3forums...

NinjaMatt has been answering questions on the new Official Heavenly Sword Blog (IGN). Here is a summary of the questions and answers.

"Q: Is there blood, and how's the framerate?
NM: As for the frame-rate, every day it gets better...numerous people are working on optimisations and you can visibly see it get smoother with each one.

Someone asked about the blood? Well, if you take a close look at some of the more recent screen grabs...there's definitely some claret in there! We took a conscious decision to deliver a fairly elegant blood effect rather splashing it all over the walls as this is far more in keeping with the look and feel of the game.

Q. Is there going to be a special edition of Heavenly Sword?
NM: We have talked with Sony about a special edition of Heavenly Sword. After lots of ideas and discussions we decided that there will be no special edition as such...instead we would cram the retail release with as many extras as we could fit onto a BR! The retail disk will feature a series of behind the scenes features as well as the first 2 episodes of a special 'animated series' exploring the history of the Heavenly Sword prior to the start of the game

Q: How long will it take to finish the game from start to finish, for the avarage player?
NM: Heh, this is a good question…we were a little concerned with game length around E3 last year and have worked very hard to make sure this isn’t an issue. It’s hard to estimate exactly how long it’ll take someone to run through it the first time but we believe that you can expect somewhere between 12-15 hours of play.

Q: Have you managed to push it to 1080p/60frames yet?
NM: Heavenly Sword will be delivered in 720p HD

Q: When are we getting a demo?
NM: I can confirm that we are, of course, going to be releasing a demo for Heavenly Sword…and soon! This will be downloadable via the Playstation Network…so keep an eye out for this in the very near future…and i mean very near future!"

Sequel confirmed!
Question #1
· If the opening segments of the game depict Nariko dying with Heavenly Sword in hand, what will you guys do if this game is wildly successful and there is a demand for a sequel? I mean obviously you could have some "omg divine intervention she's really alive after all" sort of thing, but those are hard to pull off. Are you going to maybe show her "dying" but not actually "dead"? Or maybe a prequel would be in order?

[mat answer] The story of the Heavenly Sword was developed with a much longer arc in mind than just a single game. In the event that the demand for a sequel is great enough the next ‘chapter’ will be very exciting indeed!

No jump button confirmed:
Question #3
· Is there a jump button by any chance?

[mat answer] no, HS is a cinematic action-adventure game and not a platform game

Pwnage CONFIRMED!
Question #4
· Have you thought of having super star moves for each of the fighting stances plus the cool cinematic throws?? Just incase the enemies start to get too intelligent or in the case where you stand against 100s of enemies, a pay off superstar move will be good. Maybe do this holding down the square or the triangle button. (like in ninja gaiden)

[mat answer] we have and yes, there are specific Superstyle moves for each of the stances and at multiple power levels…the highest levels of Superstyle will enable you to take out several hundred enemies if you are skillful enough

EDIT: ZOMG! at possible E3 demo!

Anyway, I'll agree that they are very distracting sometimes and it feels like they should remove them when they're too ugly to look at.

^Which they probably will...Remember still at least 2 months of development to go on this game fellas...

Even still, it already looks better than say Ninja Gaiden and it looks even more epic than God of War 2. No flickering is gonna stop this game's artistic and emotional innovation from shining through.

This will be a reason to buy a PS3!! The cannon sequences and cross-bow gameplay is awesome!!!

One complaint about Heavenly Sword that REALLY needs to be addressed…

A few of my guys over at PSINEXT have watched the special on TV and have noticed the flickering of the self-shadows. We understand this is a hard thing to get rid of, but it’s too apparent in Heavenly Sword and seriously needs to be toned down or completely done away with before shipped.

Now we’re probably just being a bit paranoid, but the game truly does look epic. But the constant flickering is very distracting and can ruin the quality of the title.

PS3 is still in it’s infancy so the majority of sells will still come from us early adopters. Plz don’t disappoint fellas;-( Polish this baby up so we can crown it game of the year!!!

Hope everything works out, and plz–FIX THE FLICKERING

The developers themselves are the first ones aware of the flickering and certainly the first ones who wish there was a way to get rid of it with no important drawbacks. It's not like they don't see it

Haven't got a clue about E3, I've been too busy finishing the damn thing ;-)

Given how near we are to final, Sony don't really need us to do much special code/design wise... So we've been left to actually get it into a shippable state.

Okay I'm known for my honesty, so no that isn't real-time...

Oddly nothing to do with the army, we do that in real-time, you fight real-time in that particular scene. However those particular shots are rendered off-line because of the last bit of the sequence where it zooms into her eye. We simply don't have the texture resolution to waste to do the eyeball justice.

Go grab some other army screen shots, so I can confirm there real-time :)

There some good stuff in the tv show (just ignore the dodgy shadows :D), lots of real-time army bits, which makes me especially happy of course :D

I don't think it gives much away about the story... At least nothing you don't find out in the first 5 mins (they show a few scenes that basically consist of the intro and level select).

DeanoC

@DeanoC: Are there any other scenes which are rendered offline?
What about the King Bohan/Raven Scene? Real-Time or not? ^^
We have 3 types of cut-scenes in the game

1) Offline rendered FMV. Something in these scenes would cost too much (i.e. take too much development time) to develop on PS3 for a one shot effort. Think some fancy effects, eyeball reflections etc.

2) Rendered in-game real-time but captured and played back as an FMV.
We do this sometimes, for the simply reason it helps hide load times. So while we show you a cutscene, we can be loading the level your about to play in the background, instead of actually increasing the load time while we brought in the cutscene data (which itself can be huge, due to resolution of the animation and texture data for the close ups) also means of course there more memory for the actual game bits.

3) Rendered in-game.
As the only reason we do two is for memory/loading reasons, at other times we have the resources available so we just render them real-time.

BTW the choice between type 2 and 3 is a nice advantage of Bluray. Its a non obvious optimisation a big ol' disk lets you make. Were really tight on disk space at the moment mind, so in a few places we had to go with type 3 cos we didnt' have any more disk space for more HD movies.

Can you talk about the Kai segments, like, perhaps give us a ratio of Nariko playable time to Kai's?

I have to be careful, PR/Marketting tend to get upset if we say anything before they approved it.

But basically Kai is a playable character, as Sai said she has no melee attack. She's about avoiding, getting some distance and planting an bolt in your enemies.

Its Nariko's game but I think about 20-25% is Kai but don't quote me on that I've never really timed it or anything.

Quite a revelation! I can already see the sensationalized headlines and misquotations on Kotaku.

Can you say anything about how this advantage plays against BR drive speed (often described as slower)?

I suppose if a game is cut-scene heavy, this is a big plus. MGS here we come.

Warhawk

I admit that when I first saw the game, I didn't see anything special. then I saw early vids. I thought this was a fighting game with some cool finishing moved. looks good, but nothing spectacular. but in the past few months, this game soared to one of of the top AAA and most anticipated games on any platform, imo. there is so much going on in it and for it that every nook and cranny looks amazing. it is amazing how Sony could embark on so many huge and diverse projects simultaneously. HS, WarHawk, Uncharted, Lair, LBP, The Agency and others are all amazing and doing their own things. and these are only the near launch games. look at what they have for next year like White Knight, Afrika, 8 Days, etc. PSN games are also looking extremely well with games like PAIN. I have yet to see a group with such dedication, potential, risk taking and talent as SCEWWS. and all of it is pouring into one distinational showcase center: PS3.

^^ I forgot about Warhawk... I have been sad since they cut off the beta :cry2: It was so awesome...

Since I gotta pay for school I am trying to reduce the amount of games I will buy this fall/winter.

HS for sure, same with Uncharted, Warhawk and Ratchet & Clank.

Halo 3 and GTA IV also.

FFT: PSP is another gotta have.

Mario Galaxy

*sob* I don't have enough money...OMG don't remind that I have to get a Wii over this year again!!!

lol...
My wii list shouldn't be that long though.
Mario Galaxy
Smash Brothers
Brain Age or Wario Ware game for Wii probaby

One of the pitfalls of owning all the systems; you have to pick and choose the games you wanna buy for each and will miss a lot of good games. AAA only for me :)

And that video on You Tube was pretty sweet. The host guy was a bit annoying (I don't care about your ex dude, wonder why she dumped you? watch yourself) but the footage was really choice. The game looks so gorgeous.

eBay is your friend. don't buy new games. I won't buy most of my games new as well. just find a store that sells used games or go with eBay. sure we won't have the games for few weeks after it is released, but buying a hit game at less than have of what the fresh copy asks is worth it for me. I will only buy those crazy games at full price (i.e. MGS4). ;)

I won't mind not getting them for a while since I have 10 games to buy (I narrowed it down to 10) and it's not like I can play 10 games at once...

There are quite a few games on my must buy fall list but the more and more I see of this title continuously puts it on the top. What Im seeing in the cinematic action, environmental offerings, action stylized gameplay, etc simply doesnt seem to be matched in its genre. This looks to be the new standard for action titles as this gen. matures.

Kudos to NT and Sony.

That's my problem, got 4 consoles but only a few games. Here's what I plan to buy, I'll proba only manage half though...

PS3 (when I get one)

-Metal Gear Solid 4
-Heavenly Sword
-Killzone 2 (only if the graphics are as good as the trailer, don't care if gameplay is crap, it looks SO immersive!)
-Final Fantasy XIII
-Resident Evil 5
-Devil May Cry 4
-Tekken 6
-Soul Calibur 4
-Little Big Planet

Xbox 360

-Halo 3 (I will cum when I play this game)
-Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
-Virtua Fighter 5 Live (rhymes)
-PGR4
-Mass Effect
-Bioshock
-Unreal 3
-Alan Wake
-Crysis (we know it's inevitable)

Wii

-any decent sword fighting or golf or tennis.

I can tell you they are rendered from in game assets. They most likely are the scenario he mentioned where they didn't want to sink the development time to pull off the effect they wanted (such as eye reflections) for such a short scene, so they rendered it offline instead (but still using the same in game assets).

^^ I really like the artistic direction of using game assets rendered offline with CG effects, because it keeps a consistent feel for the game. I think next-gen visuals are a perfect blend of CG and game assets so you really can't see a huge difference in quality. I always remember playing games in the past with beautiful CG and always wish the game looked that good. It looks like HS may actually deliver on that wish and that's what I call next-gen visuals... I can't wait to see direct feed footage of this title running on my display.

Deano if you are reading this and you don't have a demo planned for next week; I really hope you guys have a direct feed trailer with minimum compression to really appreciate the visuals.

Cliffbo's right, many of those shadows were shite. The snow fort one made me cringe (and I wrote/designed the original shadow system...). Basically our shadow system has a number of artist tweakables numbers, I can only presume those videos were a)from a while ago (before Marco improved some things) and b) before the shadow optimisation pass had been done on those scenes.

TBH I haven't noticed anything that bad recently but going take a full pass over the game tomorrow make sure there nothing even remotely yukky like was seen in the tv program is left.

Andy Serkis is undoubtedly the most experienced and accomplished motion capture actor on the planet. As fate would have it, my brother is his mortgage advisor. So I gave him a call and asked him if he could take care of these areas for Heavenly Sword. He was enthusiastic and I almost wept with joy. What I experienced with him during the shoot just blew my mind. Awesome

yoshaw
07-09-2007, 08:42 PM
I was tired, dirty and filled with thoughts about the shoot but I was keen to impress so I crouched down and showed them some WIP tests on my laptop which did indeed impress. I didn’t really fully appreciate, until the next day, that I had: Philippa Boyens, writer for Lord of the Rings; Andy Serkis, the greatest motion capture actor of this age; Peter Jackson, the legend and my childhood hero; and James Cameron, the groundbreaking and blockbusting film-maker, all crouched down around me looking at Heavenly Sword and talking shop about the possibilities of motion capture and how it can be applied in games and movies in the future. I came away thinking, “I thought we were breaking new ground... but we haven’t even scratched the surface of what is possible in the future!”
