Resident Evil fans take note;
Make sure paramedics are on standby before reading the following article.
Capcom says "Wii should be more Evil"
Remake of highest selling game in series to accompany RE4 & Umbrella Chronicles.
by Matt Casamassina
For us that have been there since its beginning, there is no denying that the relationship between Nintendo and the Resident Evil series has often been rocky.
It had started off quite well with the Nintendo 64 receiving a port of the best selling title in the series, Resident Evil 2. Then excitement ensued as Capcom announced that the entire series, then consisting of RE1-3 and Code: Veronica X, was to be completely remade for the GAMECUBE. However that fan dream never fully came to fruition, with only the original game being remade and the three follow-ups were nothing more than easy ports.
Nintendo fans were then treated to their own exclusive game, Resident Evil 0, a prequel which detailed the cause of the t-virus outbreak. Later on, things were looking very well for GAMECUBE owners when the next instalment in the series, Resident Evil 4, was announced to be exclusive to their beloved console. But by the time it hit store shelves, fans had already felt a cold sharp sting in their backs when a PS2 port with extras was revealed for a later release.
When Capcom left out Nintendo’s next-gen console (at the time) when announcing Resident Evil 5, the Nintendo-Resident Evil relationship was seemingly over. Until recently that is. In the past week we have learned that Capcom is giving Wii owners a chance to play RE4 with all the PS2 extras and a fresh control scheme, and an exclusive first person on-rails shooter titled Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.
But it looks as though that is just beginning of the RE franchise on Wii. Just today, Capcom have given IGN clearance to exclusively announce that the once promised remake of Resident Evil 2 is making its way onto the Wii platform. Rather than make you read through even more drivel, we here at IGN will give you the goods in point form.
- Complete graphical overhaul using a modified RE4 engine.
- Environments will be in full 3d with plenty of interactivity available.
- RE4’s over the shoulder camera view will be making a return.
- As well as RE4 style interactive action sequences.
- Also returning are crimson head zombies from the GC remake of the original game.
- Choices made in story A will be more abundant and will have a bigger impact on story B.
Sounds good right? Capcom seem intent on making it more of an action game by bringing back features from RE4 and making crimson heads live (in what ever way the undead manage to live) once more will give us more reason to hold down the run button. That’s not such a bad thing as RE2 felt like an action game hampered by the fixed cameras. "There has to be more!" you say. Well right you are. I’ve saved one major detail for last. Ready for it?
Separate Ways.
Yes that’s right, Ada’s secret missions will once again be unlockable. Obviously these missions will relate to Ada’s movements within the RE2 storyline. The official title to these missions is still under wraps but for now Capcom is using Separate Ways as a filler title.
Remember how I said I kept one huge detail? Are you ready for another one?
I can’t keep up this masquerade.
my gosh it will be so good.
what?
ok fine.
but my gosh it would be so good if it were real.
this is just something i've kept thinking about.
i've just recently gone through RE2 after getting excited about the upcoming RE Wii games.
and i felt that it was really lacking after having played RE0, REmake and RE4.
controls were missing elements. well mainly just quick 180s.
the setting and story IMO were more action than horror. if they remade it with the RE4 camera view it would be a good fit. especially since it's Leon we'd be controlling that same way again.
i'd also add in some new gameplay mechanics. the ability to press up against a wall and peer around corners.
picture it:
- coming up to a corner in a hallway.
- over shoulder view doesnt allow you to see around the corner
- so you press up against the wall and slide along.
- the camera is also sliding along the wall behind your head so you still cant see around the corner.
- when you get to the corner you start to look around the corner. camera view staying over the shoulder.
- then BAM! something scary jumps out at your face.
not the scariest but can bring back some scare factor that seemed lost in RE4.
another idea that i was going to put in that fake article was:
Da da daaaaaaaaa
2 player simultaneous story mode.
let me explain if you dont get it.
my idea for 2 player story mode means each player goes through their character's (Claire or Leon) story at the same time. meaning sometimes you will run into each other but the main idea is that one persons actions will also affect the other person's game. you can team up but the story wont progress unless certain objectives arent met so splitting up would be forced.
another part of the 2 player idea is that the mode can either be played online or LAN. LAN would require 2 Wiis, 2 TVs and two discs. now rather than making people buy two copies of the game to play this mode. the game itself would be split onto two discs. Leon's Story disc and Claire's Story disc. also that way more could be crammed onto each disc.
and of course i'd like to see an RE2 version of Seperate Ways. i mean how the hell did Ada survive that fall in RE2? i havent finised RE3 & C:VX so i dont know if its mentioned in there. nor do i remember it being mentioned in RE4.
i feel like i've put too much thought into this because its not up to me to remake the game. but it has been somewhat enjoyable to think of the possibilities.
